With countless product samples, purchases, and research, I’ve narrowed down my favorite clothes for travel. Unsurprisingly, not all clothes, shoes, and accessories handle travel well.

Some popular brands and products have left me feeling robbed or uncomfortable. While others offer excellent value, make for cute photos, or put a smile on my face when I wear them. I want to share my most comfortable, stylish, and durable travel clothes for women. I hope to help make your decisions easy while saving you money.

The Best Travel Clothes for Women

Women’s Travel Shirts

Solid Color Crop Tops

Petting A Kitty In Greece With A Crop Top

Price – $29 | Material – Nylon/Spandex

I consider crop tops essential travel clothes for women. Solid color crops go with almost everything and are easy to pack. Best of all, it’s a trendy look that can work on various women. I mix and match them with shorts, pants, or a skirt. They also look nice under a linen shirt or blouse.

The ones in the photo above are from a generic brand on Amazon, and I love how flattering they are – plus, you don’t have to wear a bra with them. Not only are they suitable for travel, but also for light hikes and activity! If you aren’t into the crop top look, Unbound Merino sells extremely comfortable muscle tanks in various colors that also look great!

Crop Tops

Unbound Merino Wool V-Neck

Sitting In Naxos Chora With A Pink V-Neck

Price – $85 | Material – Merino Wool

A classic tee will never go out of style. I suggest sticking with solid colors like black, white, or grey. Keep it simple with tees; solid colors are easiest to match, and try to avoid white as it’s easy to stain. I love the quality and ease of ordering from Bombas if you’re after a classic cotton tee, tank, or v-neck.

However, a merino wool shirt is a worthy investment and one of the best pieces of travel clothes. Wool shirts stay fresh longer and do an excellent job at temperature management. I’ve tested a lot of wool shirts out, and my favorite for travel so far is from Unbound Merino, as they make some of the best travel clothes for women. Their v-neck is a great fit and comes in a good selection of colors.

Travel Shirts

Linen Shirt

linen shirt in france

Price – $88 | Material – Linen

I love the look of linen when traveling around warm-weather destinations. Linen is as practical as it is stylish. It’s great as it tends to dry faster, feel lighter, and cope with sweat better than its cotton counterparts.

Pair a linen shirt with sandals, shorts, jeans, or shoes, or even go barefoot. It’s a versatile shirt that looks great on both sexes and works at the beach or a restaurant. They’re the perfect shirt for summer in Southern Italy. It’s tough to find decent linen shirts online, but we love the quality of Everlane’s linen shirts.

Linen Shirts

Bodysuit

I just started traveling with Honeylove bodysuits and love them for travel. Classic colors like black and white go with any type of bottom – pant, skirt, or shorts and look sleek when abroad!

A Great Flannel Shirt

Natasha By A Lake In Iceland Wearing A Flannel Shirt

Price – $99 | Material – Cotton

Flannel shirts are fabulous mid-layers for both men and women. They provide warmth and go well with vests. Flannels are great for relaxed outdoor destinations like National Parks or Nordic Countries.

With a flannel or sweater, you’ll feel right at home. You can pair a flannel with a travel vest for a classic look that is great for warmth. I love two companies for flannels, California Cowboy and REI. The Fjord Flannel from Patagonia is classic, while REI Co-op makes a more affordable shirt in several colors.

My Favorite Flannels For Travel

Women’s Travel Pants

prAna pants

Natasha Sitting With A Camel In Jordan Wearing Prana Pants and a linen shirt

Price: $95 | Fabric: Nylon / Polyester

I love loose pants for warm weather and beach destinations. I’ve tried a bunch of different pants, but my favorite pair is from prAna. Their June Pants are made from hemp and recycled polyester and offer 50+ UPF protection.

They are perfect for beach destinations, especially if you find yourself in more conservative areas. These pants are lightweight and weigh nothing in a carry-on bag. They sell out a lot, so an excellent alternative with more colorways is the Fernie Pant (which I also have many pairs of).

prAna Summit Pants

DU/ER Performance Jeans

Natasha At 7132 Hotel In Switzerland Wearing Travel Jeans

Price – $129 | Material – Cotton/Polyester/Spandex

Jeans are a fashion staple but aren’t the best packing pants. However, travelers have options, such as DU/ER jeans. The organic cotton jeans look sharp, but the blend of polyester and spandex allows the jeans to stretch. They look like quality stone-washed denim without the weight and stiff feeling.

Fit is exceptional, with a slim fit throughout the leg. You can comfortably wear the jeans on long travel days without any discomfort. Thanks to the synthetic blend, they’re great for lengthy trips as there is no need to wash the jeans. An easy favorite for anyone seeking new travel clothes.

DU/ER Performance Slim Fit Jeans

Performance Joggers

Cam And Tasha Walking Along the Board at The Cape Of Good Hope

Price – $94 | Material – Polyester/Elastane

Athleisure has come to dominate fashion now, and it’s a trend I can get behind. Joggers are a terrific way to remain comfortable and still look stylish. Lululemon makes some fantastic joggers that look sharp, offer excellent performance, and feel great for travel days. They make exceptional travel clothes for women, one of my favorite items.

They’re great for a run, a long flight, or relaxing at home. It’s a more casual look, but that’s not always bad, and it can work in many travel destinations. Plus, they double as lounge and gym wear, saving space in my bag.

Lululemon Joggers

Handful Leggings

Hiking in Switzerland

Price: $68 | Fabric: Poly / Spandex

I love wearing yoga pants because I like to practice yoga and stay active, plus it’s super comfortable. I adore Lululemon’s leggings as they’re super comfortable and durable. They live up to the hype. However, my favorite leggings are from Handful. Their signature leggings are durable enough for hiking and light enough for a yoga sesh or everyday life. Best of all, they aren’t see-through.

The leggings have temperature-regulating technology that keeps you cool when hot and warm when cold. They are quick-drying and provide an extra lift to your booty. The top has a “squeeze play” high waist that offers excellent coverage and is comfortable around your curves as you move. (Use code TWP15 for 15% off!)

Handful Leggings

Kuhl Freeflex Roll-up Pants

Natasha On Safari At Jacis Lodge

Price: $99 | Fabric: Polyester

Lightweight pants made from synthetic material are tremendous to have in your pack. These new “hiking pants” work more casually and are as comfortable on the city streets as in the mountains. Kuhl’s ENDURO™ blend fabric in their women’s Freeflex Roll-Up pants is a testament to their commitment to quality and durability.

Not only does the fabric feel soft against the skin, but it has also proven to be resistant to wear and tear after repeated use. The Freeflex Roll-Up pants feature functional pockets and drawstrings, making them perfect for women who need practicality and comfort.

KUHL Free Radikl/Freeflex Pants

Women’s Travel Shorts

Natasha Walking Down The Beach On The Garden Route
Enjoying the gorgeous South African beaches.

You’ll want some shorts for your trip if it’s summertime. Shorts are also easy to pack as they take up less space in your luggage and can be easily washed. Shorts are one of those items I find acceptable as cheap cotton items. We’ve tested a lot of travel shorts out and only been impressed by a handful.

Some of my favorite shorts for women include the prAna Fernie Short, prAna Elle Short, Lululemon Cinchable Waist Shorts, prAna Kanab, and Patagonia Baggies. We suggest whatever suits your style and recommend they do not involve cargo pockets. That’s precisely what I did in the photo above – a hike in the morning and an evening stroll at the beach around town in my prAna Railay shorts!

A Versatile Dress

Natasha Walking Down A Street in Sorrento In A Sundress
Walking the streets on the Amalfi Coast.

I love a dress with a more relaxed shape for daily wear. Not only is it more comfortable in the heat, but it’s also cute. A trip is a perfect time to bust out your favorite summer dress. My favorite sites for dress shopping are Salty Crush, and Free People.

Tasha in Venice
I wear this dress everywhere in Europe – Travel wear for women doesn’t get much better

My only recommendation is to avoid the ridiculous gowns that you see on social media. Another great option is a black dress for nights out. Dresses are a travel staple and occupy almost no room in your suitcase — granted, that depends on the style.

Great Dresses For Travel

Maxi/Flowy Skirt

Natasha In A Maxi Skirt In Naxos Chora
My most versatile maxi skirt!

A maxi skirt, or “flowy skirt,” is an excellent wardrobe staple worn daily in the summer. Maxi skirts are versatile enough for a variety of settings and destinations. My top travel tip is to avoid prints, as they’re more challenging to match.

The maxi skirt in the photo above is from Free People. They change styles and stock frequently, so it’s best to shop for one that fits your style. I love matching a crop, bandeau, or tank top with a maxi skirt. Amazon also makes some fantastic ones that come in every color, and I’ve purchased a few from there.

Maxi Skirt

Travel Dress

Natasha In A Travel Dress At An Alpine Lake In Austria

Price: $118 | Fabric: Polyester / Spandex

These aren’t to walk around a city and look glam, but they are super practical when traveling. With lightweight, fast-drying fabric, a travel dress will keep you cool in the sun. It’s also great as it will dry overnight after a quick wash in your washbasin. They’re often billed as active or hiking dresses, and I love them for the right trip. My favorite is the Lululemon Align™ Dress. Other great options are the REI Co-op Aoraki Dress and Patagonia Fleetwith Dress.

Romper

Natasha and Kelsey Sitting On A Porch In Greece

Price: $119 | Fabric: Polyester / Spandex

Rompers are some of my favorite travel clothing items. I love Patagonia and prAna and its brand ethos around sustainability. The Patagonia Fleetwith Romper is Bluesign certified and super comfortable. While the Fleetwith is available as a dress, I prefer the romper best. It’s just so functional, cozy, and cute!

The one-piece romper is made from a 91% recycled polyester/9% spandex blend, moves with your body, resists wrinkles, and quickly dries. The romper makes for a great piece of travel clothing for women and is so versatile you may end up living in it.

My other favorite brand for rompers is prAna, especially their Fernie line. Their stuff is amazingly comfortable and lasts forever.

Playsuit, Jumpsuit, Overalls

Natasha In A Town Along Lake Como in Overalls

Overalls or jumpsuits are my favorite travel outfits for women because they’re stylish, comfortable, and practical. You can’t go wrong here, and we suggest throwing at least one or two rompers in your suitcase for Europe. They’re great for a night and super cute for casual days. You can shop on Free People and Prana for some great options. As they have a loose cut, you can get away with cotton fabrics at a more affordable price.

Women’s Jackets For Travel

Barbour Beadnell Jacket

Barbour Beadnell Jacket

MSRP – $385 | Material – Waxed Canvas

The Classic Beadnell jacket by Barbour is the one you’ll reach for every season of the year. Its waxed cotton exterior looks gorgeous and highly functional as it supplies wind and water resistance.

A cozy tartan lining is soft against the skin and supplies warmth in cool climates. It provides a lot of versatility as the jacket works for a wide range of destinations and daily life. I could wear this jacket in Scotland or the Masai Mara. The jacket is also highly functional with two snap button bellow pockets, handwarmer pockets, and one interior breast pocket.

I appreciate the women’s fit that keeps an excellent shape with front and back panels. The one downside is it’s too warm for hot destinations, but it is ready to tackle any cool weather. It’s an expensive jacket, but we feel it’s a worthy investment that will last a lifetime.

Barbour Beadnell Jacket

Arc’teryx Cerium LT Hoody

Natasha Sitting On The Summit of Cascade Mountain In An Arc'teryx Cerium Hoody

Price: $379 | Fabric: Nylon / Goose Down

Everyone should own only a few items; the top of the list is a down jacket. A down jacket is a staple for travel and outdoor activities as it’s tremendously versatile. They pack down and can fit easily in a backpack. However, despite their lightweight nature, they offer a lot of warmth.

When dealing with travel and various climates, it’s a great way to keep warm without wasting too much space in your luggage. My favorite down jacket is the Arc’teryx Cerium, as it blends the perfect balance between ultralightweight, performance, style, and fit.

Arc’teryx Cerium LT Hoody

Patagonia Better Sweater

Natasha Running On The Dempster Highway In Northern Yukon

Price: $129 | Fabric: Polyester

The Patagonia Better Sweater is a perfect fleece sweater and excels as a cozy mid-layer. It’s thick, soft, and slim while still being one of the warmest fleece jackets. Patagonia’s fleece products have always stood out from the market in our years of testing athletic gear. It’s hard to find a more well-loved fleece than the Better Sweater. The fabulous fleece has many options, from a hooded jacket to a vest. It’s one of the first things I throw in my bag for any cool weather destination.

The Patagonia Better Sweater

Arc’teryx Beta LT

hiking in the faroes

Price: $400 | Fabric: Gore-Tex Nylon

This jacket is waterproof and windproof, but it’s also snowproof. The Arc’teryx Beta jacket features three layers of Gore-Tex with a durable, water-repellent finish that means you stay dry. The hiking jacket is packed with technology and specialty fabrics, making it a top-of-the-line investment.

It’s a top-rated jacket for weatherproofing, so it will withstand any harsh elements you may throw at it. Thanks to careful attention to fit (streamlined and flattering) and construction, this hiking jacket is equal parts practical and current – two things that will never go out of style. It’s a rain/shell jacket, so it’s not a stylish city jacket. It is a solid choice if you have the money to spend and need a jacket to hold up to the elements.

Women’s Swimsuits

londre bodywear
I love the Londre one-piece – they show off the booty!

No matter where you go, at least one swimsuit should always be in your luggage. You never know when you will find yourself at the beach or in a pool. I travel with at least two bathing suits to beach destinations to have options and never have to wear a wet suit.

Londre two piece

For a fantastic women’s swimsuit brand, we recommend Londre and Carve Designs. They make high-quality swimsuits for women. Many of their pieces are stylish yet supportive. So if you plan to go surfing, bodyboarding, kitesurfing, or play beach volleyball and want to ensure your ta-tas stay intact, these swimsuits are for you.

Women’s Undergarments For Travel

Icebreaker Siren Underwear

Hiking Underwear

Price: $24 | Fabric: Merino Wool/ Nylon/Lycra®

Similar to t-shirts, wool underwear far outperforms its cotton counterparts. Women have specific hygiene needs for underwear. To prevent bacterial infections, it’s essential to avoid wearing cotton underwear. Icebreaker Siren wool underwear is excellent for its moisture management and antimicrobial properties.

They are lightweight and easily packable, which makes them perfect for travel. I’m wearing a Siren Thong in the photo above, but they also come in a bikini version. Best of all, wool underwear can be washed and dried overnight to be ready for the next day.

Icebreaker Siren Underwear

Handful Sports Bras

Handful Sports Bras

I spend a lot of time in sports bras because they are comfortable and motivate me to stay active. No matter what kind of bra lover you are, at least one sports bra should always be in your bag. They are essential women’s travel clothing items. While I have tried many times and found Handful the most supportive and reasonably priced, they make activewear products that empower women. All their pieces are supportive, stylish, and durable.

