In recent years companies have caught on, making a slew of travel backpacks that are purpose-built for city hopping in Europe. It’s not all sleek travel backpacks for Europe, too, as many are a potent blend of hiking and travel, making them perfect for backpacking.

The Osprey Farpoint/Fairview is well constructed with intelligent design features that are perfect for travel; it’s easily one of the best travel backpacks for Europe. The Farpoint is the men’s model of the bag with a frame better suited for men, while the Fairview is for a woman’s frame. It’s a highly functional bag that’s been a traveler’s favorite for years.

It all starts with a lightweight frame and excellent suspension for comfortable carry. Osprey has a lot of experience in hiking backpack design, so they know how to create a fantastic bag for all-day comfort. A large panel makes it easy to access the roomy interior and organize your luggage. More organization features include a sizeable top mesh zip pocket, a side mesh pocket, and two interior compression straps. A rear laptop sleeve offers secure placement and can hold a hydration reservoir.

The bags come in four sizes (40, 55, 70, 80L), but we believe the 55L to be the best value. The 40L and 55L are the same backpacks, but the 55L includes the removable Farpoint/Fairview Travel Daypack. When removed, the 55L is carry-on compliant and can attach to the front straps for secure carry if it holds valuables. It’s important to note that the 55L is a 40L bag with a 15L daypack, which can create confusion.

Other stand-out features include the zip-away suspension, lockable zippers, and an adjustable torso fit. Even the padded carry handles make life easy for placing in overhead bins or quick grabs. The Peak Design Travel Backpack is my most used travel bag. Attention to detail is evident throughout the bag. It’s a sharp-looking bag, and its quality is evident through stitches and materials. You won’t look like a “budget backpacker” wearing the pack, and you can comfortably carry it in most environments.

An excellent pocket layout offers organization without consuming the bag’s roomy interior. That roomy interior works with Peak Design’s packing & camera cubes that lock to interior loops. It’s an intelligent system, but it does require further investment in an already expensive travel backpack.

An interior back pocket for a laptop/tablet is well-padded and sits closest to your back, which creates a more rigid, secure, and balanced backpack. It’s got some other slick features, such as a hidden luggage tag, theft deterrent zippers, a lined pocket, stow-away straps, two hidden external zip pockets, and compression straps. A luggage pass-through allows you to secure the bag to a roller handle.

The suspension on the bag feels robust, and the straps are comfortable for carrying heavy weight. This is needed as the bag is a little heavy because of the bag’s extensive features and durable materials. Its most significant negative is the weight with a non-vented back panel. This makes for a sweaty lower back in heat.

Despite that, the Peak Design Travel Backpack is great for a minimalist, businessman, or more modern backpacker with a sleek design. At 45L, it’s a little small for extended travel, but it’s very doable with the right packing strategies. If cost is not a concern, this is my favorite European travel backpack.

REI Co-op Ruckpack 40 Pack

Best Outdoor/Travel Backpack

We have transitioned from hiking packs to purpose-built travel backpacks within a few years. Many backpacks are great for travel or hiking, but very few are good at both. However, REI Co-op has created a backpack that attempts to blur the line between hiking and travel with the REI Co-op Ruckpack.

The design is similar to the Osprey Farpoint, except it has several features that Osprey lacks. A more robust suspension system allows for an impromptu hike in the mountains or up to the top of the local hill. I love the laptop compartment, hydration reservoir, rain cover, and straps for trekking poles. You can choose from three sizes 28L, 40L, or 60L. The 60L is capable of handling multiday backpacking trips in the backcountry.

The pack has a lie-flat feature with a large zip opening for easy access to all of your belongings to top it all off. This is the travel bag for those who want to blend city hopping, and adventure travel all in one bag. It’d be an excellent choice for travelers trekking the Camino De Santiago.

Tortuga outbreaker Backpack

Tortuga has some experience designing travel backpacks as they are one of the original companies in the market. The Outbreaker is one of their latest offerings and an impressive travel backpack. It has all the features travelers come to expect and some innovative ones.

It’s a boxy backpack, and the exterior material is a little stiff, but the bag still looks pretty sharp. The material is super durable and water resistant. You would think the boxy bag is uncomfortable to carry, but it has one of the best suspension systems tested in a travel backpack for Europe.

It’s easy to access the main compartment with a front-loading panel. The main compartment has a top mesh panel pocket and side pockets for easy organization of socks, underwear, and essentials. Travelers will appreciate that the organization offers plenty without consuming too much interior room — to maximize the bag, we recommend packing cubes.

It helps when a travel backpack is carry-on compliant, and the Outbreaker comes in two carry-on compliant sizes. You can purchase an “international” 35L and “USA” 45L bag to match airline requirements. Although, we never have an issue with the 45L traveling internationally. The Tortuga Outbreaker is an excellent bag that delivers plenty of stoke to any traveler.

Cotopaxi’s Allpa Travel Pack is an ultra-tough travel bag that carries the company’s signature look. It’s a versatile bag with a roomy main compartment that opens, similar to a clamshell suitcase. Allpa is a bag built around the premise of one-bag travel, and it has all the features you need for seamless travel.

The organization is the best we’ve seen in the main compartment for a travel backpack. Cotopaxi designed a practical interior with multiple compartments and mesh that use the clamshell opening well. A large front pocket provides easy access to quick-grab essentials such as toiletries, a wallet, or tech accessories. On the back of the bag is a spacious padded laptop sleeve.

Support for the bag is interesting as there are a variety of ways to carry the bag. You have four exterior handles for quick grabs and an over-shoulder strap for messenger bag carry. Traditional backpack suspension feels robust and comfortable with a hip belt and sternum strap. It’s not the best suspension we’ve seen in a travel bag, but it doesn’t leave much to be desired unless you’re on long hikes.

The only negative to the bag is it’s bulky when packed. Some bags lengthen and distribute the luggage vertically, while the Allpa extends horizontally off the back. This makes the bag less attractive and difficult to close when full. However, it’s still an excellent backpack for a European trip.

It has fantastic antitheft features, such as the eXomesh Slashgaurd technology that houses a hidden stainless steel mesh, making it slash-proof. Other sweet security features include an RFID pocket and security zippers that self-lock.

The exterior bag fabric is ECONYL fiber from recycled fishnets for a reduced carbon footprint. A stowaway strap system allows for safe transport when the bag is checked on flights. This bag is spacious, with plenty of organization to boot. It’s an easy contention for one of the best travel backpacks for Europe, if not for its comfort and style. However, as I talked about previously, no one solution fits all. However, it’s tough to dismiss the travel backpack for women as it’s the most affordable on this list.

The bag is of great value for a carry-on-compliant backpack. I wouldn’t plan to spend a few hours with the backpack on my back because of the flimsy straps. Not everyone needs to carry their luggage for extended periods, though, and the interior is very roomy. As it opens like a clamshell suitcase, travelers can quickly access their belongings.

We’ve used eBags extensively for their fabulous hard-side suitcases. They offer well-thought-out luggage that is of excellent quality. This carry-on backpack is no exception with its multiple compartments, organization, laptop sleeve, and clamshell opening. Our only real complaint is that it’s painfully ugly, and the straps suck.

However, all those features can make the bag a little clunky and difficult to pack effectively. The bag’s exterior tarpaulin material on the top panel provides water and abrasion resistance.

A patented strap system allows the bag to go from a backpack to a duffel bag. The pass-through system on the front attached the travel bag to the handle of the wheeled suitcase. Other great exterior features include a removable hip belt, water-resistant zippers, a top handle, and a sternum strap.

The organization is the bag’s most compelling feature, with a multitude of pockets to organize your luggage. It includes a top pocket, laundry bag, phone pocket, water bottle pocket, side panel for electronics, shoe pocket, and laptop/tablet sleeve. Topo Designs Travel Bag

Topo Designs launched their latest pack, the Travel Bag, and it’s a slam dunk for a carry-on backpack, and I used it on my last trip. The interior features a double zipper U-entry, one large compartment, a medium-sized compartment, two small pockets, and two mesh pockets. The exterior features a rear laptop sleeve, a front compartment with organization and U-entry, a vertical pocket with organization, and external loops.

The exterior is heavy-duty nylon, and the bag uses robust zippers that are the best we’ve seen on a travel backpack, albeit a bit clunky. Regarding suspension, it has side handles on both sides of the bag, a detachable shoulder strap, and straps with a hip belt and sternum strap. The support and straps are detachable and stored inside a zippered compartment for travel.

It’s a decent size at 40L and should be enough for minimalistic travelers in one season for multiple weeks. If you’re an adventure seeker and like to hike, the support system is lacking compared to top-loading packs. Depending on your style, the colors and style are better suited for younger travelers.

They offer a black if you prefer a more neutral bag. We have the olive color pictured above. It’s loaded with features and space and has a lifetime guarantee. I love this pack and have taken it on several trips to Europe and Asia.

Tropicfeel Shell Travel Backpack

The Tropicfeel Shell is excellent, and it feels like a high-quality backpack. It starts with the outer material used in the bag, a durable recycled nylon/polyester blend that is weatherproof and abrasion-resistant. The craftsmanship and the stitching on the bag feel durable, but the roll-top design and Fidlock accessory system feel a little sloppy.

It’s not quite as sleek as the Nomatic or Peak Design travel backpacks. However, the feature-rich backpack delivers some well-executed travel bag ideas. It also has the tech features we expect, like a dedicated laptop sleeve and organization for tech accessories. Other helpful features include side handles, a hip belt, sternum straps, and an ergonomic back panel.

The stand-out feature of the backpack is the Tropicfeel Shell Wardrobe System. It’s a compartmented mesh packing cube that can organize, hang, and compress your luggage. It is the best feature of the Tropicfeel Shell and works wonderfully if you can fit all your clothes into the system. The negative is that all accessories, including the Wardrobe system, are sold separately.

The additional accessories are a camera cube and two Fidlock system bags. Fidlock refers to the four tabs on the front of the backpack, which allow you to swap between external organizational bags. The accessory bags come at an additional charge.

It’s because of Osprey’s AntiGravity System, which feels great on your back.

This is another top-loading Osprey backpacking backpack specifically made for each gender’s frame making it one of the best hiking backpacks. Designed for the traditional backpacker or those on a hiking adventure, you can’t go wrong with the Aura. It’s not a lightweight hiking pack, but one built for maximum space and comfort.

The Baltoro/Deva is to carry a heavy load without breaking your back on the trail. It has a superior suspension system with plush padding and excellent organization. This is your ideal hiking backpack if you’ll be on extended thru-hike trips and don’t mind sacrificing a pound or two.

A comfortable mesh backpack makes for excellent ventilation. It has attractive features like a built-in rain fly, a water bottle holder that offers easy access on a hike, and hydration compatibility. It’s still a heavy pack but a reliable backpack with the build quality and substantial load capability.

Teton Sports Scout 3400

This durable top hiking back is one of the cheapest on the market and is suitable for men, women, and even children. The internal frame makes the Teton an excellent choice for camping and hiking. Even though this pack is well under $100, it still has sturdy zippers, open-cell foam lumbar pad support, and extra padded waist and shoulder straps.