Icebreaker Siren Bra

icebreaker siren bra - womens travel clothes

Price: $50 | Fabric: 83% merino wool/12% nylon/5% elastane

The Icebreaker Siren Bra is a perfect lightweight travel bra. Like my underwear, I’ve found Icebreaker nails it with their undergarment material. It’s comfortable and has excellent performance. It’s best suited for low-impact activities, and granted, that all depends on your cup size and needs. However, I find it super comfy for daily life when you’re not running around. I wear this bra almost daily and am constantly impressed by its comfort.

Women’s Socks For Travel

Darn Tough Micro Hiker

Darn Tough Micro Hiker
hiking around the Amalfi Coast

Price: $24 | Fabric: Merino Wool/ Nylon/Lycra®

The Darn Tough Micro Hiker is a standout hiking sock thanks to a tight, durable weave, quality material blend, and perfect fit. Their Micro Hiker offers a nice mid cushion underfoot that feels comfortable but isn’t too much. A wool synthetic blend allows the socks to warm and cool temperatures well.

Fit is excellent, and I’ve experienced no slipping or bunching. Darn Tough socks are some of the most expensive but have a lifetime warranty and exceptional durability. Socks are a crucial travel essential, and I can’t imagine traveling with cheap cotton socks on a long day.

Darn Tough Micro Hiker Socks

Smartwool Run Targeted Socks

Smartwool Run Targeted Socks

Price: $18 | Fabric: Wool/Nylon/Elastane

Smartwool’s Run Targeted Socks are an excellent option for hot weather days. It’s a light, breathable sock that ensures dry feet on hot days. The wool blend in the socks utilizes more nylon, allowing for a thinner yet still durable sock. As a result, the Run Targeted manages moisture exceptionally.

Fit is comfortable and snug without slipping or bunching, which is essential if you have plans for long days on your feet. Smartwool uses its Indestructawool in critical wear areas for increased longevity. However, in our testing, no lightweight sock will last forever.

Women’s Travel Shoes

Allbirds Runners

Allbirds Runners in France

Allbirds have billed themselves as the most comfortable shoes in the world, made to fight odor, be worn without socks, and handle the demands of life exceptionally well. They do all of this while being some of the most eco-friendly shoes in the world. It is no small feet (pun intended)!

Allbirds started with the classic Wool Runner, a simple shoe with a comfy wool upper. Since then, they’ve expanded the line to include various materials and shoes, from slip-ons to trail runners. We love their Tree Breezers for warm weather.

Allbirds Sneakers

adidas Ultraboosts

adidas Ultraboosts in Cape Town
Hiking in Cape Town in the Arc’teryx Norvan LD3

adidas Ultraboosts make perfect travel shoes for women as stylish sneakers that are uber comfortable. They hit the target between a sneaker and running shoe with enough tech to fit either environment. The sleek design with maximalist colorways is the highlight, and they look great on the feet. With a wide range of colorways and models, finding a design that fits your style is easy.

The shoes are great for gym wear and light runs. However, avid runners and hikers will want to look elsewhere as the shoes are a bit clunky and heavy. I love my Arc’teryx Norvan LD3 and Salomon Speedcross if you’re after a high-performance running shoe that is great for outdoor adventures.

Adidas Ultraboost Sneakers

Blundstones

Blundstone BL550 in Sedona

Regarding cool temperatures, I love to wear our Blundstones. With the right boots, you’ll be ready to climb the Alps, stroll through The Louvre, or eat to your heart’s content in Italy. Boots are seasonal, and I’ll leave mine at home for a trip in the summer unless we’re heading to the Nordic countries.

Blundstone Chelsea Boots

Born Julianne Flats

Born Julianne Flats in Sorrento

A pair of black flats is always great to have in a suitcase. They’re stylish and comfortable. Best of all, flats take up minimal space in your luggage. For most travelers, it’s best to avoid heels as many destinations worldwide have uneven streets. You don’t want to break an ankle trying to look good.

Flats or loafers are a great option for a dress shoe that eats little room in your luggage, unlike a pair of heels. With flats, you have stylish shoes that allow you to blend in with trendy locals and are comfortable enough to wear all day. These simple flats from Born are super comfortable and great for events involving hours of standing. These are my go-to travel shoes when we travel for business and provide presentations.

Sanuk Sling Sandals

Cameron And Natasha At Karnak Temple in Egypt
Exploring Egypt in my Sanuks

I’m a sandal person and don’t believe any travel bag is complete until I throw in a pair. We spend 90% of our time in warm destinations in a couple of sandals. It’s a wardrobe staple and immensely comfortable. When creating a cute women’s travel outfit and ensuring my feet are comfortable, I opt for Sanuk Sling Sandals.

I have multiple pairs of yoga slings. Why? Because it feels like you are walking on a yoga mat all day! I wore these all over Egypt, Greece, Bali, and on an African safari, and I still have them. They are easy to wash and insanely stylish for such a lightweight, small travel item.

Belt Bag

Belt Bag in Tbilisi
Running around Tbilisi with my belt bag from Lululemon!

Do yourself a favor and get yourself a Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag! I bought one a year ago and now go everywhere with it. Before, I was stuffing my phone in whatever pocket I had, or in my bra, or even worse – my husband’s pocket. I hated it. I couldn’t stash all my cards and makeup because I didn’t want to travel with a large purse.

And that’s where a travel belt bag came in. These small belt bags are perfect for going through the airport or venturing around a new city. There are many colors to choose from, and although they don’t look as stylish as a purse, they don’t look out of place. Plus, they are much more secure than a traditional purse, as the way they wrap around the torso would detract from any pickpockets.

Everywhere Belt Bag

Leaf Shave Safety Razor

Leaf Shave Safety Razor

Alright, I know this is not a clothing item, but I wanted to mention it as I love this travel razor and bring it with me on all my trips! Leaf Shave razors are an excellent option for the bathroom to help reduce waste. Never repurchase those cheap plastic razors; invest in a lifelong, earth-friendly product suitable for trips – or when you travel! Leaf Shave razors use recyclable steel razors that are compact and far more affordable than disposable razors.

Not only are the razors far more attractive in your bathroom, but they perform much better. They can achieve a far closer shave, which means less razor burn. The one downside is they are far easier to cause a knick, but with some care and practice, they’re easy to use.

Leaf Shave Razor

Ponytail Hat

Natasha High In The Alpine of Chamonix

I get asked about my ponytail hat all the time. It’s a staple in my travel bag as it packs up extraordinarily light and is sweat-resistant. I wear it on every hike when traveling, at the beach, or around town when the sun is intense and I want to cover my face. I wear my hair up a lot, and this hat is ideal for never having to readjust my hairstyle to fit a hat.

Sunglasses

Natasha Having A Glass Of Wine On Milos

A stylish pair of sunglasses is an excellent addition to any of these travel outfits for women. Everyone owns at least one pair of sunglasses. However, it’s best to ensure they have UV protection for the health of your eyes. I always travel with two pairs of sunglasses as we’re pretty active. A pair of Smith Optics for hiking and outdoor adventures and stylish sunglasses to wear at the beach or around town for the day.

As a sunglass snob, I love the classic styles of Persol and Rayban. There are no better fashion accessories that are critical to your eye health. I cannot imagine traveling anywhere without a pair of sunglasses. The ones above are from Persol.

Another travel item you may have seen in almost every one of these photos is my Apple Watch. I wear it just about every day of my existence. It’s safe to say it’s a part of me now.

I use the Apple Watch to track all my daily steps and every activity I perform while traveling or at home. From snowboarding to kayaking and hiking, I use it to track my activity. It keeps me conscious of my lifestyle and movement.

The Travel Jewelry Case

I don’t travel with all my best jewelry for obvious reasons, but that doesn’t mean I don’t travel with any jewelry. I love having necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings when I dress up on the road. A travel jewelry box is the best way to keep this jewelry safe and organized! It’s such a cheap travel accessory that I could not imagine traveling without.

Yes – that’s a Salty Crush dress

Lastly, it’s up to you ladies how you want to travel with all your makeup, brushes, and serums. I use a portable makeup organizer, which takes up about 1/8 of my suitcase but must have all my favorites. That being said, in my younger days, when I only had a backpack on my back and stayed in hostels, I traveled with a lot less makeup, one face lotion, and face wash, and my toiletry bag took up a lot less space. Now that we take photos and write on this blog for a living, I put more time into getting ready!

21 Best Men’s Light Jackets (Great for Travel) https://theworldpursuit.com/best-lightweight-mens-jacket-travel/ https://theworldpursuit.com/best-lightweight-mens-jacket-travel/#respond Mon, 04 Mar 2024 09:33:00 +0000 https://theworldpursuit.com/?p=35995 Are you searching for the perfect men’s light jacket for your travels, hikes, or daily life? Weather can be unpredictable, especially when you’re on the go, so you need something you can rely upon. Of course, it’s essential that the men’s lightweight jacket looks good and doesn’t break the bank too.

The best light jackets for men should keep the sun off our shoulders during the day, warm in the evening, and dry during those unexpected downpours. Oh yeah, and be light and packable enough that you barely notice it in your carry-on!

It may seem like a lot to ask for from one jacket, but we’re here to tell you it’s not. There may not be one “perfect jacket” for every man, but there is one for everyone. I share a variety of my favorite men’s lightweight jackets.

  • Material: 3-layer GORE-TEX
  • Style: Hiking/Mountaineering

Pros

  • Exceptional Protection
  • Durable
  • Performance Style

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Athletic Style

The Arc’teryx Beta LT is our favorite outdoor adventure jacket as it provides awesome protection from the elements. Arc’teryx is a brand beloved by the mountaineering and climbing community as they know how to make a robust shell jacket. The Beta LT uses 3L GORE-TEX® fabric and a bombproof build that will keep you dry and comfortable no matter the weather.

It comes with a lot of great features for protection against the elements. The downside of the jacket is that it’s very expensive. If you’re occasionally active outdoors, you likely don’t need the exceptional protection of the jacket. We recommend it as a solid investment for active men who are fanatics of sports like mountain biking, climbing, skiing, camping, or hiking.

  • Material: Canvas
  • Style: Western/Workwear

Pros

  • Stylish
  • Wonderful Quality

Cons

  • Heavier

This is the jacket if you want a no-frills shell jacket designed to be used and abused. Filson’s workwear has faithfully served men for decades due to its exceptional quality. A staple of their line is the Filson Tin Cloth Work Jacket which has been in circulation since the 1930s. The rugged jacket displays a classic style that feels appropriate on city streets or a ranch.

Oil-finished canvas provides reliable protection and ages gracefully as a jacket that remains in your wardrobe for years. Most importantly, the coat can easily fight a chill and break the wind thanks to the heavy material. Its roots are tied with loggers, ranchers, and outdoorsmen, so it features a casual cut for work and layers. The cut can be negative or positive, depending on your needs. It’s a great jacket for any wild adventure you may find.

  • Style: Atheltic/Casual Fleece

Pros

  • Super Comfortable
  • Reliable Performance

Cons

  • Fleece Doesn’t Replace Many Jackets

The Patagonia Better Sweater is a perfect fleece sweater and excels as a cozy mid-layer. It’s thick, soft, and slim while still being one of the warmest fleece jackets on the market. Patagonia’s fleece products have always stood out from the market in our years of testing athletic gear.

The jacket’s cost is high compared to a standard fleece jacket. However, the quality and durable material provide some excellent longevity. I’ve had my Better Sweater for seven years and it has seen plenty of use. The Better Sweater comes in either a 1/4 zip pullover or a full zip-up jacket.

Arc’teryx Cerium Down Hoodie

Men's Light Jacket Arc'teryx Cerium Down Hoodie Jacket

Product Details

  • MSRP: $400
  • Weight: 11.8 oz.
  • Material: Goose Down / Nylon
  • Style: Athletic Down Jacket

Pros

  • Super Lightweight
  • Excellent Fit

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Fit Doesn’t Work For Everyone

The Arc’teryx Cerium Down Jacket is incredible and one of our favorite lightweight jackets for men. Down jackets have many benefits, but the exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio makes them great light jackets. The Cerium can achieve this with high-quality 850-fill-power goose down. At the same time, a lightweight nylon 10D shell makes for an incredibly light outer layer that protects from the elements.

I love the high-tech design feature of composite mapping. Arc’teryx has effectively added a small amount of Coreloft synthetic insulation to areas prone to moisture. The synthetic material is vitalized around the shoulders, collar, cuffs, and, most importantly, underarms.

The jacket is well-loved by outdoor enthusiasts and is put to the test daily. It shouldn’t be a surprise that it has an excellent reputation. The Cerium Down Jacket is a solid choice for more active men in cooler weather. It has become my go-to down jacket and is used for active holidays in the mountains. It’s easily the best packable down jacket, but you’ll have to pay for that performance.

If comfort and classic style are what you’re after, you can beat Levi’s Sherpa Trucker Jacket. The denim jacket has been a style icon for decades and is always among the best men’s lightweight jackets. A cozy interior that is fleece and quilted flannel provides plenty of warmth.

While the exterior features various fabric choices, the classic is denim. Levi’s knows how to construct high-quality denim that does not stretch but will mold to the body. Finding a jacket that will only fit better with time is tough. Fit is slim, and it doesn’t feel overly boxy or loose despite the fleece and wide collar style. Not everyone needs a rain jacket that will hold up to an ocean wave or downpour. The Precip scratches that itch between wanting a cheap packable jacket and getting a quality piece of gear — it’s a fraction of the price of the Arc’teryx jacket above.

It’s also a sharp-looking jacket that feels at home in the mountains or running errands in town. It’s so great you can even wear it as a ski jacket. We love a piece that feels this universal, thus better value despite a high price tag.

Pros

  • Versatile
  • Value

Cons

  • Lackluster

With their Bugaboo II Fleece Interchange, you will have the 3-in-1 ability to change back and forth from the cozy fleece inner layer to the waterproof shell in seconds.

Arc’teryx Atom LT Hoody

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hoody

Product Details

  • MSRP: $259
  • Weight: 13.2 oz.
  • Material: Polyester/Elastane
  • Style: Synthetic Down Jacket

Pros

  • Weather Resistance
  • Comfortable

Cons

  • Expensive

Arc’teryx makes this list of hiking jackets a lot, but it does carry a big reputation for a reason. One of their best-selling jackets is the Atom LT, a tremendously lightweight and warm mid-layer jacket. They’ve taken the stance that it’s not broken, don’t fix it, and the jacket has remained the same for years. The Atom delivers everything you want mid-layer between warmth, mobility, and fit.

It has a drawback; the outer shell is excellent at letting heat escape, but it also means that wind cuts through the jacket. Altogether, this is an ideal jacket for those who enjoy sports outdoors in cold weather, like hiking, climbing, backpacking, ski touring, or snowboarding.

REI Co-op Stormbolt GTX

REI Co-op Stormbolt GTX

Product Details

  • MSRP: $279
  • Weight: 14.6 oz.
  • Material: 3L Gore-Tex
  • Style: Shell Jacket

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Excellent Value

Cons

  • Lacks Key Features

REI Co-op makes some awesome products that offer a lot of value. Their Drypoint GTX is a fantastic example for those seeking a technical jacket that doesn’t break the bank, disclosure it’s expensive. However, with this jacket, you’re getting tremendous value from a waterproof/weatherproof shell jacket.

The jacket shell is durable and protects against the elements while the interior remains soft and dry. We like the features such as hand pockets, waist cinches, vents, a comfortable hood, and cuff adjustments.

If you’re not an avid outdoor enthusiast, don’t fret, as this hybrid jacket blends elements for an everyday and technical hiking jacket. You’ll notice it mainly in the cut of the jacket. This lightweight jacket can easily roll into the hood for travel days or ride in your daypack. It’s a good men’s jacket for travel.

How to Pick one of the best light jackets for men?

Style

Style is always an issue for rain jackets and light jackets for men, particularly those made for wetter climates. It’s pretty easy to start to dislike a particular coat because, while functional, it doesn’t have any style or look.

We’ve kept this list of jackets narrowed to options that give you a certain versatility and a sleek and understated look so you won’t feel clunky, boxy, or out of place. Plus, something you’ll be happy to wear when you’re back home, on your way to work, or just out and about on your day off.

Material

Material plays the most critical role in the quality of a jacket, and it’s easy to distinguish jacket quality when you begin with the materials used. To make things easier, here are the five primary materials you’ll find in the jackets ranked. It’s also interesting to note that as the material increases in technical functions, it also sacrifices looks and style.

Gore-Tex

To understand how GORE-TEX works, it’s helpful first to understand the two main methods of waterproofing: coating and laminating. Coating involves spreading a thin layer of hydrophobic material over the exterior of a jacket, allowing the fabric to absorb weather-resistant properties.

This method is commonly used on nylon, polyester, and cotton and is known as DWR (durable water repellent). While it is a cheaper form of waterproofing, it is not fully waterproof and can break down over time with washing. Products like Scotchguard can be used to restore the DWR.

On the other hand, laminating is a more expensive and effective form of waterproofing. The most well-known example is GORE-TEX, a brand name for a material made by bonding a cross weave of nylon fabrics to create a waterproof material. This method provides reliable waterproof protection and is commonly used in outdoor gear.

Nylon

Nylon is a great product and what you find throughout most outdoor gear. It offers excellent weight to strength. Nylon is also water-resistant, breathable, and quick-drying.

Canvas

Smack dab in the middle of this list is Canvas. It requires wax or coating to remain water and weather-resistant. The best example is the hiking jackets on offer from Fjallraven; they use their proprietary G-1000 canvas material.

Polyester

Polyester is super prevalent. It’s a cheaper material and one of the best ways to distinguish high-end vs. more affordable options. Polyester has a lower fail rate, easier to snag, and requires a weather-resistant coating to remain water-resistant, which breaks down over time.

Cotton

Cotton is a classic style, but it’s not great when it comes down to jackets. It’s soft but absorbs moisture. We never advise wearing cotton in cold or wet weather environments.

Water Resistance

best men's light jackets
The best men’s lightweight jacket

If you’ve ever been caught in an unexpected downpour while traveling, you know what a dampener it can put on the rest of your day. So, finding a travel jacket with some water resistance is a biggy.

Nylon and polyester jackets are great for this. They have natural moisture-wicking abilities and usually come with a waterproof coating that keeps the rain from getting through. Cotton, on the other hand, while comfortable, is awful in this scenario. This material gets soggy and misshapen and can take hours to dry, leaving you cranky and miserable for the rest of the day.

Wrinkle Resistance

Best Packing Cubes

Picking a great mens travel jacket means getting something wrinkle resistant. When traveling in the summer or dry, summer-like climates, chances are your jacket will be stuffed into your bag or thrown in your suitcase. So, when the time arises that you need it, it will likely be a wrinkled disaster. Luckily, many fabrics are naturally wrinkle-resistant.

Merino wool is a fan favorite. It’s soft and comfortable against the skin while holding its smooth shape even after days of being stuck at the bottom of your travel bag. Polyester is another good one. Like Merino wool, it maintains its shape and is highly comfortable. It’s also one of the most accessible fabrics, which is a bonus! Again, you want to stay away from cotton and ultra-thin nylon here.

Breathability

men's travel jackets
Hiking Near Mont Blanc / Light jackets for men

Even when faced with the coldest climates, you still want a men’s travel jacket that gives you some form of breathability. Without it, you’re likely to get sweaty and sticky underneath, and that’s never comfortable. Breathability comes in a few states, some inherent in the fabrics and some as an added feature.

Jackets with a “mesh-lined yolk” will give you maximum airflow where you need it most while keeping the cold air out. This feature benefits winter jackets for travel with warm down or synthetic fill that traps the heat. Also, jackets made from Merino wool, nylon, and polyester have significant degrees of breathability. I think you might be able to tell what our favorite fabrics will be at this point!

Packability

Packable Light Men's Jacket
A good mens light jacket means is packs up light

While traveling, it’s a no-brainer to bring clothing that can squish down to a reasonable size. All the more room for those knick-knacks and souvenirs you will pick up along the way! So, finding a minimalistic men’s travel jacket when packed down is significant, and there are a few ways that lightweight travel jackets achieve this.

First, some come with compression sacks. It will be a small bag that will scrunch down your jacket to its smallest size so you can easily throw it into the side of your bag or luggage. Another way is finding a jacket that packs down into its pocket.

It eliminates the concern of losing accessories but allows you to ball up the jacket into its tiniest dimensions. You can also lay your jacket flat at the bottom of your suitcase and pack your other belongings on top, as long as it’s thin enough.

Pockets

Pockets are a great addition to everyday wear, but they have become almost a dealbreaker for jackets for travel. These handy inventions keep you from lugging a heavy bag everywhere to take your credit cards, cash, and passport. Even in a chilly airport, having a jacket with plenty of front pockets will allow you to quickly access your tickets and identification without scrolling through your suitcase.

Some men’s lightweight travel jackets will even come with RFID internal chest pockets, where you know your passport will be safe. Also, hip pockets are a great way to warm up your hands quickly on those chilly days when you don’t want to carry gloves around.

Ability to Layer

Cameron In A Light Jacket For Men

Another significant characteristic that the best travel jackets have is the ability to layer. If the coat is too bulky or form-fitting, you will lose the ability to layer sweaters underneath or a vest over the top. This is especially important in those fast-changing climates where you need to be extra prepared for weather shifts!

You will want to look for slightly loose jackets while also being thin enough to throw in extra layers. We recommend wearing bulky clothes and bringing an extra jacket when you try jackets on.

10 BEST Travel Shoes For Women https://theworldpursuit.com/best-womens-travel-shoes/ https://theworldpursuit.com/best-womens-travel-shoes/#comments Sun, 03 Mar 2024 00:30:00 +0000 https://theworldpursuit.com/?p=5404 In search of the best travel shoes for women? This post covers the basics of the best women’s travel shoes and what we look for in our footwear. This fantastic collection of cute travel shoes is comfortable and stylish. Shoes are arguably an essential item to consider when packing for your travels. A good pair of shoes for travel may not be the most exciting thing in a suitcase, but comfortable feet can make or break your day. We walk a lot when we travel.

It may seem simple, but there are a lot of factors that contribute to a good pair of travel shoes for women. These shoes are all packed with comfort and style in mind. I’ve highlighted a good mix of trends and key facets.

Best Travel Shoes For Women

Allbirds Wool Runners

Allbirds Wool Runners

Pros

  • Super Comfortable
  • Sustainable Materials
  • Wide Colorway Choices
  • Simple Style
  • Antimicrobial Wool Properties

Cons

  • The “Toe Hump”
  • Longevity

If you’re shopping for a new pair of women’s travel shoes, you’ve likely come across Allbirds Wool Runners on the internet. They’ve billed themselves as the most comfortable shoes in the world, made to fight odor, be worn without socks, and handle the demands of travel exceptionally. Those are all tall claims.

While you can undoubtedly contest the claim they are the most comfortable shoe on earth, they are amazing. Allbirds try to source sustainable materials for their shoes, which we love. The style is also great; they look even better in person than online with high-quality details.

The feeling of wearing them is best compared to a comfortable and cozy wool sweater. If that sounds hot for travel in a warm destination, they make a breezy Tree Runner version of the shoe. Fit is exceptional as they come a little tight but stretch to fit your feet like magic on your first day of wearing. Wool’s properties, such as odor and dirt resistance, make these unique. They’re also machine washable, dry quickly, and can keep your feet warm even when wet.

As the shoe uppers are made of thick wool fabric, you can see the big toe through the top of the shoe. The “toe hump” detracts from many, and it’s a little polarizing, but we still love the shoe. As it is wool, you can wear thin spots in the fabric if your feet move around a lot in the interior. We’ve never experienced premature wear in these shoes.

Vans Classic Slip-On

Van's Classic Slip-On Makes An Excellent Travel Shoe For Women

Pros

  • Simple Shoe To Match
  • Cute With Lots Of Colorways
  • Easy On & Off

Cons

  • Durability
  • Lacks Arch Support

When I want the comfort of a shoe but don’t want something as big as sneakers, I love a pair of slip-on shoes. They make airport security a breeze and take up minimal room in my suitcase, so it’s easy to pack and travel light. Since they’re low profile, they can work with many outfits and settings.

Despite being the first time on this list of the best women’s travel shoes, we love Vans. Their classic slip-on is super comfortable and can be worn with or without socks. Vans’ classic slip-on blur the line between sneakers and slip-on shoes and look great with a pair of jeans or shorts.

They require a break-in period with socks as the back is made of leather and creates a tacky sensation that can cause blisters if you’re barefoot. We love a pair of shoes for around $50, so you have more money for travel.

Vans Classic Slip-On

adidas Ultraboosts

Women's adidas Ultraboost Travel Shoe

Pros

  • Excellent Urban Style
  • Huge Range Of Colorways & Limited Edition Versions
  • Super Comfortable
  • Maximalism Style

Cons

  • Not Technical Running Shoes

adidas Ultraboosts make some of the best travel shoes for women as they’re stylish sneakers and very comfortable. They hit the target between a sneaker and running shoe with enough tech to fit either environment. The sleek design with maximalist colorways is the highlight, and they look great on the feet. With a wide range of colorways and models, it’s easy to find a design that fits your style.

It uses a Primeknit upper and fits like a slip-on for a great fit on the top of the shoe. A plastic midfoot cage with laces allows for adjustment in fit despite the slip-on design. That upper is comfortable and fits well, but the knit is breathable, which keeps the shoes fresh. Under the foot are a heavily cushioned midsole and high stack height for exceptionally comfortable shoes. However, that does sacrifice some performance.

Avid runners or hikers will want to look elsewhere as the shoes are a little clunky and heavy. The travel shoes for women are great for gym wear and light runs for most. We have an excellent recommendation for the Arc’teryx Norvan LD3 below if you’re after a high-performance running shoe.

Born Julianne

Best Womens Walking Shoes Comfortable Flats Brown

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Very Compact To Pack
  • Professional
  • Stylish

Cons

  • Lacks Support
  • Not Suited For Any Athletics

A pair of flats is always great to have in a suitcase. They’re stylish and comfortable. Best of all, flats take up minimal space in your luggage. For most travel, it’s best to avoid heels as many destinations worldwide have uneven streets. You don’t want to break an ankle trying to look good.

Flats or loafers are a great option for a dress shoe that eats little room in your luggage, unlike a pair of heels. With flats, you can find stylish shoes that allow you to blend in with trendy locals and are comfortable enough to wear all day.

These simple flats from Born are super comfortable and great for events involving hours of standing. These are my go-to women’s travel shoes when we travel for business and provide presentations.

Vivobarefoot Gobi III

Pros

  • Superb Packability
  • Foot Health Benefits
  • Leather Upper
  • Durability

Cons

  • Wide Toe Box Style
  • Barefoot Tech Is Polarizing

Many foot and joint issues plague modern-day humans from overdesigned shoes. Most shoes cause our feet to move unnaturally, making our feet wither! VivoBarefoot is a company here to fix our troubled feet the natural way.

These trendy shoes have made waves with health enthusiasts and minimalists obsessed with details. The shoes last longer than traditional sneakers due to the build quality and lack of midsole. The leather upper style makes for an excellent women’s shoe that works in various environments.

These shoes pack up well in a suitcase for the ultimate travel shoe. The leather uppers and grippy soles make the shoes decent for short hikes and rugged terrain. Arc’teryx Norvan LD3

Arc'teryx Norvan LD3

Pros

  • Ultra Lightweight
  • Very Comfortable
  • Aggressive Heel To Toe
  • Great Outsole Grip
  • Style

Cons

  • Protection Over Foot
  • Very Athletic Style
  • Durability
  • Expensive

The Arc’teryx Norvan LD3 is the third iteration of the model, and they have delivered a new classic trail running shoe. It’s an exceptionally light trail runner that offers plenty of cushion in the midsole and a pleasurable ride. Style is excellent in these shoes, and they’re one of the sharpest-looking trail runners we’ve had the pleasure of testing.

Underfoot is a stiff Vibram mega grip outsole that grips terrain reliably and provides good protection underfoot. The sole isn’t too stiff; it has the right amount of flex and a fast transition. Fit is nice with a wide toe box, great for women, and a secure lockdown that keeps the foot in place.

These shoes have the highest price tag for a women’s travel shoe that will likely wear out sooner than more conventional shoes. It’s our trail running shoe and what we’ll wear this summer.

Rainbow Sandal

Pros

  • High-Quality Leather Finish
  • Classic Style
  • Wide Color Selection
  • Durability

Cons

  • Casual Use Only
  • Thong Flip-Flop

I’m a sandal person and don’t believe any travel bag is complete until I throw in a pair. In warm destinations, we spend 90% of our time in a pair of sandals. It’s a wardrobe staple and immensely comfortable. The Rainbow Sandal is a thong flip-flop that has a straightforward design. They are nothing like those crappy rubber flip-flops many wear.

The sandals use premium leather and nylon thread, while layers are triple glued for optimal durability. Perhaps what makes these so great is the high arch in the midsole. It allows me to wear sandals all day. It’s a sandal you can wear all day and never think twice about your feet.

Rainbow Leather Sandals

Ecco Soft 7 Sneaker

Ecco Soft 7 Sneaker

  • Durability

Cons

  • Casual Use Only

The classic travel shoe is comfortable and stylish with high-quality leather. Ecco’s elegant look feels relaxed but mature enough to be worn by all ages. It’s a classic shoe that’s highly versatile and comfortable. Thanks to its simple leather design, the shoes look more appropriate for dressier occasions such as business environments, restaurants, and bars.