There are loops for your ski poles. Although this pack is not waterproof, it comes with an integrated rainfly for when you get caught in a downpour. No bladder is included, but side holsters to place your water bottles while trekking. We believe this pack is one of the best packs you can get for your money. It might not be the right fit for serious hikers, but those just getting their toes wet will love its affordability.

There are three main types when it comes to backpacks, and each comes with its pros and cons. The three general styles of the bag are top-loading, panel-loading, and non-traditional packs.

Deciding on the pack style depends on what kind of traveler you are. It depends on what you’re looking to do and where you’re going. Some need a heavy-duty bag, while others need comfort, and then you have the slower-moving travelers.

What Size Backpack?

The sweet spot for me and a travel backpack for Europe is 40-45L, which should be a carry-on size for most bags. I believe it’s better to be fast and light rather than bogged down by a heavy backpack. It also saves time.

There is no way to go wrong with what is your world travel backpack. It’s all about personal preference and where you are in life. As a twenty-five-year-old guy, outdoor activities are very appealing to me, not to mention I feel I have a strong back, so carrying around a top-loading pack was my choice.

The problem, or strength, is that these backpacks are for multi-day hikes. It leads to a durable pack that is lightweight, comfortable, and waterproof.

Pros of Top-loading Backpacks

• Durable: A decent top-loading pack is designed to withstand the elements.
• Drawstring opening: These packs are designed to last and to be waterproof. So things like zippers aren’t used.
• Comfort: These packs are built for comfort on long hikes and are made for the adventurous. Meaning long walks when moving locations are more accessible.
• Flexibility: These packs are probably the most versatile since they are purpose-built for multi-day hike trips that allow you to bounce between urban and natural landscapes.
• Waterproof: Another reason to love the design of a top-loading pack is its waterproof capabilities.

Cons of Top loading Backpacks

• Packing: The top-loading feature can do the packing and unpacking a pain. You better start digging if something is at the bottom of your pack.
• Checked baggage: These bad boys can be large and often can’t fit in overheads, meaning you get hit with additional baggage fees.
• Straps: The straps hang all over the place. They might help you on a hike in the Rockies, but they are not so helpful when throwing under a coach bus.
• Awkward: They’re designed for riding on your back, not waiting on a metro platform. My top-loading pack is lovely on my back, but its shape cannot stand upright.
• Sore thumb: With a top-loading pack, there is almost no chance of looking like a local. You’re pretty much pegged for being a tourist right off the get-go, which can be a nuisance.

Non-Traditional Backpacks

It is a wide range of packs, some purpose-built for travel while others, like duffel bags, are purpose-built for a different task. I love duffel bags for shorter trips, and they have established themselves as favorites for adventure sports enthusiasts. These packs are incredibly varied since no actual design seems to reign supreme different companies have different styles.

It depends on individual comfort in determining which bag is right for you. I’ve seen a few exciting designs that may work well for a traveler on the go with short weekend trips. I don’t know a ton of practicality extending beyond that. For me, a traditional or duffel bag is far more stylish and just as practical, but to each its own.

How to Choose a Backpack for Europe?

Your budget is the first thing to think about when picking a great hiking backpack. Suitable backpacks are expensive, but you don’t want to blow your entire budget on a bag. However, investing in one of the best hiking backpacks on the market will stand the test of time. Many companies like REI, Osprey, and The North Face will offer to repair your products.

Comfort

Like anything, make sure that your hiking backpack is comfortable on your back. You should be able to hike comfortably for at least two hours. When buying online, it’s a good idea to check the return policy if the backpack does not fit you the way you would like.

Design

A hiking backpack’s design capability is crucial. A good pack doesn’t necessarily mean a bunch of bells and whistles. Make sure you narrow down if you want a top-loading backpack or front-loading, and check for any extra straps, harnesses, zippers, and clips you may or may not want and need.

Material

Make sure you pick a hiking backpack made out of good material. Most packs use either Ripstop Nylon or Dyneema. Dyneema is generally more expensive since it is lighter, but both are incredibly durable.

Volume/Frame/Weight

Determine everything you want to carry in your backpack, which will determine the volume of bags you buy. A good starting point is 40-50L. You’ll want to choose a relatively lightweight pack since you will be hiking with it for long treks.

A backpack can easily be your heaviest gear, so choosing something light could make all the difference for your comfort. And finally, select a frame that serves its purpose for what you need. A lightweight frame is a great option if you carry a lighter load. The same goes for the opposite.

It can be tough to choose a backpack with so many options available on the market. I brought the Osprey Atmos AG on my first backpacking trip to Europe but found hiking backpacks ill-suited for European travel.

There are two main types of travel backpacks, each with pros and cons. The two general styles of bags are travel backpacks and hiking backpacks. I’m referring to hiking backpacks for multiday trips in the backcountry. I’m breaking down this blog post into those two categories.

We’ll start with the specific men’s travel backpacks I recommend most travelers use on their trips. You can forget those big clunky hiking backpacks and opt for something more stylish and streamlined. Then we’ll move on to the hiking-specific men’s travel backpacks. Either way, these are all awesome backpacks for guys.

Osprey Farpoint

The Osprey Farpoint is a well constructed travel backpack for men with intelligent design features perfect for travel. It’s a highly functional bag that’s been a traveler’s favorite for years. It all starts with a lightweight frame and excellent suspension for comfortable carry. Osprey has a lot of experience in hiking backpack design, so they know how to create a fantastic bag for all-day comfort.

A large panel makes it easy to access the roomy interior and organize your luggage. More organization features include a sizeable top mesh zip pocket, a side mesh pocket, and two interior compression straps. A rear laptop sleeve offers secure placement and can hold a hydration reservoir.

The bag comes in four sizes (40, 55, 70, 80L), but we believe the 55L to be the best value. The 40L and 55L are the same backpacks, but the 55L includes the removable Farpoint Travel Daypack. When removed, the 55L is carry-on compliant and can attach to the front straps for secure carry if it holds valuables. It’s important to note that the 55L is a 40L bag with a 15L daypack, which can create confusion.

Other stand-out features include the zip-away suspension, lockable zippers, and an adjustable torso fit. Even the padded carry handles make life easy for placing in overhead bins or quick grabs. The Farpoint is an easy decision as one of the best travel backpacks for men. Business travelers will want to look elsewhere, but the Farpoint is the gold standard for backpackers.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack is my most used travel bag. Attention to detail is evident throughout the bag. It’s a sharp-looking bag; its quality is clear through stitches and materials. You won’t look like a “budget backpacker” wearing the pack, and you can comfortably carry it in most environments.

An excellent pocket layout offers organization without consuming the bag’s roomy interior. That roomy interior works with Peak Design’s packing & camera cubes that lock to interior loops. It’s an intelligent system, but it does require further investment in an already expensive travel backpack.

An interior back pocket for a laptop/tablet is well-padded and sits closest to your back, which creates a more rigid, secure, and balanced backpack. It’s got some other slick features, such as a hidden luggage tag, theft deterrent zippers, a lined pocket, stow-away straps, two hidden external zip pockets, and compression straps. A luggage pass-through allows you to secure the bag to a roller handle.

The suspension on the bag feels robust, and the straps are comfortable for carrying heavy weight. This is needed as the bag is a little heavy because of the bag’s extensive features and durable materials. Its most significant negative is the weight with a non-vented back panel. This makes for a sweaty lower back in heat.

Despite that, the Peak Design Travel Backpack is great for a minimalist, businessman, or more modern backpacker with a sleek design. At 45L, it’s a little small for extended travel, but it’s very doable with the right packing strategies. If cost is not a concern, this is my favorite men’s travel backpack.

REI Co-op Ruckpack 40 Pack

Best Outdoor/Travel Backpack

Price: $149 | Weight: 2 lbs. 13.5 oz. | Fabric: Nylon 210D | Capacities: 18, 28, 40, 60L

We have transitioned from hiking packs to purpose-built travel backpacks within a few years. Many backpacks are great for travel or hiking, but few are good at both. However, REI Co-op has created a backpack that attempts to blur the line between hiking and travel with the REI Co-op Ruckpack.

The design is similar to the Osprey Farpoint, except it has several features that Osprey lacks. A more robust suspension system allows for an impromptu hike in the mountains or up to the top of the local hill. I love the laptop compartment, hydration reservoir, rain cover, and straps for trekking poles. You can choose from three sizes: 28L, 40L, or 60L. The 60L is capable of handling multiday backpacking trips in the backcountry.

The pack has a lie-flat feature with a large zip opening for easy access to all of your belongings to top it all off. This is the travel bag for those who want to blend city hopping, and adventure travel all in one bag. It’d be an excellent choice for travelers trekking along the Camino De Santiago or Inca Trail.

Tortuga outbreaker Backpack

Tortuga has some experience designing travel backpacks as they are one of the original companies in the market. The Outbreaker is one of their latest offerings and an impressive travel backpack. It has all the features travelers come to expect and some innovative ones.

It’s a boxy backpack, and the exterior material is a little stiff, but the bag still looks pretty sharp. The material is super durable and water resistant. You would think the boxy bag is uncomfortable to carry, but it has one of the best suspension systems tested in a travel backpack for men.

It’s easy to access the main compartment with a front-loading panel. In the main compartment are a top mesh panel pocket and side pockets for easy organization of socks, underwear, and essentials. Travelers will appreciate that the organization offers plenty without consuming too much interior room — to maximize the bag, we recommend packing cubes.

It helps when a travel backpack is carry-on compliant, and the Outbreaker comes in two carry-on compliant sizes. You can purchase an “international” 35L and “USA” 45L bag to match airline requirements. Although, we never have an issue with the 45L traveling internationally. The Tortuga Outbreaker is an excellent bag that delivers plenty of stoke to any traveler.

Sometimes I love utilizing a carry-on suitcase for travel and a smaller travel backpack for accessories and my laptop. The LEVEL8 Atlas Backpack is an excellent, affordable laptop travel backpack option. It’s a comfortable backpack that is highly functional, with everything you could need for a wide range of trips, including business and leisure.

The organization has four compartments to separate a laptop sleeve, an organizational compartment, an accessory pouch, and a roomy main compartment to carry all your essentials. It’s easy to fit all the necessities, such as light toiletries, noise-canceling headphones, a water bottle, a light jacket, a hard drive, and a laptop. It’s a bit overkill for a minimalist, but if you love organization, it has a home for everything and feels well thought out.

Most of our travel requires a camera for our gear, so the Peak Design Everday Backpack is our go-to backpack, but comes with a high price tag. The Atlas is an excellent alternative at a fraction of the cost and will work for any traveler who’s not a photographer.

Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack

Cotopaxi’s Allpa Travel Pack is an ultra-tough travel bag that carries the company’s signature look. It’s a versatile bag with a roomy main compartment that opens, similar to a clamshell suitcase. Allpa is a bag built around the premise of one-bag travel, and it has all the features you need for seamless travel.

The organization is the best we’ve seen in the main compartment for a travel backpack. Cotopaxi designed a practical interior with multiple compartments and mesh that make good use of the clamshell opening. A large front pocket provides easy access to quick-grab essentials such as toiletries, a wallet, or tech accessories. On the back of the bag is a spacious padded laptop sleeve.

Support for the bag is interesting as there are a variety of ways to carry the bag. You have four exterior handles for quick grabs and an over-shoulder strap for messenger bag carry. Traditional backpack suspension feels robust and comfortable with a hip belt and sternum strap. It’s not the best suspension we’ve seen in a travel bag, but it doesn’t leave much to be desired unless you’re on long hikes.

The only negative to the bag is it’s bulky when packed. Some bags lengthen and distribute the luggage vertically, while the Allpa extends horizontally off the back. This makes the bag less attractive and difficult to close when full. However, it’s still an excellent travel backpack for men.

Tropicfeel Shell Travel Backpack

MSRP: $199 | Weight: 3.3 lbs | Fabric: Polyester | Capacities: 22L-40L

The Tropicfeel Shell is excellent, and it feels like a high-quality backpack. It starts with the outer material used in the bag, a durable recycled nylon/polyester blend that is weatherproof and abrasion-resistant. The craftsmanship and the stitching on the bag feel durable, but the roll-top design and Fidlock accessory system feel a little sloppy.

It’s not as sleek as the Nomatic or Peak Design travel backpacks. However, the feature-rich backpack delivers some well-executed travel bag ideas. It also has the tech features we expect, like a dedicated laptop sleeve and organization for tech accessories. Other helpful features include side handles, a hip belt, sternum straps, and an ergonomic back panel.

The stand-out feature of the backpack is the Tropicfeel Shell Wardrobe System. It’s a compartmented mesh packing cube that can organize, hang, and compress your luggage. It is the best feature of the Tropicfeel Shell and works wonderfully if you can fit all your clothes into the system. The negative is that all accessories, including the Wardrobe system, are sold separately.

The additional accessories are a camera cube and two Fidlock system bags. Fidlock refers to the four tabs on the front of the backpack, which allow you to swap between external organizational bags. The accessory bags come at an additional charge.

Pacsafe Venturesafe Travel Pack 45L

Men’s Anti-Theft Backpack

Pacsafe is the leading name in anti-theft backpacks for almost 20 years. The Pacsafe Venturesafe Travel Pack 45L is one example of the company’s phenomenal products. Thanks to its size, the pack makes a great carry-on travel backpack for men.

It has fantastic antitheft features, such as the eXomesh Slashgaurd technology that houses a hidden stainless steel mesh, making it slash-proof. Other sweet security features include an RFID pocket and security zippers that self-lock.

The exterior bag fabric is ECONYL fiber from recycled fishnets for a reduced carbon footprint. A stowaway strap system allows for safe transport when the bag is checked on flights. Once at the destination, travelers can easily access their belongings as the backpack has a clamshell opening. The type of opening allows for a better organization with packing cubes.

The style and functionality of this anti-theft backpack are superb and will give you peace of mind – whether on a weekend getaway or traveling the world! The Nomatic Travel Bag is a good travel bag for short trips. It’s a bag built around the premise of one-bag travel, with all the features you need for seamless travel. However, all those features can make the bag a little clunky and difficult to pack effectively. The bag’s exterior tarpaulin material on the top panel provides water and abrasion resistance.

A patented strap system allows the bag to go from a backpack to a duffel bag. The pass-through system on the front attached the travel bag to the handle of the wheeled suitcase. Other great exterior features include a removable hip belt, water-resistant zippers, a top handle, and a sternum strap.

The organization is the bag’s most compelling feature, with a multitude of pockets to organize your luggage. It includes a top pocket, laundry bag, phone pocket, water bottle pocket, side panel for electronics, shoe pocket, and laptop/tablet sleeve. Nomatic has a suite of accessory bags to design an organization system best for the individual traveler.

At 40L, the bag is best suited for 3-5 day one bag trips or can support a suitcase for extended journeys. Its sleek design and intelligent features make it an excellent fit for everyone, from business travelers to backpackers.

eBags TLS Mother Lode

MSRP: $119 | Weight: 3 lb. 15 oz. | Capacities: 45L

This bag is spacious, with plenty of organization to boot. It’s an easy contention for one of the best carry-on bags if not for its comfort and style. However, as I talked about previously, no one solution fits all. However, it’s tough to dismiss the travel backpack for women as it’s the most affordable on this list.

The bag is of great value for a carry-on-compliant backpack. I wouldn’t plan to spend a few hours with the backpack on my back because of the flimsy straps. Not everyone needs to carry their luggage for extended periods, though, and the interior is very roomy. As it opens like a clamshell suitcase, travelers can quickly access their belongings.

We’ve used eBags extensively for their fabulous hard-side suitcases. They offer well-thought-out luggage that is of excellent quality. This carry-on backpack is no exception with its multiple compartments, organization, laptop sleeve, and clamshell opening. Our only real complaint is that it’s painfully ugly, and the straps suck.

Topo Designs Travel Bag

MSRP: $229 | Weight: 3 lbs. 1o oz. | Capacities: 30L, 40L

Topo Designs launched their latest travel bag pack, a tremendous carry-on backpack. The interior features a double zipper U-entry, one large compartment, a medium-sized compartment, two small pockets, and two mesh pockets. The exterior features a rear laptop sleeve, a front compartment with organization and U-entry, a vertical pocket with organization, and external loops.

The exterior is heavy-duty nylon, and the bag uses robust zippers that are the best we’ve seen on a travel backpack, albeit a bit clunky. Regarding suspension, it has side handles on both sides of the bag, a detachable shoulder strap, and straps with a hip belt and sternum strap. The support and straps are detachable and stored inside a zippered compartment for travel.

It’s a decent size at 40L and should be enough for minimalistic travelers in one season for multiple weeks. If you’re an adventure seeker and like to hike, the support system is lacking compared to top-loading packs. The colors and style are better suited for younger travelers, depending on your style. They offer a black one if you prefer a more neutral bag. We have the olive color pictured above. It’s loaded with features and space and has a lifetime guarantee. I love this pack and have taken it on several trips to Europe and Asia.

Best Travel Backpacks for Hiking

Osprey Atmos AG

It’s tough to beat that feeling of carrying yourself to the next destination. We find ourselves spending more and more time away from cities and out in nature on our trips. For those who love to go backpacking or thru-hiking, the Osprey Atmos is an exceptional hiking backpack for men. The Anti-Gravity suspension system on the backpack feels fabulous on your back and carries weight like a champ.

It’s a top-loading hiking backpack that is made for men. The top load makes it difficult for everyday travel purposes, but it can get the job done. You can’t go wrong with the Atmos AG, designed for the traditional backpacker or those on a hiking adventure. As Osprey designs backpacks for the trail, the build quality is lovely and durable.

Almost the whole back panel is made out of lightweight mesh for ventilation. I love how the harness can be fine-tuned for any sized man. This pack has many compartments for organization, including space at the bottom for a sleeping bag.

Gregory Baltoro

MSRP: $319 | Weight: 4 lbs. 14.4 oz. | Capacities: 65, 75, 85, 100L

It is the most comfortable men’s hiking backpack for travel. I use this on long multiday treks or camping when I need to carry my gear. Gregory has been building bags for a long time to know how to make a quality pack. This hiking backpack is a workhorse designed to be used and abused.

The Baltoro is to carry a heavy load without breaking your back on the trail. It has a superior suspension system with plush padding and excellent organization. If you’ll be on extended thru-hike trips and don’t mind sacrificing a pound or two, this is your ideal hiking backpack.

A comfortable mesh backpack makes for excellent ventilation. It has attractive features like a built-in rain fly, a water bottle holder that offers easy access on a hike, and hydration compatibility. It’s still a heavy but reliable backpack with build quality and substantial load capability.

How to pick a travel backpack

Deciding on the pack style depends on what kind of traveler you are. It depends on what you’re looking to do and where you’re going. Some need a heavy-duty bag, while others need comfort, and then you have the slower-moving travelers.

There is no way to go wrong with what is your world travel backpack. It’s all about personal preference and where you are in life. As a twenty-five-year-old guy, outdoor activities are very appealing to me, not to mention I feel I have a strong back, so carrying around a top-loading pack was my choice.

So what suits you? I’ve broken down each pack and who they may appeal to for travel. There’s no right or wrong here, though (maybe hiking the alps with a convertible pack isn’t a good idea, but anyone doing that knows that already).

• Top-Loading: Adventure enthusiast. Hiking. Likes to walk and hitchhike. Long haul.
• Panel-loading: Quick moving. Mostly moving from city to city or town to town. Long haul.

What Size Backpack?

The sweet spot for me and a travel backpack for men is 40-45L, which should be a carry-on size for most bags. I believe it’s better to be fast and light rather than bogged down by a heavy backpack. It also saves time.

How to Choose a Good Travel Backpack?

Price

Your budget is the first thing to consider when picking a great backpack. High-quality backpacks are expensive, but you don’t want to blow your entire budget on a pack. You can read some of our tips on how to save money for travel.

However, if you invest in one of the best backpacks on the market, chances are it will stand the test of time. I’ve had my Osprey Farpoint for five years and counting and my REI backpack for even longer. Many great backpack brands will offer to repair your products if there are defects.

Comfort

Like anything, make sure that your backpack is comfortable on your back. You should be able to wear it comfortably for at least an hour. When buying online, it’s a good idea to check the return policy if the backpack does not fit you the way you would like.

Design

A travel backpack’s design capability is crucial. A good pack doesn’t necessarily mean a bunch of bells and whistles. Make sure you narrow down if you want a top-loading backpack or front-loading, and check for any extra straps, harnesses, zippers, and clips you may or may not want and need.

Material

Make sure you pick a travel backpack with excellent exterior material. Most packs use either Ripstop Nylon or Dyneema. Dyneema is generally more expensive since it is lighter, but both are highly durable.

Volume/Frame/Weight

Determine everything you want to carry in your backpack, which will determine the volume of bag you buy. A good starting point is 40-50L. You’ll want to choose a relatively lightweight pack since you will be hiking with it for long treks.

A backpack can easily be your heaviest gear, so choosing something lightweight could make all the difference for your comfort. And finally, select a frame that serves its purpose for what you need. A lightweight frame is a great option if you are carrying a lighter load. The same goes for the opposite.

Trip Length

The ideal backpack size for traveling long-term is somewhere around 60 liters. Anything smaller than that is for short extended excursions. Of course, every guy is different, but I like to travel with at least a pair of travel boots and sneakers that take up a lot of room.

Elements of a Travel Backpack For Men

Main Compartment

You’ll want to ensure that your backpack’s main compartment is large enough to carry all your belongings while still having easy access. Store the heavier things at the bottom of your bag so the weight is closer to your back. Additional compartments are suitable for storing small items or valuables like your passport.

Hip Belt

A good hip belt is essential for any travel backpack for men. Hip belts effectively place the weight of your pack on your hips. It helps take the pressure off your back. We love to see a form-fitting hip belt on hiking backpacks and, at the very least, a strap on travel-specific models.