It’s tough to fault these shoes as the craftsmanship is better than most of the shoes on this list. The leather laces and thick soles ensure a pair of shoes with plenty of longevity for many future trips. The shoe insole is leather molded for reliable comfort and breathability.

While the shoe is comfortable for walking all day, it is a heavier sneaker. It means they’re not suitable for athletics or hiking. However, the versatile shoes sit right between a dress shoe and a traditional sneaker.

Birkenstock Arizona

Birkenstock Arizona Best Travel Sandals

Pros

  • High-Quality Leather Finish
  • Durability
  • Conforming Midsole
  • Cork Materials

Cons

  • Outdoorsy Look

Not everyone loves thong sandals that go between the toes. For straps over the feet, it’s easy to choose Birkenstocks. Birkenstocks are some of the most loved sandals for a good reason. They’re the perfect everyday wear because the sole conforms to the shape of your foot for the ultimate support.

I’m partial to the Mayari as they’re more feminine than the original Arizona style, though you can’t go wrong with either. The neutral heel profile and deep heel cups keep the weight of your body evenly distributed across your feet for the ideal comfort.

They’re perfect for travel as they are so comfortable and you can spend all summer in them without any problems. Birkenstocks come with the highest price tag on this list, but they’re well worth the price for the comfort and warranty and long shelf life.

Blundstone 550

Blundstone Leather Boot Safari Clothes

Pros

  • Style
  • Comfort
  • Decent Performance Hiking
  • Unisex

Cons

  • Non-Technical Performance
  • Slip-On Style

These are great all year round as you can never go wrong with a pair of leather boots. Women can wear them with a pair of chinos and a blouse, while men can pair them with just about anything from jeans, chinos, and even a suit. These are a staple and our primary footwear during the cooler months if visiting in winter. Our leather boot of choice is a pair of Blundstones.

The 550 and 585 are considered Blundstone’s most classic boot designs. It’s tough to tell the difference in the design because there is none. The difference has to do with the leather upper leather of the boot. 550 boots feature full-grain leather, while 585 have suede nubuck leather.

Types Of Travel Shoes for Women

Sneakers

Sneakers are a great call for any trip. Neither of us likes to fly with sandals as it feels a little gross, for starters. Then when it comes to extended travel days that involve a lot of walking, you want comfortable closed-toe shoes with a thick sole.

Of course, walking around the streets of a major city, you don’t want to look like you’re on the way to the gym so opt for a stylish trainer. Sneakers should be simple, fashionable, comfortable, and, most importantly, affordable. These shoes are under $100, with several under $50, so you can save more for travel!

Flats

A pair of comfortable flats for women is always great to have in a suitcase. They’re stylish and comfortable, and they take up minimal space in your luggage. My tip is to avoid heels, as many destinations worldwide have uneven streets, and you don’t want to break an ankle trying to look good.

Flats or loafers are a great option for a dress shoe that eats little room in your luggage, unlike a pair of heels. With flats, you can find a pair of shoes that look stylish, allow you to blend in with stylish locals, and are comfortable enough to wear all day.

Sandals

I’m a sandal person and don’t believe any travel bag is complete until I throw in a pair (unless of course it’s December in the Swiss Alps). Sandals are always a great call in the spring and summer, plus you’d look pretty weird in a pair of shoes at the beach! I’ve selected a range of sandals that should offer anything you may need.

Boots

Travel for women doesn’t have to be all about dresses, sipping cappuccinos, or enjoying a coconut on the beach; sometimes, you want to get out and explore. I love getting out in the mountains so much that we now call it home and feel more comfortable in a pair of hiking boots than heels. Many trips and destinations call for more robust shoes, and that’s when I reach for a pair of hiking boots.

What to Consider When Buying Women’s Travel Shoes

Destination

Exploring Austria in my Allbirds

As you undoubtedly already know, matching your shoe choice to your destination is crucial. You wouldn’t take a stylish pair of sandals to Iceland in the winter any more than you would take a couple of clunky hiking boots for a trip to Paris. Your first step is, therefore, straightforward: do some research. Where are you going? What weather are you expecting; hot or cold, wet or dry?

Once you’ve got your destination sorted, it’s time to consider what you’re planning to do. Are you looking to spend your trip pounding the pavement in a city as you visit the sights and local eateries? Or are you perhaps hoping to jump out to the mountain and get some intense trail runs and hikes under your belt? Or maybe you’re right in the middle, with a healthy balance of city and nature. In any case, your activities will correlate directly with the performance of your travel shoes.

Performance

Hiking in Cape Town with the Arc’teryx Norvan

Performance correlates heavily to your destination research. Once you’ve selected your destination and the activities you’re looking to do, take a very close look at the overall performance of the shoes you are considering.

It means delving into the shoe specifics. Are the shoes waterproof? What’s the upper made of, and how long will it last? Is the sole durable enough for what you’re planning to do? What’s the comfort rating? Will your feet be screaming after spending all day in these shoes?

We’ve tried to answer many of these questions with our forthcoming shoe descriptions. But always consider what you plan to do with these shoes. Out on the mountains 90% of the time? Then high performance is the way to go. On the other hand, if you spend most of your time enjoying the city, you’ll probably spend more time thinking about design.

Design

Although a non-issue in most cases, design, and appearance can play a huge role in travel situations. Most seasoned travelers, this writer included, blanch at being pegged as a tourist the moment they step off the plane.

If you look like a bumbling tourist, it opens the floodgates to being targeted by scammers, inflated cab prices, and petty thievery in some cases. We know that your favorite running shoes are incredibly comfortable, but rest assured, nearly everyone and their dog will know you’re a tourist as soon as you leave North America. If this concerns you, take the time to consider what the locals are wearing and factor that into your decision-making process.

Cleaning

Shoes get dirty, plain and simple. They will eventually get soiled no matter where we wear them. However, if you’re on a trip and have condensed your standard top three pairs of shoes down to one travel pair, your travel shoes will get dirty even faster.

Shoes that need a little brush down or the occasional rinse are preferred. Those that require a special cleaning agent get gouged easily, or need in-depth preventative layers applied all the time, will be quick to rack up annoyance points.

How to Travel With Your Shoes

The Faroe Islands in my Blundstones

I always travel with shoes in a separate part of my luggage. I don’t want the dust and dirt from the street to get on my clothes. If I’m traveling in a suitcase, I will place my shoes in either a reusable bag or a packing cube and place the soles up at the bottom of my bag. My travel shoes never go next to my best outfits, just in case they get dirt everywhere. See more of our packing hacks here.

If I am on a backpacking trip, I will still wrap my shoes in a reusable bag and place them at the bottom of the backpack. If they are travel flip-flops or rugged tennis shoes, I will wrap them by their shoelaces outside the bag or place them on the side holders. Just watch out for theft if you leave your suitcase!

There are at least two pairs of shoes in my bag, but sometimes more, depending on where I travel and the season.

  • Sneakers: For everyday use and exploring.
  • Casual Shoe: I use this as a dress shoe or nice leather boot.

Insoles

Walking Shoes Insoles

Superfeet is a great affordable option for insoles if you have mild foot pain. I don’t know if I’d recommend them for someone with plantar fasciitis. They don’t operate like those cheap gel insets you find at the drug store but focus on adequately distributing your weight across your feet. The result is better comfort, foot health, and even back health in the long run. The Superfeet Green is by far the most popular option.

Patagonia Down Sweater Vest

Best Down Vest Patagonia Sweater Vest

Pros

  • Warmth
  • Slim Cut
  • Stylish
  • Quality

Cons

  • Expensive

Patagonia makes our favorite packable down jacket, so it’s no wonder they make one of the best down vests for travel. The down vest uses 800 fill down and their new recycled polyester for the shell. The result is a down vest that keeps you warm and does decent job-fighting moisture. We also find Patagonia’s nylon material extraordinarily comfortable without the obnoxious crinkly/swishy sounds cheaper down items make.

With its wide range of colors and appealing brand name, the down vest feels at home in the mountains, the beach, or city streets. The only drawback to the garment is the high price tag that comes with Patagonia vests. It’s also not the warmest down vest on this list, but it retains a slim fit and is attractive.

Filson Oil Tin Cloth Vest

Filson Oil Tin Cloth Vest

Pros

  • High-End Feel
  • Outdoor Style
  • Quality
  • Durability
  • Lifetime Quality Product
  • Decent Pockets

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Pockets Are For Work Vs. Travel

This iconic vest uses Filson’s heavy, abrasion-resistant, and water-repellent Tin Cloth canvas. It’s a work vest for rough work on the ranch, operating an angle grinder, chopping wood, or in the garage. That rough-and-tumble look makes for a gorgeous piece of clothing that will last a lifetime.

It may not be your standard travel vest, but this vest is up for an adventure—a stylish piece of workwear. Be prepared for a wait as this piece of clothing is in high demand and sometimes requires a waitlist. The only negative I can find with this vest is the price. It was pretty expensive. However, given its lifespan, one could argue it’s better value than the budget-conscious Columbia vest below.

  • Retro Look

Cons

  • Costly

The combination of style, performance, and value makes Cotopaxi’s Fuego Down Vest an excellent purchase. It features a 20-D shell with unique colorways that match current trends well. The attractive retro looks combined with actual performance, like a premium 800-fill down for one of our favorite down vests.

You can expect a light 8 ounce jacket filled with800-fill goose down. Although this vest is light, it has heavy-duty 20D ripstop nylon and elastic binding at the arm cuffs and hem. We recommend this vest if you are traveling for an outdoor or hiking adventure!

Cotopaxi stands behind its “61 years” guarantee for good, which claims its products are suitable for at least 61 years. After testing out this jacket, we can attest to that. We also love that Cotopaxi gives back to some of the world’s poorest communities, improving health, education, and livelihoods.

Columbia Benton Springs Fleece Vest

Cons

  • Lacks Many Pockets

Many outdoor and travel enthusiasts associate Columbia’s name with quality and decent value. Columbia’s Women’s Benton Springs vest is one of the most affordable on the market, priced at less than $50.

The fleece vest is full-zip and features two zippered front pockets to warm your hands. Basic and comfortable polyester fleece is used in construction but offers little durability or natural warmth. Fit is decent and strikes a nice balance between roomy and athletic to fit most body types excellently.

It’s best utilized as a layer because any breeze tends to pass right through the thin fleece material. Finding a more affordable fleece travel vest in terms of quality is challenging. Color choice is also plentiful, with well over 20 color options to choose from online.

Ranking Vests For Travel

Pockets and Pockets

Natasha in a travel vest while on safari in South Africa

The ideal travel vest is, first and foremost, an array of different pockets to ensure that everything you possibly need on a typical day in your trip can easily find a home. It can benefit female travelers; we all know that many of the best and most comfortable women’s pants are painfully pocket-deficient. Therefore, a good travel vest can eliminate a clunky purse that risks theft in an unfamiliar city.

But the male traveler can equally benefit from a travel vest that compiles everything you could need into one place—no more unslinging a backpack to try and hunt for tickets or opening and closing a briefcase to fish out a passport during your travel day. So once again, pockets and more pockets! Make sure your travel vest can fit everything you want to have on you for your day.

The best vests with pockets is easily ScottEVest.

Construction

Natasha. Wearing A Vest Stis In A Field Of Lupines In Iceland

It’s always important when purchasing travel clothes to consider the quality and material used. Synthetic materials for standout vests as they’re quick to dry, which can keep you cool or warm. At the same time, cotton articles tend to hold moisture and are slow to dry. It is crucial in cold weather destinations with snow/rain or tropical destinations high in humidity.

When looking through different brands and types, one element that we are always looking for is durability. You want to ensure the vest lasts for your trip(s) and beyond! Pay close attention to your vest’s manufacturing and material/stitching quality. Is it an established manufacturer or an off-brand?

Do they stand behind their product and offer an extended warranty? While at it, look and see if the vest is water-resistant if you’re heading into a wet environment. If you’re traveling to dry and sunny climes, check if the vest is UV-resistant.

This is why we love the Arcteryx Atom Vests!

Security

Tasha wears a travel vest in Egypt

As we alluded to earlier, traveling the world always risks becoming the victim of petty theft. A vest eliminates the need for extra bags by condensing all your gear down. It isn’t foolproof protection from pickpockets or thieves, but it allows you to keep a better eye on your belongings. It is essential because it reduces risks, as thieves have fewer opportunities with a travel vest.

An RFID pocket is a nice touch, but it’s a little outdated and more for marketing. It’s an obsolete tactic, as skimming a chip card is impossible. So the practice is falling out of fashion with thieves, particularly in Europe, where everything is a chip. We highly recommend you look for travel vests with hidden pockets to carry your valuables, as the classic pickpocket is a more significant threat.

Comfort and Style

Natasha Stands Along Lake in Iceland wearing a Patagonia travel vest

It may seem like a no-brainer, but please try to track down a vest that will be comfortable for you to wear and is suitable for your travel plans. If you’re heading to a warm tropical location, a bulky and heavy-duty vest may not be the most appropriate – aim for something a little lighter such as nylon or polyester!

Along these same lines, you’re likely to draw some unneeded attention if you’re strolling down the city streets in an oversized, safari-style vest draped with pockets; aim for something more city appropriate, eh?

The 15 Best Men’s Travel Shoes https://theworldpursuit.com/best-travel-shoes-men/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 00:09:00 +0000 https://theworldpursuit.com/?p=23041 Are you seeking the best men’s travel shoes for your next trip? Preparing for a trip always includes a flurry of lists, packing, and getting your gear squared away. From a few days to month-long trips, picking just the right items for your journey is always stressful. A pair of travel shoes may be the most important thing you pack.

You want a shoe that’s comfortable but durable. Practical yet stylish. Breathable but protective. You almost certainly have 2 or 3 pairs that, between them, accomplish this, but you can’t lug all of them across the world on your trip. No travel shoe will achieve all of this. The best packing strategy is to pack the right shoe for the right destination.

The most versatile shoe we pack for a trip is the classic sneaker. Of course, walking around the streets of a major city, you don’t want to look like you’re on the way to the gym, so opt for a casual sneaker. The best travel shoes for men should be simple, fashionable, comfortable, and, most importantly, affordable.

There Is No “One” or “Best” Travel Shoe

There are too many styles, climates, trips, and personal opinions for a single shoe to work for everyone. Even amongst ardent minimalists, no shoe can do it all, and often the best solution is two shoes for a trip. Most trips fall into the following categories: business travel, leisure travel, and beach/casual.

Shoe Combo Recommendations
Trip StyleShoe Type
Business TravelComfortable Dress Shoe + Athletic Shoe
Leisure TravelComfortable Casual Shoe + Athletic Shoe
Beach/CasualComfortable Casual/Atheltic Shoe + Sandals

Business can be the most difficult to pack for, but it’s a great example of how much footwear can vary amongst professions. You can’t replace a proper dress shoe for more formal occasions, so we like to pair it with a more casual athletic shoe for exploration outside the office and gym time.