Shoulder Straps

Along with the hip belt, your shoulder straps carry a lot of the weight of your pack. Thick and comfortable padding will keep your shoulders from hurting after a long day’s hike or walk through a city.

Water Bottle Holders and Hydration Ports

Hydration ports are great for those long hot days. If you aren’t using the hydration ports or a bladder, you will want at least one water bottle holder to hold your liquid.

Smartphones have brought many negatives these days, and we should all tune out social media. That being said, smartphones are a great lifeline; they can call emergency services or look up important information. With a smartphone, we can also access our finances.

For example, when we were driving around the Yucatan and had our credit card stolen, we canceled the card and received a new one in the mail hours after the theft. If you have a cell phone with a local SIM contract, you can access the data network, which means you can use smartphone navigation apps such as Google Maps.

If you’re wondering what to bring on a road trip, include a phone charger on your car necessities checklist. A phone serves as our communication device and navigation tool nearly every day of our lives. A phone charger is a must unless you’re going completely off the grid and using paper maps. For

Aeropress is the same concept as a traditional French press, but it is lighter, brews better coffee, is easier to clean, and ultimately easier to travel in every way. They make American-style coffee or espresso shots that you can use in a cappuccino or latte. As someone who loves coffee and making my own around the world, this invention is a lifesaver.

Coffee Thermos

Of course, if you travel with a coffee press, you must travel with a thermos! Gotta have somewhere to keep the hot drinks. A coffee thermos or a travel mug is perfect for cold mornings. We always have one sitting in our cup holder.

Snacks

Snacks are, of course, one of those things to bring on a long car ride. Especially if you’re going into rural areas for a while. We are pretty picky eaters and don’t like fast food or gas station food, so instead, we always have our car stocked with protein bars, almonds, apples, and other healthy options.

Our favorite energy bars are Clif Nut Butter Bars, and we always have a box floating around. Of course, everyone’s favorite snack is different. It’s also a good idea to bring some healthy snacks like carrots, nuts, or fruit. Eating potato chips high in sodium can lead to bloating and make you feel crumby.

Water Bottle

A water bottle is one of those important things to bring on a road trip. There is no reason for unnecessary plastic waste and paying for bottled water. A good water bottle can keep you hydrated and reduce waste. Our favorite is the Stanley Ice Flow because it keeps drinks cold for hours! Please don’t forget this on your road trip packing list.

Lighter

Another one of those things to take on a road trip is a lighter! You never know when you could need a lighter, and they are an inexpensive investment. If you are camping, this is a necessity. Plus, how can you make s’ mores without a fire?

Down Blanket

If you’re wondering what to take on a road trip with kids, consider a blanket. Blankets are great if you’re going on a trip with kids and want to get them comfortable. Even if you’re not with kids, a few blankets are great for the unknown. God forbid you to have to spend the night in your car due to unforeseen circumstances.

A down quilt is made for hiking backpackers where the main concern is weight and space. So, it makes for an exceptional blanket during road trips. It’s warm, soft, and comfy, and takes less room up in your bag, so you’ll feel right at home. If we spend 12 hours on a flight, we have no problems pulling a blanket out.

Eco-friendly Wet Wipes

Another great road trip must-have is eco-friendly wet wipes. Wet wipes are great for just about any kind of clean-up, even for making a pee break on the side of the road in rural areas. The problem with regular wet wipes is that most contain plastic fibers that are not biodegradable. Consider switching to eco-friendly wet wipes and using those when needed. (See more of our favorite eco-friendly products).

Tissues

Tissues are always handy to have in the car as they can save a runny nose, double as a napkin, or wipe the sweat off your brow. Or worst case scenario a roadside bathroom stop with no toilet paper. They are at the top of my road trip necessities list!

Sunscreen

Now that we’re a little older we always carry some sunscreen with us on any trip, well almost any trip. That being said there are definitely destinations that don’t require sunscreen. We like to use a mineral sunscreen for a number of reasons, despite a higher price tag. It’s also one of our favorite eco-friendly products.

Umbrella

In case it rains you won’t regret having an umbrella. I like cute travel-sized umbrellas because they take up less space. Hence being able to pack these up is the idea.

Travel Camera

Still, wondering what to take on a road trip? When we road-tripped around Iceland we stopped about every ten minutes to grab photos. Chances are you are road-tripping somewhere absolutely beautiful so don’t skimp on a good travel camera.

Travel Pillow

So what else can you take on a long car ride? Don’t forget a pillow. If you are planning on sleeping in your car you will most definitely want a pillow. A travel pillow is great for those in the passenger seat that doesn’t get to lay down flat but still want to get some shut-eye while on the road.

Reusable Shopping Bags

These are important road trip essentials for adults. Some great road trip accessories are reusable shopping bags. In today’s day and age, I feel like this is kind of a duh product to have in the car. If you could help reduce waste on the planet by simply bringing your own bag to the grocery store would you? Of course! These bags are cute, reusable, and pack up nicely! Just leaving these in your car at all times will significantly reduce your plastic consumption.

Day Bag

We use our day bags for just about anything, they are one of the most important road trip essentials. From walking around a city to snowboarding to hiking, or just putting a few snacks in a travel day bag is never a bad thing to have. Cooler

This is definitely a road trip essential as you’re going to want some cold drinks. After we load up the car, we throw in our favorite drinks and some ice. Traditional coolers are heavy and eat up a lot of room in the car, so we opt for a portable travel cooler. We like soft-side coolers as they’re easy to stick in the trunk of a car or SUV. It’s tough to beat our Yeti Hopper Cooler that more or less lives in the back of our truck.

Reusable Utensils

Plastic utensils are not only terrible for the environment, but they are terrible for you too! Did you know that only 6% of all plastic can be recycled in the US? That’s a terrible number, and I feel that if more people knew that, they would cut back on their plastic consumption and strive to become more eco-friendly.

On top of that, most disposable silverware contains BPA, a chemical that is terrible for your health (scientists have found links to cancer). The first step towards more sustainable lifestyles and travel is reusable utensils. That’s why we were so excited when we saw the HumanGear GoBites Trio. If you’re going to eat in the car, these are among our favorite road trip essentials.

Scrubba

Washing your clothes while traveling is never fun. That’s why we were super pumped to get the Scrubba. A tiny and lightweight mobile laundry machine. Just put your dirty clothes in the bag, add water and soap, seal, and scrub away. Now you can literally wash your clothes anywhere there is water. If you’re on a long road trip and need to do your laundry at some point, consider putting the Scrubba on your road trip packing list.

Collapsible Tupperware

Another great thing to pack for a road trip is collapsible Tupperware. Instead of always getting to take food in styrofoam or plastic container opt for Tupperware. These things pack up nice and small and really come in handy for long travel days when you don’t have easy access to food. These collapsible food storage containers are BPA-free, lead, and phthalates-free as well. 

Power Bank

I love traveling with a power bank to make sure my phone never dies. The majority of the time I don’t need to use it on long flights as some of the nicer airlines provide entertainment systems with USB ports! We also make sure to find a charging point during layovers, but getting to a new city without your hotel reservations and map can be a significant pain in the ass. I recommend purchasing this power bank because it’s a great value with reliable reviews.

Car Care Road Trip Essentials

License and Registration

This is an obvious one to have on your road trip checklist as it’s required by law pretty much everywhere in the world. In foreign countries, travel with paper copies of your driver’s license and important documents for emergencies. It’s best to have documents available and not packed in the luggage.

Maps / GPS / Navigation

Always bring some form of navigation, whether that’s a paper map, GPS, or smartphone. Most days, we can rely on our smartphones to use apps like Google Maps and Maps.Me. It’s also essential to make sure you have a way to charge your phone if it dies. Otherwise, you could end up lost with no directions. In more remote destinations, it’s best to have a paper map as an alternative.

Insurance Policy

Another road trip essential that is required in many parts of the world is car insurance. This all requires a bit of research and your own assessment of risk tolerance. For example, some countries have third-party liability insurance built into fuel prices.

While others require you to have third-party insurance if you plan to drive or rent a car. This is important to note if you rent a car in countries like Mexico or Costa Rica. Rental car companies love to offer low daily rates online but exorbitant required insurance charges when you arrive in person.

Additional Paper Documents

If you have plans to drive over borders with your car, it’s a good idea to have the deed or certificate of ownership. Various documents could be necessary for your road trip packing list, but it all depends on where you’re driving. You may need certified permission to drive a vehicle over borders if in a rental or car not registered in your name.

Another important document for international travel is the Carnet De Passage or CDP. This document is required in parts of Africa, and South America to cross borders and operates as a passport for your vehicle to prevent illegal imports. Another popular option to bring vehicles across a border is a TIP or temporary import permit, similar to a CDP except that it is country-specific.

Car Manual

It never hurts to have your car manual on you should a problem arise on your road trip. Most of us keep these stowed away in our glove box anyway. It’s not necessary, and if you’re handy, you likely don’t need a manual.

Cash

In Europe, Australia, and North America, we rely on our credit cards for everything. However, it’s recommended not to go anywhere semi-rural without cash on hand. When possible, pick up the local currency from ATMs but always have USD or Euro on hand. Without a doubt, a road trip is essential!

Duct Tape

If you’re wondering what to pack for a road trip consider duct tape. Who could go anywhere without this stuff? Never a bad idea to have in a pinch. It can save you from a costly tow truck call after striking a deer later at night. Duct tape has held many bumpers up after a mishap.

Spare Tire

A spare tire is essential for any road trip and should be an item in every car on the road. The best option is to have a full-sized spare, granted that’s not always possible with some vehicles. It’s a good idea to check your spare tire before you begin a long road trip. Along with a spare tire, it’s important to make sure you have a tire iron and jack as well.

Road Side Emergency Kit

This varies from state to state, province to province, and by country, but in many places triangle reflectors or a vest is one of those important road trip essentials to have. Then, of course, it never hurts to be prepared with things like a fix a flat, extra oil, zip ties, coolant, tools, air compressor, or new wiper blades.

Of course, it all depends on where and what you’re driving. It’s probably safe to leave the tools at home in a brand-new vehicle driving around major cities. To get a good sense of how to be prepared for tackling the world, read our post on how to overland gear.

Fluids

Fluids are not necessary for every car, but if you have an older vehicle, it’s helpful to have extra fluids like oil, coolant, or wiper fluid. If you’re driving in the winter months, always carry excess wiper fluid in the car. On that note, it never hurts to top up fluids before a trip.

First Aid Kit

We traveled with a first aid kit on our road trips in South Africa road trip and Iceland Ring Road trip. Thankfully, we never had to use it, but it was comforting knowing we had a few essentials should we need to treat a burn, band-aids, gloves, or disinfectant.

Here’s a well-kitted one on Amazon. If you’re really going off the grid as we did in Africa it’s good to have sutures, blood clotting solution, fluid, and antibiotics. Surprisingly the sutures came in handy, luckily not on ourselves.

Snow Supplies

If your destination has a chance of winter driving conditions there are a number of items worth their weight in gold. It’s important to have a scraper/snowbrush, shovel, additional warm clothes, and wiper fluid. Chains can be helpful or required by law depending on the vehicle and tires.

Jumper Cables

Jumper cables are cheap to purchase and can get you out of a bind should your battery die. These are good to have in your car not just for a special road trip, but also for day-to-day driving.

Jerry Can

A jerry can probably isn’t necessary unless you are driving into the bush or remote areas. We had two jerry cans on top of our Land Cruiser while road-tripping around Africa, and they were lifesaving more than a few times. However, if you’re making just a short road trip around developed nations, you won’t need these.

Flashlight

Good to have in every car – road trip or not. It came in useful handy this past summer when we struck a deer on dark country roads. A few zip-ties later, we were able to drive the car back home. Still feel awful about the deer, but happy we had a flashlight.

Knife

You never know when you could need a good knife. Just make sure to keep it in your checked luggage if you’re going through an airport. We like to keep a Morakniv knife on us for hikes and it rides it’s always in the back of our truck. It’s great if you need to cut something or use it as a tool if needed.

Tool Bag

If you have an older vehicle or truck it never hurts to have a tool bag. With a little TLC, you’ll be able to get back on the road. A proper toolkit will give the ability to replace fuses, tubes, basic wiring, and fan belts.

Road Trip Essentials For Parents

Car Seat

A road trip is essential for safety. Make sure to have the car seat installed before you hit the road. And it’s a good idea to bring your own for the rental car or reserve in advance.

Baby Bag

We don’t need a whole list of all your baby items, but you likely already have this packed. Just make sure to throw it in the car before you leave, or you may be turning around.

Bottle Warmer

This is one of those road trip essentials for all the mommies out there. A travel baby bottle warmer that fits perfectly in the cupholder. Just plug the car adaptor in and within minutes milk or formula will be warm.

Road Trip Essentials: Clothing

Sunglasses

Depending on how long the road trip is you may even want to pack an extra pair of sunglasses in case a pair breaks or you inevitably lose a pair. Make sure to protect your eyes from the sun since you’ll likely spend a lot of time outside. There are a lot of options for sunglasses and everyone should own at least a pair. It’s best to make sure they have UV protection for the health of your eyes.

Hat

Cameron loves to wear a hat so he always has one in the car. It’s great for sun protection and to remain comfortable on a long drive. This is an easy road trip essential to throw in the car at any time!

Comfortable Pants

If you were to ask me what the most comfortable thing to travel in is it would be leggings, while Cameron loves spending days in the car with prAna’s Vaha Pants. Comfort over style any day while on a long road trip. The Women’s Summit pant is the women’s version of the Vaha and is incredibly comfy.

Packable Down Jacket

If you’re traveling during any time besides summer, I recommend a packable down jacket. Down jackets pack up light and small and are ideal for fall and spring temperatures. They can even be great for winter, depending on where you are. If you are traveling during the summer, I recommend a fleece or sweatshirt to stay warm at night.

Rain Jacket

We don’t travel without a rain jacket and it’s an essential road trip. They are so easy and light to pack up there is no reason to not have one in your day bag. You should always be prepared for a chance of rain when you are hiking. Getting wet and rained on while on a mountain sucks, and it can also be extremely dangerous in cold temperatures.

The Arc’teryx is waterproof, windproof, and breathable and made with Goretex Pro. It’s not just good for traveling and rainstorms but is a protective shell against all levels of weather. I can even wear it in the winter as a waterproof shell over my down jacket.

Travel Towel

I’ve raved about travel towels all over this website. Travel towels are quick-drying, pack up light, and Anti-microbial. They are great to have on a road trip or any time you find yourself at the beach, swimming pool, or camping. We both have Youphoria towels, and they have lasted years.

Road Trip Playlist

We have a premium Spotify membership and have a good selection of travel playlist downloaded. You can also invest in Apple Music or Amazon Music instead of Spotify. Pretty much everyone knows that music is essential to a successful road trip.

Book or Kindle

Personally, I can’t read in a moving car. However, if you don’t get motion sickness like me then definitely pick up a few books for the road trip. A Kindle is a great way to access books easily and save on space and weight.

Playing Cards and Games

On every road trip essentials list should be a deck of playing cards. Never a bad thing to have! Another great one is the game of UNO for the kids who need some road trip games to keep them occupied.

Coloring Books

Whether you’re a kid or an adult, there’s no denying that coloring books are great. Get some colored pencils and coloring books for the kids. If you’re an adult, check out a few of these adult coloring books. Coloring books have been proven to reduce stress and increase brain activity!

Design

The pack’s exterior has a professional look to it that, and it looks very sharp in person. I was initially impressed by the bag’s looks online and was pleasantly surprised when we first received the pack – it lived up to its product images. The Expandable Knack Pack comes in two sizes, medium and large, with a small Knack Pack to be released later this year.

Several innovative design features stand out in the Knack Pack. In particular, I appreciate the large laptop sleeve that holds my 15″ Macbook Pro with ease yet separates it from the rest of the pack’s interior. The next pocket over is a hidden water bottle holder.

The Knack Pack has various compartments and pockets:

• Top pocket:  This pocket is designed for sunglasses or other items you need to access easily
• Front triangle pocket:  This is a great place to put pens, snacks or a book
• Bottom Pocket:  This pocket is designed to hold your laptop charger – no more trying to untangle it in the airport!
• Main compartment:  This is where you can keep the bulk of your items, like a camera, over the ear headphones, books, etc
• Expandable Luggage Compartment:  This section of the Knack Pack is great for digital nomads and travelers.  You can expand it to carry clothing (the large fits 3-4 outfits).

Overall the size of the backpacks feels just about perfect. On a trip, I can utilize packing cubes to compress luggage and arrive at a destination. Once at said destinations, it’s great to slip the packing cubes up, zip up the expandable section, and use them as an everyday carry bag.

Exterior

The medium comes in four colors, while the large has two color choices, Stealth Black and Saville Gray. I went with the Saville Gray, but I have to admit the Slate Black looks very sharp.

We receive a lot of travel backpack samples, and the Knack Bag has design quality that many backpack start-ups lack. It has a professional look to it, and the slim design gives a professional appearance. I’d even go so far as to say the bag would be appropriate on a business trip.

Three Months of Use

After three months of use, we can make a safe assessment of the exterior of the bag. Further down, we share where we took the Knack Pack and how it held up to international travel.

With 1200 D nylon fabric used in the bag’s exterior construction, we shouldn’t be surprised at how well the backpack has held up to heavy travel. The Knack Pack shows minor wear, and I have yet to find any snags, abrasions, or blemishes on the bag’s exterior.

Support

With any backpack designed for travel, I like to stress the importance of support. It refers to the shoulder straps, sternum straps, back panel, and hip belt. It’s nice to see that the Knack Pack uses all of these vital elements for a back that feels solid on back when fully packed.

It’s not as robust as a hiking pack, but this also saves it from looking too much like an outdoors pack. I used the pack several days as a day pack while exploring various cities, and it felt comfortable throughout the day. Even after all the wear with weight, the shoulder straps have no signs of wear which is an excellent signal for the longevity of the Knack Pack.

The back panel is effective as padding and offers ventilation. It saved me a sore back, and I did not sweat in typical weather environments. There is hardly any backpack that will prevent sweating in hot/humid climates like Hong Kong, Singapore, or New York in the summer.

A great feature should you need to stash the bag away or perhaps check the backpack for a flight is the stowaway straps. All of the straps detach and can be stored away inside the bag. It’s easy to do and only takes a minute or two to stash away everything in a straightforward way.

Interior

The main compartment of the expandable backpack does a great job at protecting your items and offers several pockets to organize. We had enough room to store lip balm, a wallet, two jackets, a small tripod, a mirrorless camera, lotion, GoPro, and a power bank with ease — more or less everything we need to explore a new city when we travel.

It was easy to keep things organized in the main compartment with two zippered compartments and a soft-lined sleeve that would work well to protect a tablet. The minor key leash is super helpful and a great way to save you from digging for keys, and it protects other items from scratches.

Moving onto more elements of the interior is the smooth nylon-lined interior. It’s stain-resistant and sports a brightly colored fabric that aids in finding items in the bag.

The second compartment expands and is best suited for your luggage as it is roomy and features a strap to secure luggage. This backpack area feels very similar to a clamshell suitcase with a large roomy side opposite a large zippered compartment. The zippered compartment is vented and is excellent to store underwear, socks, belt, or ties. What stands out is how unobtrusive the compartment is when not expanded. It zips up nicely and leaves a minimal footprint.

On the top is a small pocket that is perfect for small items that require quick access. It was the ideal spot to stash your phone and sunglasses, and with the soft-lined sleeve, it did a great job protecting your screen or glasses.

Knack Bag Features I Love

Water Bottle Pocket

It has some surprising features for its size, such as a zippable secret compartment and a water bottle holder capable of holding my large 18oz Hydroflask water bottle. We always encourage everyone to travel with a water bottle to fight dehydration and reduce plastic waste. Too often, a pocket to hold a water bottle is left out in travel bags, or it’s on the outside and makes it easy for a water bottle to get lost!.

Small Top Pocket

I enjoyed the top pocket as it felt just the right size. The soft-lined interior is excellent for protecting valuable items like a phone, sunglasses, glasses, or a small camera like a Sony RX 100 or GoPro.

Interior Liner

A lined interior is a feature found in a lot of luggage, but it’s taken a while to make its way into backpacks. I love having a sleek liner that is bright in color as it saves a lot of digging.

Support

I enjoyed the support system in Knack Pack and felt it does a great job at supporting a medium amount of weight. Should I need to check the back, I could stash away the straps, which is excellent!

Water Resistance

In light rain showers or getting caught briefly in a thunderstorm, the bag effectively protects against rain. They have implemented a reverse coil zipper from YYK that’s good at keeping the elements out, and when combined with super robust 1200D nylon, the bag holds up well in the elements.

Knack Bag Features I Don’t Love

Triangle Pocket

While I love the look of the front pocket, personal preference, it’s not the most practical. When opened, items tend to slip out as it folds down, and it doesn’t utilize all of the space available in the front effectively.

It’s far from a deal-breaker for me, but I’d love to see a top open pocket in future versions of the backpack. In use, I was still able to slip in my noise-canceling over-ear headphones, pens, notepad, and a reusable straw (check out our eco-friendly travel products). So, it’s still a practical compartment. It just could be a little better.

No Side Handle

The stowaway support straps are great and make the bag very streamlined. However, once they are stored away, the bag’s only to hold is via the top handle, which feels a bit long and awkward. It would be an outstanding feature if a side handle were added to the bag or perhaps even a shoulder strap. Hopefully, in a future backpack version!

Testing

We took the Knack Bag on our last trip to Asia, in which we visited the cities of Hong Kong, Osaka, Singapore, Kyoto, and even did some island hopping in the Philippines.

As far as design, the Knack Expandable Backpack is one of my favorites in the travel world. It’s a new backpack and company that launched in 2019 and from several executives who worked for the luggage company Tumi. The exterior and design of the pack are overwhelmingly positive. Compared to any of the other travel-specific bags we’ve had the chance to look at, it delivers high quality with excellent features.