Sneakers are a great call for any trip. For starters, men in sandals on a plane feel a little gross and slobbish. Then when it comes to extended travel days that involve a lot of walking, you want comfortable closed-toe shoes with thick soles. We suggest you pair casual shoes with athletic shoes for gym time or activities like hikes or bikes.

You can’t take a beach trip without sandals, essential for any hot weather trip. What type of shoe you pair with a beach trip depends on personal priorities, but I prefer a versatile athletic shoe that can be used in the gym or hiking.

Swapping the casual shoe for a versatile waterproof boot is great during colder seasons. A sharp-looking pair of Chelsea boots are versatile and can even work in business with a suit. It’s the most versatile boot you can choose, while the most versatile sneaker is an athletic sneaker with black uppers and soles.

Hoka OneOne Clifton 9

Hoka OneOne Clifton 9 All Black - Travel Shoe For Men
Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Very Comfortable
  • Great Cushion Underfoot
  • Excellent Performance
Cons
  • Running Sneaker Style

It’s tough to beat the Hoka OneOne’s Clifton 9 performance. They’re a beloved and reliable running shoe with plenty of underfoot cushion. It’s great for long travel days that involve a hefty amount of walking. We regularly walk 10+ miles a day when visiting European cities.

Hoka OneOne specializes in neutral running shoes, providing fantastic arch support and a stable platform to assist people who pronate or have flat feet. It makes them an excellent shoe choice for those with foot pain, not just athletes.

It’s not just the sidewalk where these sneakers excel, but adventure activities. They do a respectable job for hikes, trail runs, or even bike rides. On top of the excellent performance, it’s a pretty sharp-looking shoe if you choose the right colorway. I prefer the all-black as it looks the least like a traditional running shoe.

We like Clifton as they’re the most versatile active shoe for everyday life. They are appropriate in the gym, running on the road, or the trail. It’s a great option if you’d like a lot of bang for your buck. These shoes feel great for the athletic crowd or those who prize comfortable shoes.

Allbirds Tree Runners

Allbirds Tree Runners
Pros
  • Super Comfortable
  • Sustainable Materials
  • Wide Colorway Choices
  • Simple Style
  • Antimicrobial Wool Properties
Cons
  • The “Toe Hump”
  • Longevity
  • Soft Sole Lacks Support
  • Poor Athletic Performance

If you’re shopping for a new pair of men’s travel shoes, you’ve likely seen Allbirds online. They’ve billed themselves as the most comfortable shoes in the world, made to fight odor, be worn without socks, and handle the demands of travel exceptionally. Those are all tall claims. While you can undoubtedly contest the claim they are the most comfortable shoes on earth, there is no doubt they are comfortable.

Most importantly, Allbirds try to source sustainable materials for their shoes, which we love. The simple style provides them with a fair amount of versatility. The original Wool Runners are too warm for hot weather, so we prefer the Tree Runners or Dashers for travel. Tree Runners utilize eucalyptus Tencel uppers that provide stretch to fit a wide range of feet without any risk of pinch points.

We appreciate that the fabric is naturally breathable and provides excellent odor and dirt resistance. They’re also machine washable and dry quickly. As the shoe uppers are made from a thick fabric, you can see the big toe through the top of the shoe. The “toe hump” detracts many, and it’s a little polarizing, but we still love the shoe.

There are a few more negatives. One is that you can wear thin spots in the fabric if your feet move around a lot in the interior. However, we’ve never experienced premature wear in these shoes. The biggest negative is sugarcane soles are comfortable but too soft for athletic performance or hikes on rough terrain. You can opt for their performance shoes, Tree Dashers, but we prefer other athletic shoes for men.

Blundstone BL585

Best Travel Shoes Men
Pros
  • Iconic Style
  • Comfort
  • Durability
  • Easy Slip-On
  • Thick Rubber Soles
Cons
  • Not Technical
  • Lacks Ventilation

Finding a more versatile shoe than a Chelsea boot for cool weather is tough. Blundstones are my favorite boots; they’re easy to slip on and have great style. Not only can these boots work in a more formal or stylish event, but they’re equally at home on a ranch or going for a walk in the woods. They are timeless.

It’s the thick leather in a range of attractive finishes along with a durable stitch that provides the boots their versatility. That leather can also be treated with leather conditioning to achieve good weatherproofing. They are perfect for travel destinations with mixed climates or the in the winter.

Blundstones have great tread, insoles, and strong arch support, which makes them much more than stylish boots for men. An EVA footbed with special technology in the heels ensures all-day comfort. While a steel shank in the footbed supplies reliable support; however, it can trigger metal detectors in airport security.

The downside to the boots is a slightly polarizing fit. Blundstones work for most people, but some will struggle with the lack of adjustability. The dropdown heel and steel shank aren’t best for foot health. One last bit of advice, they come with double sole inserts to tailor fit. If they’re tight, remove the second insert.

Vivobarefoot Gobi III

Vivobarefoot Gobi III - Travel Shoes For Men
Pros
  • Style
  • Superb Packability
  • Foot Health Benefits
  • Leather Upper
  • Durability
Cons
  • Wide Toe Box Style
  • Barefoot Tech Is Polarizing

Many foot and joint issues plaguing modern-day humans are from overdesigned shoes. Most shoes cause our feet to move unnaturally, making our feet wither! VivoBarefoot is a company here to fix our troubled feet the natural way. These trendy shoes have made waves with health enthusiasts and minimalists obsessed with details.

The Gobi III lasts longer than traditional sneakers due to the build quality and lack of midsole. The leather upper style is an excellent men’s shoe in various environments. They lack a traditional sole and consume far less valuable room in a suitcase. The leather uppers and grippy soles make the shoes decent for short hikes and rugged terrain.

Additionally, they are great for people with wide feet who need more room in their shoes. It makes them a little goofy looking as the toe box is broad, thin, and flexible to promote the foot’s natural movement. It’s also worth stressing that barefoot shoes are not for everyone, and many men will not enjoy them.

It’s tough to beat these shoes as the leather uppers have a great casual look, and the lack of a sole makes them easy to stash in a bag. However, Leather shoes aren’t a great choice for hot weather destinations. I love to pack these for casual trips and pair them with athletic shoes.

Ecco Soft 7 Sneaker

Ecco Soft 7 Sneaker
Pros
  • High-Quality Leather Finish
  • Classic Style
  • Wide Color Selection
  • Durability
Cons
  • Casual Use Only

The Ecco Soft is a classic sneaker that makes an excellent travel shoe. It’s comfortable and stylish thanks to its high-quality leather upper. Ecco’s elegant look feels relaxed but mature enough to be worn by all ages. It’s a classic shoe that’s highly versatile and comfortable. The simple leather design makes the shoes look more appropriate for dressier occasions such as business environments, restaurants, and bars.

It’s tough to fault these shoes as the craftsmanship is better than most of the shoes on this list. The leather laces and thick soles ensure a pair of shoes with plenty of longevity for many future trips. The shoe insole is leather molded for reliable comfort and even breathability.

While the shoe is comfortable for walking all day, it is a heavier sneaker. It means they’re not suitable for athletics or hiking. We’d also venture to say men with foot health issues may want a shoe with better support and lighter weight.

Tropicfeel Canyon

Tropicfeel Canyon
Pros
  • Water Performance
  • Decent Style
  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight
  • Packable
Cons
  • Not Great In Cold Weather

Tropicfeel shoes bill themselves as the ultimate travel shoe. That’s a tall promise. However, they’ve demonstrated attractive shoes capable of handling many environments. They’re fantastic as shoes at coastal destinations as they’re essentially water shoes.

I’ve worn the Tropicfeel Canyon around cities and planes comfortably, as they look like relaxed sneakers. They don’t blur the lines like some sneakers, and you won’t wear them in business or formal occasions. The shoes excel at coastal destinations such as Bali, Hawaii, Greece, or even on a boat.

A reliable sole and comfortable upper make them work well for sightseeing or a quick workout in the hotel gym. I have done a light run in the shoes, but they lack the correct ergonomics for more serious runs and are too loose. That said, the elastic shoelace design allows you to tailor the fit of the uppers. The upper is lightweight and flexible enough to pack down in a suitcase. I enjoy the Tropicfeels, the main pair of shoes my father wears at home on the beach.

adidas Ultraboosts 22

Men's Black Adidas Ultraboost - Travel Shoes For Men
Pros
  • Excellent Urban Style
  • Huge Range Of Colorways
  • Super Comfortable
  • Maximalism Style
Cons
  • Not Technical Running Shoes

Adidas Ultraboosts make great travel shoes as they’re stylish sneakers and very comfortable. They hit the target between a sneaker and running shoe with enough tech to fit either environment. The sleek design with maximalist colorways is the highlight, and they look great on the feet. With a wide range of colorways and models, finding a design that fits your style is easy.

Avid runners or hikers will want to look elsewhere as the shoes are clunky and heavy. I find them better for gym wear and light runs at most — granted, we spend a fair amount of time clambering up mountain peaks. The Ultraboosts are a much better fit for most men and travelers.

Lems Primal 2

Lems Primal 2
Pros
  • Style
  • Superb Packability
  • Foot Health Benefits
  • Leather Upper
  • Durability
  • Value
Cons
  • Wide Toe Box Style
  • Barefoot Tech Is Polarizing

Like Vivobarefoot, Lems specializes in barefoot shoes to correct our problematic feet. These shoes have a period of “breaking in” about your feet, getting used to the sensation of being barefoot.

These trendy shoes have made waves with health enthusiasts and minimalists obsessed with details. The shoes last longer than traditional sneakers due to the build quality and lack of midsole. The most significant difference between these shoes and Vivobarefoot above is the use of vegan materials.

Lems also takes a more technical focus to shoes, with many offerings that revolve around outdoor sports. That shouldn’t be surprising as the company operates from Boulder, Colorado. The breathable uppers and grippy soles of the Primal 2s make the shoes decent for short hikes and rugged terrain.

As with barefoot shoes, they pack well in a suitcase and can easily be packed in carry-on luggage. That also means they easily accommodate men with wide feet as the toe-box is wide and flat. We suggest everyone tries out a barefoot at least once to see if they’ll fall in love.

Birkenstock Arizona

Birkenstock Arizona Best Travel Sandals
Pros
  • High-Quality Leather Finish
  • Durability
  • Conforming Midsole
  • Cork Materials
Cons
  • Outdoorsy Look

Birkenstocks are long associated with hippy culture and free-living ideology, so naturally, they make phenomenal sandals that provide support! However, Birkenstock Arizonas is much more than a name. The sandals feature patented cork footbeds that contour your feet, which provides outstanding arch support and comfort.

As a result, they reduce the impact on your knees and make walking more comfortable. I can spend all day walking in my Birkenstocks with little signs of fatigue in my feet. The ultra-comfy sandals have earned their reputation as a beloved sandal brand. Their following makes them a style statement in their own right. No one will laugh at a pair of Birkenstocks when worn in the appropriate setting.

The Arizona or Amalfi leather strap design is one of the best style options for men. Outside the beach, they look silly in destinations like Europe. However, attitudes are changing, and young men can get away with a lot. Of course, there are exceptions, and men can wear sandals anywhere in destinations like Hawaii or Bali.

Salomon Speedcross

Pros
  • Agressive Tread
  • Excellent Adventure Shoe
  • Comfort Of Speedlace System
  • Low Drop Height
  • Lightweight
Cons
  • Outdoor Style
  • Not Suited For Gym/Roads
  • Lack Versatility

Speedcross is not your classic travel shoe, but they’re an excellent adventure shoe that I often throw in my luggage. We love to trail run and scramble up craggy peaks, and it’s tough to do better than the Speedcross. It’s versatile, aggressive, lightweight, and comfortable, and the tread has incredible traction. A real go-anywhere-and-do-anything shoe that seems to excel in various locations.

We have several pairs of Speedcross and love them. They’ve built a stripped-down shoe that offers everything you need and nothing that you don’t. You don’t have to be a runner to benefit from the comfort and capabilities of these shoes. Especially on rough terrain, as their traction is excellent.

I’ve watched others slip and slide in muddy/icy trail conditions while I breeze by them. I’ll have the next pair in the closet before I wear out the first, and I don’t think I’m alone. The best shoes! They do have some significant downsides for travel. Speedcross looks like a trail running shoe and isn’t deceiving anyone. Also, their aggressive tread pattern makes them terrible for running on the road or working out in the gym.

Vans Classic Slip Ons

Vans Classic Slip On
Pros
  • Affordable
  • Easy On/Off
  • Low Profile
Cons
  • Lack Support
  • Younger Style

Vans’ Classic Slip-On blurs the line between sneakers and slip-on shoes and looks great with jeans or shorts. We love a pair of slip-on shoes when we want the comfort of a shoe but don’t want something as bulky as sneakers. They make airport security a breeze and take up minimal room in a suitcase, so they’re easy to pack.

The classic slip-on is super comfortable and can be worn with or without socks. However, they require a break-in period with socks as the back is made of leather, creating a tacky sensation that can cause blisters if you’re barefoot. The low profile style provides the shoes with some versatility and can work with many outfits and settings.

Most importantly, we love a pair of shoes for around $50, so you have more money for travel. Of course, they aren’t the best quality at that price point. The Vans Classic Slip-Ons lack the support and longevity of many other men’s travel shoes. We wouldn’t want to go for long walks every day exploring new cities with a pair of these shoes.

ON Cloud 5 Running Shoe

ON Cloud 5 Men's Travel Shoes
Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Very Comfortable
  • Great Cushion Underfoot
  • Excellent Performance
Cons
  • Running Sneaker Style
  • Chunky Outsole

The ON Cloud 5 sneakers are another excellent example of comfortable athletic shoes that make great travel shoes for men. It all comes down to their superb comfort and support. The shoes are ready for a long day of walking, adventures, or a workout in the hotel gym.

They achieve their comfort thanks to a supple polyester upper, which makes slipping them on and off easy at an airport. ON has its proprietary Zero-Gravity foam midsole, which provides exceptional comfort when exploring a new destination.

It’s very similar to the Clifton 9 above, which we love for its versatility in adventure activities while traveling. However, we slightly nod to Clifton as the Cloud 5 has a polarizing style. ON has a chunky proprietary rubber sole that is less sharp than many other sneaker options.

That’s not to say they’re anything but exceptionally comfortable shoes. We can give a slight nod in terms of comfort to their uppers for slipping on and off. These shoes feel great for anyone who prioritizes comfortable shoes over everything else.

OluKai Nohea

Olukai Nohea
Pros
  • Casual Style
  • Comfortable
  • Slip-On Style
  • Brand Ethos
Cons
  • Warm Weather Shoes
  • Narrow Fit

The OluKai Nohea is a highly comfortable pair of slip-on shoes ready to tackle the world. These Hawaiian exports embrace the laidback Aloha spirit, and the company strives to maintain a low environmental impact. We love these shoes because they’re lightweight, versatile, and comfortable. OluKai makes footbeds that anatomically fit your feet and offer superior support for slip-on shoes.