It’s not well suited for those on long trips a month or more, but if you’re making a quick city escape for a long weekend or week trip to a city like London or Paris, this pack would be a tremendous decision. 

Living a #OneBagLife

In this post, I will share my top picks for the best carry-on backpacks and what to consider when selecting.

The Best Carry On Backpacks

Osprey Farpoint/Fairview Travel Pack

The Osprey Farpoint/Fairview is well constructed with intelligent design features that are perfect for travel and is well known as one of the best carry on backpacks. The Farpoint is the men’s model of the bag with a frame better suited for men, while the Fairview is for a woman’s frame. It’s a highly functional bag that’s been a traveler’s favorite for years. The bag comes in several larger versions that are not carry-on compliant.

The 40L and 55L are the same backpack, but the 55L includes the removable Farpoint/Fairview Travel Daypack. When removed, the 55L is carry-on compliant and can attach to the front straps for secure carry if it holds valuables. It’s important to note that the 55L is a 40L bag with a 15L daypack which can create confusion.

A large panel makes it easy to access the roomy interior and organize your luggage. More organization features include a sizeable top mesh zip pocket, a side mesh pocket, and two interior compression straps. A rear laptop sleeve offers secure placement and can hold a hydration reservoir.

Other stand-out features include the zip-away suspension, lockable zippers, and an adjustable torso fit. Even the padded carry handles make life easy for placing in overhead bins or quick grabs. The Farpoint or Fairview is an easy decision as one of the best carry-on backpacks. Business travelers will want to look elsewhere, but the travel backpack is the gold standard for backpackers.

Peak Design Travel Backpack

The Peak Design Travel Backpack is a top-quality carry on backpack perfect for travelers who value attention to detail and a sleek design. The bag features high-quality materials and impeccable stitching; this backpack looks sharp and will undoubtedly last.

Its roomy interior and intelligent organization system, with packing and camera cubes that lock into place, make it an excellent choice for minimalist travelers and businesspeople. The internal laptop/tablet pocket is well-padded and situated close to your back, providing a more rigid and secure carry.

Other features include a hidden luggage tag, theft-deterrent zippers, a lined pocket, stow-away straps, two hidden external zip pockets, and compression straps. With the pass-through luggage feature, you can even attach the bag to a roller handle.

The suspension system on the Peak Design backpack is robust, and the straps are comfortable enough to handle heavy loads. However, the bag is a little heavy due to its extensive features and durable materials, and the non-vented back panel can lead to a sweaty lower back in hot weather. Overall, the Peak Design Travel Backpack is an excellent choice for the modern backpacker who wants a stylish and functional carry-on backpack. As frequent travelers, it’s the backpack we reach for the most.

Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack

Cotopaxi’s Allpa Travel Pack is a stylish and durable carry-on backpack for one-bag travel. Its clamshell-style main compartment, numerous interior compartments, and mesh pockets offer excellent organization and easy access to your belongings. The front pocket is perfect for quick-grab items like toiletries, a wallet, or tech accessories, while a padded laptop sleeve on the back keeps your laptop safe and secure.

In terms of carrying options, the Allpa has four exterior handles for easy grabbing, and an over-the-shoulder strap for messenger bag-style carry. The traditional backpack suspension system is comfortable and sturdy, with a hip belt and sternum strap to distribute the weight evenly. While it may not be the best suspension system for long hikes, it is more than sufficient for most travel situations.

The only downside to the Allpa is its bulk when fully packed. It extends horizontally off the back rather than vertically, which can make it less attractive and harder to close. Despite this, it is still an excellent choice for a short trip or any other travel adventure.

The exterior is heavy-duty nylon, and the bag uses robust zippers that are the best we’ve seen on a travel backpack, albeit a bit clunky. Regarding suspension, it has side handles on both sides of the bag, a detachable shoulder strap, and straps with a hip belt and sternum strap. The support and straps are detachable and stored inside a zippered compartment for travel.

It’s a decent size at 40L and should be enough for minimalistic travelers in one season for multiple weeks. If you’re an adventure seeker and like to hike, the support system is lacking compared to top-loading packs. The colors and style are better suited for younger travelers, depending on your style.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack is my most used travel bag. Attention to detail is evident throughout the bag. It’s a sharp-looking bag; its quality is clear through stitches and materials. You won’t look like a “budget backpacker” wearing the pack, and you can comfortably carry it in most environments.

An excellent pocket layout offers organization without consuming the bag’s roomy interior. That roomy interior works with Peak Design’s packing & camera cubes that lock to internal loops. It’s an intelligent system, but it does require further investment in an already expensive travel backpack.

An interior back pocket for a laptop/tablet is well-padded and sits closest to your back, which creates a more rigid, secure, and balanced backpack. It’s got some other slick features, such as a hidden luggage tag, theft deterrent zippers, a lined pocket, stowaway straps, two hidden external zip pockets, and compression straps. A luggage pass-through allows you to secure the bag to a roller handle.

The suspension on the bag feels robust, and the straps are comfortable for carrying heavy weight. This is needed as the bag is a little heavy because of the bag’s extensive features and durable materials. Its most significant negative is the weight with a non-vented back panel. This makes for a sweaty lower back in heat.

Despite that, the Peak Design Travel Backpack is great for a minimalist, businessman, or more modern backpacker with a sleek design. At 45L, it’s a little small for extended travel, but it’s very doable with the right packing strategies. If cost is not a concern, this is my favorite women’s travel backpack.

It’s tough to beat that feeling of carrying yourself to the next destination. We find ourselves spending more and more time away from cities and out in nature on our trips. For those who love to go backpacking or thru-hiking, the Osprey Aura is an exceptional hiking backpack for women. The Anti-Gravity suspension system on the backpack feels fabulous on your back and carries weight like a champ.

It’s a top-loading hiking backpack that is made for women. The top load makes it difficult for everyday travel purposes, but it can get the job done. You can’t go wrong with the Aura AG, designed for the traditional backpacker or those on a hiking adventure. As Osprey designs backpacks for the trail, the build quality is lovely and durable.

Almost the whole back panel is made out of lightweight mesh for ventilation. I love how the harness can be fine-tuned for any sized woman. This pack has many compartments for organization, including space at the bottom for a sleeping bag.

The organization is the best we’ve seen in the main compartment for a travel backpack. Cotopaxi designed a practical interior with multiple compartments and mesh that make good use of the clamshell opening. A large front pocket provides easy access to quick-grab essentials such as toiletries, a wallet, or tech accessories. On the back of the bag is a spacious padded laptop sleeve.

Support for the bag is interesting as there are a variety of ways to carry the bag. You have four exterior handles for quick grabs and an over should strap for messenger bag carry. Traditional backpack suspension feels robust and comfortable with a hip belt and sternum strap. It’s not the best suspension we’ve seen in a travel bag, but it doesn’t leave much to be desired unless you’re on long hikes.

The only negative to the bag is it’s bulky when packed. Some bags chose to lengthen and distribute the luggage vertically, while the Allpa extends horizontally off the back. This makes the bag less attractive and difficult to close when full. However, it’s still an excellent backpack for a European trip.

Deciding on the pack style depends on what kind of traveler you are. It depends on what you’re looking to do and where you’re going. Some need a heavy-duty bag, while others need comfort, and then you have the slower-moving travelers.

There is no way to go wrong with what is your world travel backpack. It’s all about personal preference and where you are in life. Outdoor activities are very appealing to me, not to mention I feel I have a strong back, so carrying around a top-loading pack was my choice.

However, if you invest in one of the best backpacks on the market, chances are it will stand the test of time. I’ve had my Osprey Farpoint for five years and counting and my REI backpack for even longer. Many great backpack brands will offer to repair your products if there are defects.

Comfort

Like anything, make sure that your backpack is comfortable on your back. You should be able to wear it comfortably for at least an hour. When buying online, it’s a good idea to check the return policy if the backpack does not fit you the way you would like.

Design

A travel backpack’s design capability is crucial. A good pack doesn’t necessarily mean a bunch of bells and whistles. Make sure you narrow down if you want a top-loading backpack or front-loading, and check for any extra straps, harnesses, zippers, and clips you may or may not want and need.

Material

Make sure you pick a travel backpack with excellent exterior material. Most packs use either Ripstop Nylon or Dyneema. Dyneema is generally more expensive since it is lighter, but both are highly durable.

Volume/Frame/Weight

Determine everything you want to carry in your backpack, which will determine the volume of bags you buy. A good starting point is 40-50L. You’ll want to choose a relatively lightweight pack since you will be hiking with it for long treks.

A backpack can easily be your heaviest gear, so choosing something lightweight could make all the difference for your comfort. And finally, select a frame that serves its purpose for what you need. A lightweight frame is a great option if you are carrying a lighter load. The same goes for the opposite.

Trip Length

It’s essential to consider your trip length when picking a travel backpack. Great day backpacks on this list are great for just that – a day. At the same time, others can serve you for traveling for a week, a month, or even years.

The ideal backpack size for traveling long-term is somewhere around 60 liters. Anything smaller than that is for short extended excursions. If you have plans to travel for several weeks, you’ll have a tough time with a pack smaller than 60 liters. Of course, every woman is different, but I like to travel with at least a pair of travel boots and sneakers that take up a lot of room.

Manduka EKO Superlite 1.5MM Travel Yoga Mat

In our testing, Manduka makes the overall best travel yoga mat. The Manduka eKO Superlite Yoga Travel Mat weighs 2.2 lbs and, with a thickness of 1.5 mm, provides adequate cushioning. What stands out the most with the yoga mat is its impressive grip, quality, and flexibility.

When moving to your next destination, the mat folds or rolls into a small shape without damage. The ability to fold the mat allows it to fit inside a suitcase or backpack. You can practically fold it into any shape you desire. All in all, it’s a tremendous foldable yoga mat with tremendous grip.

Like many travel yoga mats, it does not offer much padding for the knees or other joints. This is a problem when practicing on concrete or tiled floors, but it’s adequate on soft surfaces like wood, carpet, and natural surfaces.

Lastly, it’s important to note that this mat is not for long-term travel and everyday yoga practice. I practiced ashtanga yoga on this mat for six months before the grip started wearing down, which created too much friction for my fingers and toes.

Gaiam makes the best budget travel yoga mat on this list. The Gaiam Foldable Travel Yoga Mat was created with travel in mind and is the best foldable yoga mat on this list. Yes, it is a foldable mat, not a rollable mat. So this mat will be super happy in your suitcase or duffle bag! The mat folds into a 10-inch by 12-inch rectangle, perfect for tossing in the tote bag and heading to the beach or the nearest airport!

It’s also hard to beat the price tag. Around $25 with a lifetime guarantee makes it a phenomenal find. The most common complaint about this mat is the lack of cushioning. Most people find it a perfect beach mat because of its sticky grip and lightweight functionality. Just make sure your mat ends up in the shade!

Also, since it is PVC, you’ll likely notice a strong vinyl odor during the first use of the mat. Airing and letting it hang outside will help the smell fade faster. However, this mat cannot be stored or used for too long in the sun. The sunlight will damage the material and can render the mat brittle. 

The lifetime guarantee is awesome! But it doesn’t cover normal wear and tear nor misuse of the yoga mat. It only covers manufacturing defects in materials and craft. Given its delicate nature, it will likely break down sooner rather than later.

Jade Yoga Travel Mat

It is the best travel yoga mat for extra cushioning. Another excellent thing yoga mat is this one from Jade Yoga. Although Jade Yoga claims that you can fold their travel mat, it’s pretty tricky. It has a thickness of 3.2mm and terrific support for the knees, but the thickness makes anything other than rolling the mat a considerable struggle.

Also, traveling with a 3.5-pound mat is pretty heavy. If you’re throwing it in the back of your car for a road trip, you’ll be one happy camper! But if you’re a solo backpacker with nothing but an Osprey on your back, then you might find the weight physically taxing.

It is a durable mat sourced from top-quality natural materials. However, the Jade Yoga Travel Mat is a bit high maintenance for most travelers. You can’t clean these mats with just a regular mat spray. They recommend using a mixture of water, white vinegar, and dishwashing soap. It’s also crucial that this mat does not see the sun. Therefore, practicing yoga outdoors in the sun is a no-go, as is storing this mat in the back of your car where sunlight can filter through. 

I do love the sustainable environmental mission of Jade Yoga, where they plant a tree for every yoga mat purchased. They also make all their mats in the USA, an added perk for those wary of other countries’ manufacturing standards and ethical practices.

It is available in two sizes, 68-inch and 74-inch, which is excellent if you seek a specifically sized yoga mat! Given its thickness, the plush cushioning and additional support to the joints make this mat shine!

YOGO Ultralight Eco Travel Mat

Weight: 2.2lbs | Thickness: 1.6mm | Material: Natural Tree Rubber

The YOGO Ultralight Travel Yoga Mat is exceptional and makes for a great travel yoga mat. This one comes with an attached carrying strap that keeps the yoga mat in a newspaper shape. Along with being foldable, lightweight, and eco-friendly with its natural tree rubber material, the YOGO Ultralight Travel Yoga Mat is a great find.

The YOGO Ultralight Travel Mat is easy to clean, thanks to the design. We all know how tricky it can be to get down on your hands and knees and spot clean mats with sensitive materials. You can wash this mat in the shower! The material doesn’t absorb water, so you rinse it and hang it up to dry. The mat has built-in loops for an extra easy hanging experience. Innovative thinking, YOGO.

Known for being exceptionally sticky and grippy, the texture of this mat is similar to kitchen drawer liners! You won’t be slipping around during your asana practice on this mat, no matter which hot and humid country you practice yoga in! YOGO plants a tree for every mat purchased, taking a page from Jade Yoga. I love this portable travel yoga mat.

Jade Yoga Voyager Mat

The Jade Voyager has been compared time and time again with the Manduka eKO Superlite Yoga Travel Mat. They are made of the same material and have the same thickness. But Jade Yoga worked magic and cut the weight significantly, shooting down from 3.5 pounds to the Voyager’s 1.5 pounds. 

The Jade Yoga Travel Mat and the Jade Yoga Voyager Mat have a high grip and stickiness, making transitioning through a Vinyasa flow a pleasant experience. We all know what it feels like to slip and slide on a mat! 

The most common complaint is going to be the thinness of the mat. While it’s lovely to fold up your mat into about the size of a yoga block and chuck it in your backpack, it is painful to hold kneeling asanas for too long. Suppose I don’t have an extra mat to place under the Voyager. In that case, I usually will grab a hotel towel or even my thick scarf to put under my knees during poses like ustrasana, or camel pose.

It’s worth noting that the Jade Yoga Voyager Mat only comes in a 68-inch size, unlike the Jade Yoga Travel Mat, which comes in both a 68-inch and a 74-inch size. Of course, it also is made in the USA, and a tree gets planted for every Voyager mat purchased. 

Yoga Design Lab Combo Mat

Weight: 1.8lbs | Thickness: 1mm | Material: Natural Tree Rubber and Recycled Microfiber

Yoga Design Lab has crafted a fantastic yoga mat that is the best machine-washable yoga mat out there. With its nearly unparalleled thickness of just one millimeter, you may be shocked at how comfortable this mat is. It’s a yoga mat and towel in one! Ideal for hot yoga practices, the Yoga Design Lab Mat is lightweight, foldable, and includes a handy carrying strap. All in all, it’s a tremendous foldable yoga mat for travel.

You will probably fall in love with all the fun designs of the Yoga Design Lab Mats, just as I did. They were all designed in Bali! Practicing yoga while looking down at such beautiful mandalas and geometric designs is fun. Also, I’m impressed that their mats are from a blend of natural tree rubber and microfibers made from recycled bottles. And their ink is all water-based. 

Did you ever think the day would come when you could put your yoga mat in the machine? With the Yoga Design Lab Mat, your dreams became a reality! They even promise that the designs won’t fade with washing. And you can take your mat into the sun without fear of sun damage! One last positive note is that $1 will support boys’ and girls’ youth yoga programs for every mat purchased. 

The downside to the Yoga Design Lab Mat is that there is almost no cushioning. Expect it to feel like practicing on a thin towel that doesn’t slip on hard surfaces. This mat is as thin as a credit card! It must also be washed frequently because moisture, sweat, and dirt adhere to the mat quickly. As it has a soft texture, you may find that this mat doesn’t have a grip or stick like familiar yoga mats.

Liforme Travel Yoga Mat

Weight: 4.63lbs | Thickness: 1.8mm | Material: Natural Tree Rubber & Polyurethane

The Liforme Travel Yoga Mat has alignment in mind. It has a unique alignment marker system embedded in the mat, which helps with perfect hand and foot placement. Sometimes, it can be annoying when you’re not positive if your heels align correctly in Warrior, right? This mat takes all doubt away!

The mat’s surface is smooth, similar to the prAna mat texture. It also provides excellent grip while having a soft surface. It is much heavier than most travel mats, coming in at a whopping 4.63 pounds! Given its weight and material, it’s impossible to fold this mat.

Liforme includes a yoga mat bag with all purchases, adding to its portability. Liforme is proud that their mats are more extended and broader than others, coming in at 70.8″ long x 25.6.”

Despite being hard to heft around, I love that this mat is truly planet-friendly! It is free of PVC and made with only non-toxic materials. What’s extra fabulous is that this mat is biodegradable! It will decompose within three to five years in a landfill.

Hugger Mugger Tapas Travel Yoga Mat

Weight: 1.4lbs | Thickness: 1.6mm | Material: PER / Polymer Environmental Resin

Hugger Mugger Tapas Travel Yoga Mat is a highly sticky and grippy mat. They achieved this surface without using any polyurethane, utilizing only environmental resin, which is fantastic! For those who have latex allergies and need to avoid natural rubber mats, this Tapas Travel mat solves those allergy worries as it is 100% latex and rubber-free.

I like to think of my Hugger Mugger Tapas Travel Yoga Mat as my adventure companion. I love how tightly it folds down and how durable the material is. I can practice yoga on a craggy mountainside without feeling like I might rip a hole in this mat! The material is truly unique. It’s also easy to wash, necessitating only warm water and dish soap solution. 

However, like other travel mats, it doesn’t have a lot of cushions, so it’s best to bring an extra mat or towel to place under the knees during asanas that require more support and cushioning. 

June and Juniper Travel Yoga Mat

June and Juniper Travel Yoga Mats are renowned for being hand-painted and designed by artists. They have beautiful, unique designs that add something extra to your yoga practice. Let’s up the zen factor, shall we? My favorite feature about the June and Juniper Travel Yoga Mats is that they are two-sided; one natural rubber side has excellent grip, and one microfiber side is softer and feels more like a yoga towel. The microfiber is porous, highly absorbent, and has excellent moisture-wicking properties.

So it functions more like a quick-drying towel than a regular towel that stays wet with sweat for hours. You can also machine wash your June and Juniper Travel Yoga Mat – another reason to love these mats.

For extra fun and functionality, mats come with a strap to carry the mat, which doubles as a yoga strap! You don’t need to cart around an extra prop, and this strap works like a charm.

I’ve said it on repeat, but this is another thin and lightweight mat, so expect to need extra cushioning for kneeling asanas. However, June and Juniper go above and beyond and provide all buyers with a knee cushion.

prAna Nomad Travel Mat

Weight: 3lbs | Thickness: 3mm | Material: Thermoplastic Elastomer

The prAna Nomad travel yoga mat has quite literally stolen my heart. While I might not be using the word ‘literally’ in a grammatically correct sense here, I’m absolutely and completely head over heels for my Nomad. 

While it’s not the lightest mat on the market, it has an excellent grip. The prAna nomad has a two-sided textured surface giving yogis excellent grip on hard surfaces. Whether you want to do a vinyasa or a yin yoga session, there is dual density to utilize for your dream yoga practice.

The prAna Nomad has an antimicrobial additive, which prevents your mat from being susceptible to mildew. It’s also super easy to clean, with just warm soapy water all that’s needed. My mat makes me feel like I have two mats in one! It is a go-to mat for world travel since it’s easy to clean, foldable, eco-friendly, and super grippy.

What to Consider When Buying a Travel Yoga Mat

Material and Texture

Choosing the material and texture of your mat is key to a successful yoga asana practice. The different materials create varying levels of grip. Given the climate you’re going to, you may need a mat to keep you in place while sweating in the humidity. However, you may find that the extra grippy mats are annoying, as they can “lock” you in place, making transitions harder. 

The mats above come from natural tree rubber, but some unique mats use microfiber, polymer environmental resin, or polyurethane. These materials have different upsides and downsides, so choose the material and texture that best suits your needs and yoga practice. 

Thickness

I felt a little bit like a woman on repeat, but you have to be aware of the weight and thickness when buying travel yoga mats. Some of the mats I mentioned above have the thickness of a credit card! Can you imagine doing a Cat/Cow pose on a hardwood floor for two minutes? Ouch! 

While other travel yoga mats are thicker, it usually restricts foldability, drastically decreasing portability. If you can, try a 1.5mm mat and see how it feels to practice it on different surfaces. Anything below 2mm is too thin for my delicate knees, so I’ve always had to snag an extra mat underneath it when I pop into studios while traveling. 

Durability

Not all mats are created equal. Lucky for you, the list above is filled with the best travel yoga mats out there. However, you want to ensure that the mat is durable enough for the type of travel you have in mind. Be mindful that some travel yoga mats degrade in UV light (sunlight). Are you heading to the beaches of Thailand?

That means beach yoga is a big no-no. Or are you planning a luxurious trip with a giant suitcase and staying in glitzy hotels? Then go for the more lightweight travel yoga mats so you can practice in the comfort of the carpet! 

If you’re taking nothing but a backpack and doing some extreme adventuring, I find it’s best to pick a mat that has a guarantee policy. It protects you if your mat breaks down in the humidity or rips on a rock on the cliffside. Who knows what will happen to a yogi-on-the-go!