They have lovely ventilation and are adept at handling water, so they work for men who don’t want to wear sandals. The heel of the shoe also folds down for a more casual fit. Style is casual and versatile enough to work in various warm-weather destinations. Their mesh nature makes them ill-suited for cool climates or seasons. The fit is slightly narrow with OluKai shoes, which may present a problem for those with wide feet.

Chuck Taylor All-Star

Men's Converse All Star Sneakers - Travel Shoes For Men
Pros
  • Classic Sneaker
  • Comfortable
  • Cheap
  • Lightweight
Cons
  • Very Casual
  • Longevity

There is hardly a more classic sneaker than the Converse All-Star. They’re perfect for travel as they are lightweight, stylish, and comfortable. Plus, they have universal appeal as you can find them worldwide whether you’re exploring London or Beijing. These are a great call if you’re looking for that old-school look with a pair of jeans.

What’s excellent about Chucks is they’re affordable and reliable in their shoe fit. It’s just a great canvas shoe that has been around for decades. There are some drawbacks, such as longevity and lack of arch support. If you have custom insoles, you can always fix that, though. We travel with a pair and swap them in and out of shoes.

What to Consider When Buying Travel Shoes

Destination

Best Travel Shoes Men
Wearing Tropicfeels in Hong Kong / Some of the Most Comfortable Sneakers for Men

As you know, matching your shoe choice to your destination is crucial. You wouldn’t take a stylish pair of sandals to Iceland in the winter any more than a couple of clunky hiking boots for a trip to Paris. Your first step is, therefore, straightforward: do some research. Where are you going? What weather are you expecting: hot or cold, wet or dry?

Once you’ve sorted your destination, it’s time to consider what you plan to do. Are you looking to spend your trip pounding the pavement in a city as you visit the sights and local eateries? Or are you hoping to jump out to the mountain and get some intense trail runs and hikes under your belt?

Or maybe you’re right in the middle, with a healthy balance of city and nature. In any case, your activities will correlate directly with the performance of your travel shoes.

Performance

Hiking in Switzerland
Running in Salomon Speedcross in Zermatt

The high performance is the way to go. On the other hand, if you spend most of your time enjoying the city, you’ll probably spend more time thinking about design.

Design

Best Travel Shoes Men
In the Ecco Soft Sneaker in Canada / Best Travel Sneakers

Although a non-issue in most cases, design and appearance can play a huge role in travel situations. Most seasoned travelers, don’t want to be pegged as a tourist the moment they step off the plane.

If this concerns you, then take the time to consider what the locals are wearing and factor that into your decision-making process.

Avoid Waterproof Shoes

Waterproof shoes are one of the biggest gimmicks in men’s travel shoes. They’re rarely worth the additional cost and only work for limited water. Once the shoe is soaked, it dries slower than traditional shoes as the waterproof membrane traps the moisture. We suggest you avoid waterproof shoes for any footwear.

Cleaning

Travel in Costa Rica - Rio Celeste Waterfall
Hiking in the Hoka Speedgoat in Costa Rica / Best Travel Sneakers

Shoes get dirty, plain and simple. They will eventually get soiled no matter where we wear them or what we do. However, if you’re on a trip and have condensed your standard top three pairs of shoes down to one travel pair, your travel shoes will get dirty even faster.

Shoes that need a little brush down or the occasional rinse are preferred. Those that require a special cleaning agent get gouged easily or need in-depth preventative layers applied all the time and will be quick to rack up annoyance points.

How to Travel With Your Shoes

Best Travel Shoes Men - Faroe Islands
Getting Married in Blundstones in the Faroe Islands / Best Travel Shoes for Men

I always travel with shoes in a separate part of my luggage. I don’t want the dust and dirt from the street to get on my clothes. If I’m traveling in a suitcase, I will place my shoes in either a reusable bag or a packing cube and place the sole at the bottom of my luggage. My travel shoes never go next to my best outfits, just in case they get dirt everywhere. See more of our packing hacks here.

If I am on a backpacking trip, I will still wrap my shoes in a reusable bag and place them at the bottom of the backpack. If they are travel flip-flops or rugged tennis shoes, I will wrap them by their shoelaces outside the bag or on the side holders.

Allbirds Shoes Review: The MOST Comfortable Sneaker? https://theworldpursuit.com/allbirds-review/ https://theworldpursuit.com/allbirds-review/#comments Sat, 02 Dec 2023 01:27:00 +0000 https://theworldpursuit.com/?p=42447 It’s been several years since our first pair of wool Allbirds shoes, and the most comfortable shoes on earth have treated us well. It was so good that we figured it was time to write an Allbirds shoe review. Allbirds is a line of sustainable shoes that utilize various natural materials to create a more sustainable and comfortable shoe. Their classic shoe, the Wool Runner, has a wool upper and a midsole made from sugarcane-based EVA foam.

After years of use and a half dozen pairs, we figured it was time for an updated review of Allbirds. For this Allbirds review, we’ll stick to their signature Wool Runners and Tree Runners and touch on their growing line of shoes. We were in search of the perfect travel shoe. Instead, we found new daily shoes for casual wear. Allbirds shoes live up to the hype with few drawbacks and many positives.

An Honest Allbirds Shoes Review

Tasha Wearing Tree Runners in Downtown Wilmington NC

While Allbirds has a few physical stores, it is principally an e-commerce store that fulfills most orders online. We have ordered all of our Allbirds shoes directly from their website. The baseline price for Wool Runners and most of their line is a reasonable $110. Free shipping and a good return policy make ordering online with them a no-brainer.

All of our orders have been fulfilled fast and delivered in a short time. Our first order was their classic Allbirds Wool Runners. The construction of these Allbirds shoes is from a blend of recycled polyester (laces), sugarcane EVA foam (midsole), and merino wool (upper). The result is a more sustainable product.

Natasha Walks Down A Road In France In The Fall

For those after a more animal-friendly product, Allbirds shoes have the Tree Runner. This is a more breathable shoe better suited for warm weather. Its construction utilizes eucalyptus fiber to weave the upper fabric. However, the insole still uses a small amount of wool.

If you haven’t guessed already, they are big on sustainable products. They’ve come up with some innovative ideas to lessen their impact on the environment. The shoes use the two primary builds of tree and wool to offer a wide range of shoe styles. Shoppers can now choose running, sneaker, boat, slip-on, and high-top shoe styles.

First Impressions

Natasha Shoes Off A Pair Of Blue Allbirds Wool Runners

As soon as I pulled my new Allbirds sneakers out of the box (with no plastic packaging), I was impressed by both styles’ softness. The merino wool Wool Runners won by a hair over the Tree Runners. I also loved the sponginess of the soles straight away. It was like I’d bought slippers in runner form. I am not ashamed to say that’s my kind of shoe.

I also immediately noticed how light the shoes were. I can’t stand it when shoes bulk up my luggage, so both styles immediately got a big tick for travel. The style is great, and the simple shoe has no prominent patterns or logos. Allbirds Shoes set out to make a simple shoe that can go with various styles and has succeeded.

Style of Allbirds Shoes

Various Styles Of Allbirds Shoes On Their Website

The Allbirds site offers a range of sleek, neutral colors and fun colors like purple and pink. The primary color palette is gray, but Allbirds has expanded its range to include all sorts of amazing colors. I opted for blue in the Wool Runners and purple in the Tree Runners. Allbirds shoe colors regularly rotate, often offering limited-release colors for a unique look.

Are the Allbirds shoes sporty? Fashionable? Casual? A little from columns A, B, and C. Thanks to their neutrality, the shoe’s style is versatile. I love that they’re not covered in big logos and keep it simple. It’s the look of a classic shoe.

Pairing them with a nice travel outfit can look sharp, but they are very casual in nature. Their simplicity allows them to be worn comfortably in a more formal setting. They don’t feel out of place when worn with a blazer. The shoes feel as appropriate at a trendy bar as on the beach.

Comfort

Cameron in a pair of allbirds treerunners on Naxos

I laced up the Wool Runners and hit the pavement straight away. I immediately noticed they had a nice bounce, which is a good indicator of long-term comfort. We’ve spent a lot of time in various Allbirds sneakers and have traveled all over the world in the shoes. With all that time, we’ve never had discomfort while wearing the shoes.

They even offer decent arch support. My mother, who suffers from Plantar Fasciitis, reports that they are some of her most comfortable shoes. The main difference between the two shoes is the warmth. Wool provides more warmth, while the Tree Runner material is best for hot summer weather. Allbirds tend to be worn without socks, and their airy design keeps your feet cool and comfortable. If they do get dirty, there is nothing to worry about as they’re machine washable.

Cameron Walking In Pair Of Tree Runners

The shoes’ outsoles are very soft, which adds to their comfort. However, we are selective about where we wear them, as you can feel rough or uneven terrain underneath. They aren’t technical shoes ready to tackle hikes or a hard gym session. You could run for a bus in them, but not trail run. However, they do offer an athletic shoe called the Dashers.

Are they the comfiest shoes ever? That’s a little subjective. They are very comfortable. I can easily clock ten miles in them without blisters or pain, and even without sock-wearing, my feet don’t smell at the end of the day – unless it’s been crazy hot and humid out. They are soft, lightweight, and have good arch support. I recommend them based on comfort alone.

Sizing

Cameron In Tree Runners In Oman

Both Tree Runners and Wool Runners are true to size. It helps that the material is compliant, so it’d be tough for them to be too small. I am always thankful that I am not a half-size. It seems that hardly any brands make half sizes, including Allbirds. If you are a half size, try the smaller size, as it will likely stretch out. You should be fine, but you have 30 days to test and return them if they are not right.

Warm Weather Wear

Cameron In Tree Runners In Egyptian Ruin

I wear my Allbirds Tree Runners for warm-weather destinations like the Philippines and Thailand. They let my feet breathe without odor. Cameron wore his during our tour of Egypt in 100+ degree heat and felt as comfortable as possible in that kind of heat.

Cold Weather Wear

Natasha In Her Allbirds At Saint Malo In France

Both styles keep your feet cozy in cold/freezing weather, especially with a good pair of wooly socks. However, wool is always going to be slightly warmer than anything else. I wear my Wool Runners for winter travel.

This is important: Allbirds Wool Runners do not get along well with rain and snow. They are fine in a shower or drizzle, but avoid wearing them if you’re walking around in a downpour or a blizzard, as they will just get dirty and tire faster. They get pretty soppy, like wet clothes.

Odor and Washing

Natasha In Munich With Her Allbirds Tree Runners

After initially hesitating on wool shoes, I found that wool is odor-resistant. That said, if you wore them without socks daily, they’d eventually get smelly. I wore mine for a month in Greece and eventually had to throw them in the wash. The good thing is you can throw them in the washing machine. So convenient! Just make sure you’ve got the washer set to cold water. You can’t put them in the tumble dryer. However, you’ve gotta let these bad boys air dry.

It takes about 24 hours unless it’s warm and dry, and you can place them in the sun. Don’t plan long walks on washing day if you don’t have a backup pair of shoes. This is one of the reasons I love Allbirds shoes—the ability to consistently throw them in the wash and not have them ruined is terrific.

Durability

Natasha Walks Down Policeman's Creek Boardwalk In Canmore In Allbirds

Allbirds provide great value thanks to their durability and longevity. That said, they don’t last forever! My first pair made it about three years while rotating with other shoes and a lot of use while traveling. They held up very well, even after wearing them almost daily for an entire European summer.

However, similar to other reports, the toe box stretched out over time and formed a hole. This is due to the big toe stretching out the fabric. If you are a heavy user and wear your Allbirds daily for all activities, I’d say they will get you 1-2 years of awesome use. That’s pretty solid, in my opinion. They won’t fall apart on you. Just wear out like your old favorite t-shirt.

Tree Runners Vs. Wool Runners

The Wool Runners

Allbirds Wool Runners In Grey

Quick Specs | Price: $110  | Material: Merino Wool, Recycled Polyester, Sugarcane EVA Foam

When comparing shoes, it comes down to personal preference and how you’ll use them. If I’m honest, I didn’t have much of a preference. The two styles have more in common than they have differences. The Wool Runners and the Tree Runners have the same aesthetic design. They both keep things minimalistic, with neutral and pastel colors. They are equally comfortable.

The Tree Runners keep stinky feet at bay without socks a little better than the Wool Runners. On further investigation, Allbirds agree that the Tree Runners are better for hot weather. They are ever so slightly more breathable and light.

The Benefits Of Tree Runners
The Benefits Of Wool Runners

The main difference lies in the materials they’re made from. The Wool Runners are, as expected, made of premium merino wool – some of the best wool in the world. Meanwhile, the Tree Runners are made from Tencel, created from Eucalyptus trees. Try both pairs and cycle with the seasons if you can swing it. Or purchase the pair that fits the current season.

There’s also the wool vs. eucalyptus debate. Are you vegan? Or do you want to avoid wool for whatever reason? I bet you still want that incredible softness and comfort that wool runners bring. That’s why I’m sure you will be happy with the Tree Runners. Tencel is also a very cool technology.

Final Thoughts on Allbirds Shoes

Cameron In A Tomb In Egypt With Tree Runners

The runners have a beautiful minimalist design. They’re also incredibly comfortable, with pretty decent support. Sure, they’re not something you’d want to run or hike in, but they are great everyday shoes. They’re certainly up there with the best pairs of shoes I have taken on a trip. You’ll easily hit ten miles in these without a blister or stinging heels. To think of it, I’ve never gotten a blister with Allbirds shoes.

It’s inspiring to see a company that creates options for different lifestyles and preferences. I also like to see companies that are brave enough to experiment with new materials for footwear. For all their comfort and style, the best thing about Allbirds sneakers is their unshakeable commitment to sustainability.

They use 5% of the water and ⅓ of the land compared to other footwear manufacturers. They only source eucalyptus from plantations that abide by sustainable forestry standards. Their laces come from recycled plastic bottles; the packaging is made from 90% recycled cardboard. Amazon has tried to copy them at a fraction of the price, but we all know those are cheap knock-offs. With zero care about sourcing or sustainability.

Allbirds start at $110 (depending on style). At that price, with that level of ethics, you can feel good about buying yourself a pair of Allbirds. I wish more footwear companies were like Allbirds. I know I will see more great designs and shoes from this brand. Every time I check their site, I see new innovative products and different colors.

15 MOST Comfortable Flats For Women – Comfort Flats for 2024 https://theworldpursuit.com/comfortable-flats-for-women/ https://theworldpursuit.com/comfortable-flats-for-women/#respond Fri, 22 Sep 2023 04:24:00 +0000 https://theworldpursuit.com/?p=33000 A pair of comfortable flats for women is always great in a suitcase. They’re stylish and occupy minimal luggage space. My tip is to avoid heels when traveling, as many destinations worldwide have uneven streets, and you don’t want to break an ankle trying to look good. Comfortable flats for women were made for a reason!