The tuckaway straps and integrated luggage carry system makes it easy to slip on top of a roller suitcase for travel. Adding a dedicated laptop sleeve for a tablet and documents completes it as a great daypack. One big negative of this pack is the price, as the sizeable 30L version is shy of $300.

Nomatic is fairly new to the anti-theft backpack game, only getting started after raising over 5 million dollars on Kickstarter and Indiegogo. They claim to have created the “most functional travel bag ever!” Based on their design scheme, they might have.

They seem to have thought of everything with a roomy 40L bag, individual removable organization panels, headphone and charger cord pass-throughs, magnetic snap-back side pockets, and backpack-to-briefcase versatility.

It is a business/travel backpack with anti-theft features, such as RFID protection and lockable zippers, rather than being primarily called an anti-theft bag. It isn’t just great as an anti-theft backpack, but a general travel backpack.

Another one of those iconic best daypacks for travel. First things first, this pack is made by Patagonia, one of my favorite brands! Patagonia makes excellent quality gear and garments. Two years on the road, and I still have my Patagonia is showing minor wear signs. I continue to buy more of their products. Patagonia’s Black Hole is everything I have come to love about the company. It features a ripstop polyester with a water-resistant TPU laminate, making it waterproof and super rugged.

The pack has a great look. An inner padded pocket is inside to hold a laptop, making for a great bag in the city or out hiking in the woods. Another great feature is the daisy chain loops that allow for the attachment of a skateboard, yoga mat, or climbing gear. This travel daypack is a slam dunk, but some might not like the laminate materials look. Also, it lacks compartments in the interior for the organization of your gear.

Thule Subterra Backpack

Another strong contender in the field of durability is the Thule Subterra backpack. Like Osprey, Thule focuses on products for intense adventure and backcountry use. This daypack is made to travel and keep your laptop secure and safe for the entire trip.

The padded laptop sleeve includes Thule’s SafeEdge Corner Protection, which beefs up the padding around the edges and corners of your device, where damage is most likely to occur. The treated heavy-duty nylon material contributes to its protection by keeping water at bay, and the additional valuables and tablet pockets also feature added padding.

We are also big fans of the quality of this bag, as it stands out against most backpacks. It’s a daypack designed for travel and everyday use that provides easy access to your gear, a handy side zipper, direct access to your laptop when needed, and a nice luggage sleeve to secure on a roller bag. This bag has many Peak Designs Everyday Backpack features at a fraction of the price. Also, if you want a more stylish version, it comes in a rolltop style.

Topo Designs makes some great backpacks, including one of our favorite travel backpacks for European travel. The interior features a double zipper U-entry, one large compartment, a medium-sized compartment, two small pockets, and two mesh pockets. The interior features a padded laptop sleeve. A nice-sized compartment with pockets and a roll-top entry for the main compartment is on the front.

The exterior is heavy-duty nylon, and the bag uses robust zippers that are the best we’ve seen on a travel daypack, albeit a bit clunky. I really enjoy the style of this bag, and the heavy-duty nylon feels excellent in person and will likely handle travel very well.

Herschel Classics Little America Travel Daypack

You’ve seen this daypack before. Herschel makes the Little America Eco Pack, drawing inspiration from mountaineering bags back in the day. The classic look and simple design make it a perfect daypack.

No, this isn’t a heavy-duty travel daypack meant for the mountains, but with a great look and affordable price, we love the bag. However, the polyester exterior also performs well regarding water repellency and durability. It’s a bag that holds up well to regular daily use.

We also appreciate features like the drawstring top, laptop sleeve, and dual water bottle pockets. Its roomy interior lacks organization, but it does have a dedicated 15″ laptop sleeve. It’s an excellent choice for a more affordable daypack for travel.

Timbuk2 Robin Pack

Yet another contender for stylish yet functional travel laptop backpacks is the Timbuk2 Robin Pack. While Timbuk2 has made a name by allowing almost complete customization of its bags, the off-the-shelf Robin Pack has a sleek appearance loaded with features that secure its place on our top backpacks list.

The laptop-specific sleeve is heavily padded and easily unzips to lay flat and roll through TSA screenings. The rest of the pack’s pockets have organization and compartmentalization in mind; you’re provided with spots for chargers, phones, glasses, passports, and any other gear you’d like to carry. This is encased in durable and weather-resistant nylon to keep the rain out. Please note that this particular bag is on the smaller side and only fits 15″ laptops and smaller.

Knack Medium Expandable Backpack

Regarding design, the Knack Expandable Backpack is one of my favorite travel backpacks and the best daypack for travel. The exterior and design of the pack are overwhelmingly positive. Compared to any other travel-specific bags I’ve looked at, it delivers high quality with excellent features.

This pack’s design is innovative. I’m impressed with the small layout’s organization, number of pockets, and ridiculous features. Serious kudos to the designers of this pack. It has some surprising features for its size, such as a secret compartment and water bottle holder capable of holding our large 18oz Hydroflask water bottles.

It’s not well suited for those on long trips, but if you’re making a quick city escape for a long weekend or week in a town like London or Paris, this pack would be a tremendous decision. Furthermore, it’s professional enough looking for business travel.

Also, I never want to be searching for an adaptor when I have just come off a long travel day and need to plug in my computer. I want to have it with me and ready to go. We’ve tried a bund of adapters, but this one from Ceptics has to be our favorite in our travels. It has multiple plugs and USB ports. It also works as a surge protector.

Kindle Paperwhite

A Kindle is an essential travel accessory for travelers who love to read. As much as we love an actual book, they are too heavy and take up too much room in my suitcase. We recently upgraded to the Kindle Paperwhite and love it. It’s small, has touchscreen functions, and has a backlight to read at night without a harsh glare.

Apple AirTag

Apple AirTags are great travel accessories because they allow you to keep track of your items, such as your luggage, purse, or camera, while on the go. Additionally, the Apple AirTag has a built-in speaker that can play a sound to help you locate your item if it is nearby.

Pair a linen shirt with sandals, shorts, chinos, jeans, or shoes. It will always work. Linen shirts are versatile clothing that looks good for both sexes and works at the beach, museum, archaeological site, or safari. It’s tough to find decent linen shirts online, but I love the quality of J. Crew’s and Everlane’s linen shirts. You can often score a deal, so it won’t be the world’s end if you stain or snag the shirt.

Chinos

A pair of chinos work for both sexes. It’s a classic look that can combine with a sweater, dress shirt, t-shirt, or blouse. Regarding color choice, try to match the destination—darker colors in cooler climates and lighter colors in warm climates.

Rainbow Sandals are our absolute favorite sandals. No one wants to be someone who shows up to the beach in sneakers. Sandals are a staple of island life worldwide; we couldn’t imagine a trip without them.

As a great travel tip, take a small pouch with everything you’ll need for a long flight. Once you board the flight, you can place it in the seatback pocket. It saves you from having to retrieve your essentials from the overhead bin and saves you the risk of leaving something behind.

Toiletry Bag

Keeping your toiletries organized and separated from your clothes is always a good idea. So we love always travel with a toiletry bag. It’s not uncommon to find small or cramped bathrooms in Asia and Europe. Buying a hanging toiletry bag is an excellent option if you are limited on counter space. Portable Jewelry Box

A portable jewelry box is a staple in my packing list. It’s a great travel essential but is easily overlooked until it’s too late. It’s easy to break necklace chains or loose earrings in your suitcase or backpack. No one wants to lose or damage precious jewelry.

Before I had a travel jewelry box, I stored all my necklaces and earrings in a plastic bag, constantly untangling them. This organizer will safely keep jewelry organized and stored thanks to a straightforward design and a few compartments.

Delsey’s Helium Aero suitcase is made of 100% polycarbonate, and it’s our favorite bag among Delsey’s checked and carry-on luggage collection. The Black Hole Tote Pack is a rugged, lightweight travel tote. The bag is all about function, and its unisex style adds a lot of versatility. The tote offers an excellent range of features, such as the ability to double as a backpack.

Strap lengths and layout feel perfect, and the interior is roomy enough to carry daily items, groceries, or gym clothes. It also features a laptop pocket, a foam back panel that doubles as a seat, and two mesh water bottle pockets.

The biggest complaint about travel towels is that they often feel nothing like the plush cotton towels we are accustomed to at home and in hotels. A travel adapter to use in foreign countries, headphones, an e-book reader, a streaming device, and a smartphone case can all be very useful. While an Apple AirTag keeps tabs on your luggage and valuables while you’re on the road.

Travel Adaptor

An essential travel accessory for any international trip is a universal power adaptor. We recommend picking up one before arriving at your destination. Once at your destination, finding one that is not overpriced or poor quality can be challenging.

Also, I never want to be searching for an adaptor when I have just come off a long travel day and need to plug in my computer. I want to have it with me and ready to go. We’ve tried a bund of adapters, but this one from Ceptics has to be our favorite in our travels. It has multiple plugs and USB ports it also works as a surge protector.

Kindle Paperwhite

A Kindle is an essential travel accessory for travelers who love to read. As much as we love an actual book, they are too heavy and take up too much room in my suitcase. We recently upgraded to the Kindle Paperwhite and love it. It’s small, has touchscreen functions, and has a backlight to read at night without a harsh glare.

Apple AirTag

Apple AirTags are great travel accessories because they allow you to keep track of your items, such as your luggage, purse, or camera, while on the go. Additionally, the AirTag has a built-in speaker that can play a sound to help you locate your item if it is nearby.

It’s small and discreet, making it easy to attach to a variety of items or throw in your luggage, that way, you can locate your valuable items. The little tag also allows you to see the last known location of your device and get notifications when the item arrives or leaves a specific location, making it easy to keep track of your luggage while flying. On tight flight connections, it’s nice to know we can keep an eye on our luggage remotely.

A great travel accessory is a mobile phone case that makes life easier. Many cases can protect your phone, but the Peak Design Mobile Case is the first to enhance your phone. A streaming device is a travel must-have. Don’t count on hotels or vacation rentals to have a smart TV. A streaming device like the Roku Express is excellent as it comes with a remote and does not require a phone to control like the Google Chromecast. Plug the streaming device into any TV, connect to Wifi, and voila – Netflix!

Anker Power Bank

I love traveling with a power bank to ensure my electronics never die. I usually don’t need to use it on long flights as some new international flights provide entertainment systems with USB ports! (Always make sure your charging cable is handy when boarding the plane.)

We also make sure to find a charging point during layovers, but getting to a new city without your hotel reservations and map can be a significant pain. I recommend purchasing this power bank because it’s a great value with solid reviews.

Almost all international flights have entertainment systems, but the headphones are often lackluster. That’s why I think headphones are an air travel accessory you need.  Traveling with a decent pair of noise-canceling over-the-ear headphones is best for comfort.

Hitting the sidewalk and letting a city unfold around you is one of the best ways to get familiar with a city. When packing your bag, a comfortable pair of shoes for both men and women is essential. However, I wouldn’t recommend packing the clunky hiking or athletic shoes many travelers love to wear.

You’ll stand out like a sore thumb. A pair of casual sneakers is a great travel accessory. Most international cities are walkable, so be prepared to spend a lot of time in them. We love to wear our Allbirds, but any comfortable casual shoe will work.