Unlike heels, comfortable flats or loafers are a great option for a dress shoe that eats little room in your luggage. With comfort flats, you can find stylish shoes that allow you to blend in with trendy locals and are comfortable enough to wear all day.

Hush Puppies Chaste Ballet Flat

Comfortable Flats For Women Travel Hugh Puppies Brown Leather

MSRP: $80 | Material: Leather/Suede/Studded Fabric

The Chaste Ballet Flat is super cute and one of the most comfortable flats for women. Soft suede leather helps the shoe remain soft and flexible during construction. I’ve tried out a lot of flats, but these were some of my favorites in terms of comfort. They’re great because they pack down easily and can easily travel in your purse or handbag. What makes these shoes stand out for comfort is the soft suede leather that stretches and the footbed’s arch support.

Chaste Ballet Flat

Allbirds Tree Breezers

Allbirds Tree Breezers

MSRP: $98 | Material: Eucalyptus Knit & Sugarcane Outsole

For the most comfortable flats for women in our test, the casual and sustainable Allbirds Tree Breezers stand out. They’re tremendous for more casual occasions and pair wonderfully with summer dresses. Unlike leather flats on a hot summer day, these shoes keep your feet cool, thanks to the eucalyptus fiber knit in the upper construction. Not only do your feet reap the benefits of the knit, but so does the planet, as they are the most sustainable shoes on earth.

When it comes to sustainability, Allbirds nails it. They have done extensive research to track each shoe’s carbon footprint and offset its impact. In addition, they use natural materials instead of oil-based synthetic products.

Cole Haan Tali Bow Ballet

Walking Shoes Ballet Flats Black

MSRP: $150 | Material: Leather

Cole Haan’s ballet flats are small, comfortable, and easy to pack up, making them fabulous travel flats. What’s surprising about these flats is their comfort for such a simple shoe. They’re formal enough that you could get away wearing them to a wedding, opera, or any formal event. They form a wide variety of feet with supple leather, ensuring comfort.

As a short person, I also appreciate the very subtle wedge heel. These are made with leather and provide a synthetic sole. I love these flats for a night out in a new city. These flats are excellent quality, have great sizing, and are beautiful shoes. I love the bow they make for super cute walking shoes!

Tory Burch Georgia Flats

Tory Burch Georgia Flats

MSRP: $260 | Material: Leather

These super chic comfort flats from Tory Burch are a welcome pop of color. They’re stylish and offer decent comfort, but they’re far from the best on this list. We love them for their loafer style and excellent quality. I’m a massive fan of Tory Burch’s leather hues, which is a big plus.

Georgia Flats

Tory Burch Women’s Minnie Travel Ballet Flats

Tory Burch Women's Minnie Travel Ballet Flats

MSRP: $225 | Material: Leather

Tory Burch is well known for her more affordable line than most high-end fashion brands. The flats are comfortable and cute and are perfect for driving shoes, relaxed travel days, or casual wear. A wide-toe box means that those with wide feet should try these, as it can be challenging to find untroubled flats. These flats run true to size and only take a day or two to form to the foot.

I like the classic round toe with the Tory Burch charm on the top. Heel beds are slip-resistant and split in half so they can fold. The fold allows them to slip in luggage quickly or a bag, which is excellent for travel and last-minute occasions.

Tory Charm Ballet Flats

Massimo Matteo Penny Keeper

Massimo Matteo Penny Keeper Most Comfortable Flat Yellow

MSRP: $120 | Material: Nubuck Leather

A good pair of loafers or moccasins is great for comfort and a more casual formal shoe. These affordable women’s loafers come in many color choices that I love. The leather is soft right out of the box, and they take minimal time to break in, so you’re safe to buy them right before your next trip. You can wear them right out of the box without any socks or slips without the risk of a blister.

The Massimo Matteo Penny Keepers are leather with leather lining and slightly cushioned footbeds. They are very comfortable, but the slight cushion is not great for all-day wear. They work better as a friendly evening shoe or an easy travel day where you’d like to look cute.

Born Julianne

Best Womens Walking Shoes Comfortable Flats Brown

MSRP: $90 | Material: Leather

Finding a comfortable pair of flats can sometimes seem like a mission. I’ve always had a problem with flats since I have a bunion, but then I found these shoes. They’re super comfortable, and I would feel comfortable in them for hours of standing. Due to their excellent arch support, they’re great flats for women with plantar fasciitis.

Born Flats

SoftWalk Sonoma

SoftWalk Sonoma Most Comfortable Flats For Women Travel Beige

MSRP: $60 | Material: Leather

These have comfort in their name and are a great pair of stylish and comfortable flats for women. They use firm leather on the exterior and have a rounded toe. The removable footbed lined with fabric is comfy, or you can insert a custom insole for arch support. The sole is made of tough rubber that makes it slip-resistant and quiet. Altogether, these may be the most comfortable flats for women on this list, with many strong contenders.

Softwalk Sonoma Flats

Sam Edelman Loraine Flat Loafers

Most Comfortable Flat For Travel

MSRP: $150 | Material: Leather

The Loraine is a classic loafer that looks sharp. The soft leather conforms well to your feet. They have slight heels, which I always appreciate when wearing dress shoes. With an excellent selection of colors, you can mix and match them with several outfit choices and seasons.

I went with a smaller half-size than usual, but everyone has different feet. What surprises me the most about these loafers is how casual they can look since they are soft leather with lovely pastel colors and a wide range of fabric choices.

Loraine Flats

Vionic Minna Flat

VIONIC Minna Womens Comfortable Flats

MSRP: $119 | Material: Leather

These flats are super cute and my favorite fashionable shoes in my travel wardrobe. What’s most important about these shoes and why they are so great for travel is their tremendous support for your feet. They’re beautiful shoes, and it’s tough to find anything similar for the price.

My only complaint is that they’re a little narrow, so they might be a little tight if you have bunion or wide feet. They’re made from leather or suede and feature a bow that holds up well over time. Minna Flats still slip on and off easily with a firm back, which is helpful. I like the light colors but don’t hold up against dirt and grime.

Minna Flat

Naturalizer Flexy Ballet Flat

Naturalizer Brittany Comfortable Flat For Women

MSRP: $49 | Material: Leather

Naturalizer’s Flexy Ballet flat is similar in style to the SoftWalks listed above. However, it’s about half the price. These shoes tend to run a little narrow, so those with wide feet should look elsewhere. The sole is made of tough rubber, which makes it slip-resistant and quiet. The Flexy flat offers a medium amount of support.

Naturalizer Flexy Ballet Flat

Sketchers Cleo Flats

Comfortable Flats For Women Sketchers Cleo

MSRP: $50 | Material: Flat Knit

Sketchers may not be known for their style, and these comfortable flats live up to that name. Cleos are still not a bad-looking pair of flats, and like many Sketchers shoes, they are incredibly comfortable. A wide toe box and good arch support make them a tremendous flat for women with wide feet. They slip on pretty quickly, and the slight heel gives enough support. Oh, and the breathable fabric allows them to keep you cool in the summer.

Cleo Flats

Lucky Brand Emmie

Lucky Brand Emmie Comfortable Flat

MSRP: $60 | Material: Leather

Suppose you’re in the market for a comfortable pair of affordable flats to carry in your purse, then the Emmie is a winner. They form a wide variety of feet with supple leather, ensuring comfort. The wide elastic top band keeps the flats secure on your feet.

Lucky Brand Emmie

Steve Madden Feather Loafer Flat

Steve Madden Feather Loafer Comfortable Flat For Women

MSRP: $79 | Material: Leather

These super cute flats from Steve Madden use firm or suede leather on the exterior and have a pointed toe. These flats run narrow, so those with wide feet should look elsewhere. On the sole is a tough rubber that makes them slip-resistant and quiet. The Steve Madden Feather Loafers are a stylish flat offering decent comfort but far from the best on this list.

Clarks Ayla Low

Clarks Ayla Low Comfortable Flats

MSRP: $79 | Material: Synthetic

Clarks make a decent-looking, comfortable flat for very casual occasions. Its large sole provides great support, and its wide toe box and good arch support make it a tremendous flat for women with wide feet. The Ayla Low is a great choice if you need a robust flat that you can walk around in daily. The stand-out feature for me is the outer soles, which offer much more protection and support than any other flat on this list. If you have events outside, these would be a good call.

How to Travel With Your Shoes?

Tasha On The Island of Hydra

I always travel with shoes in a separate part of my luggage. I don’t want the dust and dirt from the street to get on my clothes. If I’m traveling in a suitcase, I will place my shoes in either a reusable bag or a packing cube and place the soles at the bottom. My travel shoes never go next to my best outfits, just in case they do happen to get dirt everywhere. See more of our packing hacks here.

If I am on an adventure, I will wrap my shoes in a reusable bag and place them at the bottom of the backpack or duffel bag. If they are travel flip-flops or rugged tennis shoes, I will either wrap them by their shoelaces on the outside of the bag or place them in the side holds. Just watch out for theft if you leave your suitcase unattended.

What Shoes Do I Pack for Travel?

At least three pairs of shoes are in my bag, but it all depends on the season and destination.

  • Athletic Shoes: I wear athletic shoes for working out, hiking, and walking around all day. That may be a pair of running shoes or hiking boots, but I always like to be prepared to get active. It all depends on the destination.
  • Sandals: I almost always have a pair of sandals in my bag. Sandals are key for dirty showers, walking outside your room for a few minutes, island travel, or beach time.
  • Cute, Comfortable Flats for Women or Loafers: This is key as I can always look appropriate for any last-minute formal plans. Surprise event or romantic dinner? Not a problem!

Vessi vs Allbirds: Which Shoes Are Right For You? https://theworldpursuit.com/vessi-vs-allbirds/ Fri, 01 Sep 2023 10:42:00 +0000 https://theworldpursuit.com/?p=66667 As editors around travel gear, we’ve benefited from trying out many “travel” shoes, and Alllbirds have always stood out. However, Vessi is the latest shoe to catch our eye and test around our home in British Columbia.

Two new shoe brands are making waves, and that’s Vessi and Allbirds. If you’re after a new pair of shoes to keep your feet warm and dry, you’ve likely come across one of these two shoe brands. They’re a perfect travel, every day, or rainy day shoe.

If you’re after a stylish shoe that can handle the worst of rainy weather, you’ve come to the right spot. All Vessi shoes are 100% waterproof yet remain breathable, soft, and comfortable. The Allbirds Mizzles may only be water-resistant, but they are uber comfortable and one of the most sustainable shoes on the market.

Vessi vs Allbirds

Left (Vessi) Right (Allbirds)

For the comparison, we’ll stick to Allbirds’ “Mizzle” line of shoes as those are water-resistant and most comparable to the Vessi line. Of course, it helps the company is only a two-hour drive away in Vancouver. These shoes feel like ideal for the Pacific Northwest as they are a 100% waterproof knit sneaker – and there are plenty of rain and muddy days in the PNW! That said, we’re big fans of Allbirds and have been wearing and traveling in their shoes for the last four years.

About Vessi

Things to do in Vancouver

Vessi is the latest trendsetting shoe brand based in Vancouver. Mikaella Go, Tony Yu, and Andy Wang set out to make the perfect shoe for their local climate that’s well known for its wet weather. The result is a minimalist shoe that is fully waterproof.

It’s a new shoe brand launched in 2018 on Kickstarter and has since expanded its line to include six models and two kids’ shoes. The brand has gained a cult following for its comfy waterproof shoes that are excellent for travel.

About Allbirds

Allbirds are the darling sustainable footwear brand from San Francisco. The brand launched in 2014 and quickly changed the shoe market with its minimalistic look and sustainable cred. Allbirds original wool runner uses merino wool and an EVA sugarcane foam.

It’s now a classic accessory, and just about every trendsetter, including former President Obama, has worn a pair. The founders, Tim Brown & Joey Zwillinger, wanted a simple shoe that was comfortable and breathable.

Side By Side Details

Playing in the snow in Vessis and the summer in Allbirds

Style

We choose two popular styles from both brands that are comparable. First, we’ll start with the Vessi Weekend and the Allbirds Wool Runner. They both keep it pretty simple with minimal branding and a small logo on the heel of both shoes.

The Vessi Weekend has a classic sneaker style and a wider toe box. In contrast, Allbirds Wool Runner is much more simplistic with a tighter and softer toe box. The material used is one of the most significant differences between the two shoe brands. Since the material is softer with Allbirds, it’s common to see a “toe-hump” as your big toe pushes out the toe box.

The other two shoes we pulled from the lines are the Vessi Everyday Move and Allbirds Wool Dashers. Everyday Move shoes are a nice blend of athletic and casual sneakers. They’re perfect for errands and daily life.

While the Wool Dashers have the typical minimalist style, they add a wide platform for running shoes. Wool Dashers are a tough fit for me as they aren’t quite robust enough to keep up with my running demands but aren’t casual sufficient to feel suitable for regular life. However, for light workouts, they could work for the right person.

Material

Waterproof Vessis

Vessi’s utilize a patented material called Dyma-tex. The result is 100% waterproof material that is both comfortable and breathable. It’s a little thicker than the Allbirds wool knit and feels more durable. It is breathable but can’t quite keep up with the superior performance of wool as it wicks away moisture.

Unlike other waterproof materials, Vessi doesn’t just use a coating or spray. One of the coolest things about Vessi shoes is their patented Dyma-Tex technology. While other options may use any coatings or sprays to make their shoes waterproof. This means that they’ll stay waterproof forever without any effort on your end.

The wool material that Allbirds utilizes is very comfortable. It’s easy to see why they suggest you wear them sock-free. As it is a wool upper, the Mizzles use a Bio-based shield to provide water resistance. It also offers a bit less protection, and you can often see your feet pushing against the soft fabric.

Sustainability

Summer in Allbirds

Vessi shoes can not claim the same sustainable street cred as Allbirds, but they have some strengths. First, they are vegan shoes and do not utilize animal products; obviously, “wool” runners and “wool” dashers are not vegan.

The innovative and straightforward material design allows for a reduced carbon footprint. The manufacturing process is streamlined to the point that they utilize 99% of their material product, which saves huge amounts of waste compared to standard manufacturing processes.

The material also does not need to utilize any chemical coatings for waterproofing. The result is a lifetime waterproof guarantee. The company is also involved in community projects and uses recycled packaging. Neither shoe brand utilizes harmful PFAs that popular brands use in their waterproof materials.

When it comes to sustainability, Allbirds, nail it. They have done an extensive research to track the carbon footprint of each shoe and offset its impact. Then on top of that, they use natural materials instead of oil-based synthetic materials. It includes the wool uppers and EVA sugarcane foam soles in the mizzles.

While they are not vegan, Allbirds line utilizes a wide range of sustainable sources to design their products. It’s easy to see why the company is a certified B-Corporation and strives for high ethical and environmental production standards.

Performance

Vessis are completely waterproof!

If we’re looking at this purely from a waterproofing perspective, then it’s not a competition. Vessi shoes are a 100% waterproof travel shoe, while Allbirds are water-resistant, thanks to a natural water-resistant coating.

The grip on the soles of both shoes is slip-resistant. However, the Wool Dashers Runners do not grip well on slick surfaces. Vessi sneakers have a specialized grip in the heel and toe, which is impressive at grabbing ice, snow, and water. The additional grip is in the Allbird Wool Dashers, but it’s the only shoe in their line that utilizes the feature.

As we just got our Vessi shoes this year, I can’t comment yet on the shoe’s longevity with Vessi, but they do appear to be well made. At the same time, the Allbirds we own have held up very well with extended trips, where we’ll walk for several miles each day, and have been doing so through our last four years of travel with them.

Wear & Feel

Wearing Vessis in the winter

The uppers of both shoes fit like a sock and move with the foot. Once you get your shoelaces correct, you’ll never need to tie the shoes. Vessi shoes are built more like a slip-on with an elastic cuff that grips the ankle. It provides better protection against the elements but could cause chafing, so we like to wear socks.

Allbirds Shoes Review
Wearing Allbirds in Europe

The soles of both shoes are very comfortable, with plenty of soft cushion underfoot. Allbirds soles are softer, making a lighter shoe, but it means you feel rough surfaces more underfoot.

The insoles of Vessi offer better support for the arch, but I wouldn’t consider either shoe great for those suffering from severe Plantar Fascitis. Though both brands offer removable insoles, people who wear orthotics can also benefit from these shoes.

While Allbirds certainly come with a few pitfalls since it is a soft shoe made with a wool upper, there is clear positive. They are very comfortable, almost like putting on a pair of wool socks, and we both typically wear Allbirds without any socks.

Pricing

A morning with our Vessi shoes in the PNW

The two shoe companies are comparable in pricing. The Vessi Weekend Sneaker costs $130 ($165 CAD) , and the Vessi Everday Move Sneaker costs $125 ($155 CAD). The Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzles cost $135, and the Runner Up Mizzles cost $138.

While the Vessi shoes do cost more on average, their frequent sales often bring the price down to the Allbirds, if not cheaper. Due to customs, Canadian customers will find the Allbirds more expensive by a few dollars. While Canadian consumers ordering Vessis (a Canadian company), will not find the price change as drastic.

Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzles$125 ($170 CAD)
Vessi Weekend Sneaker$130 ($165 CAD)
Allbirds Wool Dasher Mizzles$145 ($195 CAD)
Vessi Everyday Move Sneaker$125 ($155 CAD)

Returns & Exchanges

Love wearing our Vessi shoes together!

The return and exchange policy of both companies varies by conditions and location. So please double-check how the policy applies to you before ordering.

Vessi

  • Allows for a 90-day return or exchange policy period. This applies to new and never worn outside sneakers with original packaging, and is free within North America.
  • Free shipping within North America (on orders over $80 before taxes and after discounts).
  • They have a 365 day warranty that covers manufacturing defects.

Allbirds

  • Free 30-day return or exchange policy to make a decision for shoes.
  • Their clothing line must include tags and undergarmets are required to be in original packaging.

Final Thoughts

Feet are dry with Vessis!

Quite honestly, we love both shoes! They’re both tremendous and both have their strengths and weaknesses. We may give a slight nudge to Vessi in this comparison in terms of vegan waterproof and water-resistant shoes. Vessi tends to have more fashion-forward designs with reliable comfort. The performance of the Vessi shoes in wet conditions is better with good grip and total waterproofing.

Allbirds tend to be a bit more comfortable due to the soft material. We also love the company’s sustainable ethos, and they have plenty of different styles and fun colors to choose from online. We often find that we can always find a shoe in any color we want! We’ve brought them on many trips and find that they are easy to throw in the washer and wash completely when we get home. Throughout the process, they hold up very well.

Enjoying the fall in purple Allbirds

We love the Vessi shoes, and it shouldn’t be much of a surprise they’ve gained a cult following. The shoes are super comfortable, provide reliable performance, and look great for travel. There is a good chance we’ll be packing them for our next trip.

The performance and comfort of the two styles from Vessi we tried out were very similar. We spent a whole day in them and have been wearing them around town for everyday errands for a few weeks. I would recommend whatever model fits your personal style best.

These jackets are fantastic for travel and daily life, but most importantly, they are light enough to throw in your luggage, backpack, or handbag. We spend half of our year traveling for work and testing new gear. On any trip, we always pack protection for when the weather takes a turn for the worst.

We like a jacket that keeps the sun off your shoulders during the day, warm in the evening, comfortable against the skin, and dry in the rain. Oh yeah, and be light and packable enough that you barely notice it in your carry-on or purse.

There is likely no one jacket to do it all. However, with a few versatile choices, any woman can have a jacket to match any climate or condition. Many of the best lightweight jackets for women will meet all these specifications and more, depending on your travel climate.

Beta AR Jacket in The Mountains
Lightweight Jacket For Women

Arc’teryx Beta LT Gore-Tex Jacket

Arc'teryx Beta LT Gore-Tex Jacket - Lightweight Women's Jackets
Product Details

MSRP: $450 | Weight: 13.9 oz. | Material: 3-layer GORE-TEX | Style: Hiking/Mountaineering

Pros
  • Premium Quality Product
  • Exceptional Protection
  • Lightweight
  • Outdoor Style
Cons
  • Athletic Cut
  • Lacks Versatility Due To Outdoor Style
  • Expensive

The Arc’teryx Beta LT is our favorite outdoor adventure jacket, as it provides awesome protection from the elements. Arc’teryx is a brand beloved by the mountaineering and climbing community as they know how to make a robust shell jacket. The Beta uses 3L GORE-TEX® fabric and a bombproof build that will keep you dry and comfortable no matter the weather.

It comes with a lot of great features for protection against the elements. The downside of the jacket is that it’s very expensive. If you’re occasionally active outdoors, you likely don’t need the exceptional protection of the jacket. It also looks like an outdoor jacket and feels ill-suited for more casual environments.

The fit is also slim, so it’s best suited for an athletic body type. However, those who love to spend their time outdoors will be hard-pressed to find a better jacket than the Arc’teryx Beta LT Jacket.

Barbour Beadnell Jacket

Barbour Beadnell Jacket - Lightweight Women's Jackets
Product Details

MSRP: $385 | Weight: N/A | Material: Waxed Canvas | Style: Casual Outdoor Jacket

Pros
  • Classic Style
  • Performance
  • Great Feminine Fit
  • Superb Quality
  • Excellent Pockets
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Warm For Hot Climates

The Classic Beadnell jacket by Barbour is the one you’ll reach for every season of the year. Its waxed cotton exterior looks gorgeous and highly functional as it supplies wind and water resistance.

A cozy tartan lining is soft against the skin and supplies warmth in cool climates. It provides a lot of versatility as the jacket works for a wide range of destinations and daily life. We could wear this jacket in Scotland or the Masai Mara. The jacket is also highly functional with two snap button bellow pockets, handwarmer pockets, and one interior breast pocket.

We appreciate the women’s fit that keeps an excellent shape that is done with front and back panels. The one downside is it’s too warm for hot destinations, but it is ready to tackle any cool weather. It’s an expensive jacket, but we feel it’s a worthy investment that will last a lifetime.

Columbia Pardon My Trench

Best Packable Rain Jacket Columbia Pardon My Trench - Lightweight Women's Jackets
Product Details

MSRP: $110 | Weight: 13.6 oz. | Material: Nylon – Omni-Shield™ | Style: Casual Performance

Pros
  • Casual Style
  • Weatherproof
  • Lightweight
  • Colors
  • Affordable
Cons
  • Not Technical
  • Not Waterproof
  • Quality

The Columbia Pardon My Trench is a versatile jacket that’s one of our favorite lightweight jackets for women with a hood. Combine that with water-resistant fabric, and you’re left with a rain jacket that boasts double the awesome. Plus, with all the added features this jacket can offer, surprise rainfall is no big deal. Some of the features included make this option a no-brainer for our list of the best lightweight travel jackets.

Two-way zip with a panel protects the zipper from the elements. Princess seams run down the front and back of the jacket for a slim fit that looks as good as it feels. You can easily remove and stow the hood away for windier, rain-free days. The jacket also comes in a wide variety of colors, like red and yellow.

Pitfalls of the jacket are typical for Columbia products. It’s sold for a great price, but the jacket is a little lackluster in performance. Rain will soak through the fabric in heavy rainfall or prolonged exposure. Also, the finishing details, such as the cuffs, material, and zipper, all feel a bit cheap. You get what you pay for, and this jacket is cheap. Overall, it’s a well-rounded jacket for travel!

Columbia Pardon My Trench Jacket

Arc’teryx Atom Hoody

Arc’teryx Atom Hoody - Lightweight Women's Jackets
Product Details

MSRP: $300 | Weight: 11.1 oz | Material: Nylon | Style: Insulated Jacket

Pros
  • Comfort
  • Relaxed Fit
  • Weatherproof
  • Warm
  • Lightweight
Cons
  • Ventilation
  • Waterproofing
  • Light Insulation

Arc’teryx makes some phenomenal outdoor jackets; their best-selling jacket is the Atom Hoody. The tremendously lightweight and warm mid-layer jacket is beloved for a reason. It’s super comfortable and warm but offers a lot of performance. We’ve used our Atoms to scramble up peaks in the summer, ski tour in the winter, explore new city streets, and relax around the house.

We’re not alone, as it’s a beloved jacket by the outdoor community. Arc’teryx has taken the stance that if it’s not broken, don’t fix it, and the jacket has remained the same for years.

It’s not a great alternative to a winter parka or shell jacket.

MSRP: $198 | Material: Nylon – RepellShell | Style: Athleisure Running Jacket

Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable

  • Excellent Quality
Cons
  • Running Jacket
  • Slim Fit Not For Everyone

It uses an excellent lightweight fabric that works well in mild weather and provides adequate protection. We find the material provides a nice balance of comfort and durability. The jacket fits across the body wonderfully. It features an adjustable hood, hidden phone pocket, zippered exterior pockets, reflective details, and thumb holes on the sleeves.

It comes in several attractive colors, including black, bone, creamy mint, and white, to suit different styles and preferences. For a more casual style, it feels like a tremendously versatile jacket. We love this athleisure jacket as it blends comfort, performance, and style. Complaining about a great jacket like this in your wardrobe is tough.

Patagonia Down Sweater

Patagonia Down Sweater - Lightweight Women's Jackets
Product Details

MSRP: $279 | Weight: 13.1 oz | Material: Nylon | Style: Down Jacket

Pros
  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable
  • Eco-Friendly
Cons
  • Not Waterproof
  • No Hood
  • Some Reports Of Odd Sizing

The Patagonia Down Sweater has a comfortable design and is well-suited for city wear and weekend trips, making it one of the best lightweight jackets for women. In addition to being a great down jacket, the shell is 100% recycled polyester, and the 800-fill-power goose down is traceable. What stands out about the Down Sweater is its versatility and price.

It’s been Patagonia’s best-selling product for years because it feels equally at home in the mountains and city while not breaking the bank. It’s an easy pick for a down jacket, and we love the color choices. It was the first jacket I bought for a backpacking trip around the world in my early twenties. Over a decade later, the jacket still hangs in our closet. It is a classic down jacket that has won over many women.

Patagonia Down Sweater

Orvis Pack-And-Go Travel Jacket

Orvis Pack-And-Go Travel Jacket - Lightweight Women's Jackets
Product Details

MSRP: $169 | Weight: N/A | Material: Polyester | Style: Jacket

Pros
  • Stylish,
  • Long Cut
  • Stuff Sack
  • Stowaway Hood
Cons
  • Polyester
  • Not Waterproof

The Orvis Pack and Go is an excellent choice if you’re looking for something less outdoorsy and packed with style. This adorable mid-thigh women’s travel jacket is wind and water-resistant, has a stowaway hood, and loads of space and hidden pockets.

The fit is complimenting, cinching at the waist, and the colors are pretty muted, making this jacket the perfect pairing to almost any outfit! The polyester blend also resists wrinkling, which is excellent because it comes with its stuff sack so that you can pack and go.

A large downside for us is the use of polyester. It’s a cheaper material and one of the best ways to distinguish high-end vs. more affordable options. Polyester has a lower fail rate, is easier to snag, and requires a weather-resistant coating to remain water-resistant, which breaks down over time. We love this jacket as a casual go-to but don’t expect reliable protection from the elements.

Helly Hansen W Kirkwall II Raincoat

Helly Hansen W Kirkwall II Raincoat - Lightweight Women's Jackets
Product Details

MSRP: $125 | Weight: 30 oz | Material: Polyurethane | Style: Rain Jacket

Pros
  • Stylish
  • Comfort
  • Fully Waterproof
  • Value
Cons
  • Heavy

The Helly Hansen W Kirkwall II Raincoat is a classic raincoat with tremendous water protection. In addition to its stylish look, the jacket is very comfortable, with a soft lining and cut that moves with the body. The cut on the jacket is flattering, with a long thigh hem and a slim waist. There are a variety of color choices, but it’s hard to do much better than the classic yellow.

A heavy polyurethane is used in the construction of the jacket, which lends well to the performance and appearance of the jacket. It’s not an understatement to say you’d stay dry if a wave crashed over your head — the jacket is fully waterproof.

We love the coat for those who plan to travel around wet weather destinations like the British Isles, Iceland, or the Pacific Northwest, where rain feels inevitable. The modern take on a fisherman’s jacket feels right at home along the coast as it’s equally practical, stylish, and recognizable. The best part is the jacket doesn’t fit like an old unisex rubber smock or coat. Plus, the coat offers a decent value for the quality delivered and looks great in photos!

Product Details

MSRP: $149 | Weight: 22.5 oz | Material: Polyester Fleece | Style: Athletic Casual Fleece

I’ve had my Better Sweater for seven years and has seen plenty of use. The Better Sweater comes in a 1/4 zip pullover or a full zip-up jacket.

Pros
  • Style
  • Plethora Of Pockets
  • Organic Cotton
  • Stretch
  • Boxy Cut
Cons
  • Work Wear Look

We love the prAna Sancho Jacket as it’s lovely and super comfortable. It has a great organic cotton material and fits the body well. It achieves its excellent shape with a slightly boxy cut and an internal waist draw cord.

The roomy cut also means it’s easy to add a layer under the jacket to stay warm. It’s a lightweight jacket for women with little insulation. Cool-weather feels perfect with this jacket, which can still add a touch of style in warmer weather.

It feels like an essential jacket as the rugged style is perfect in the outdoors or city. However, it’s not all rugged, as the touch of elastane gives the jacket excellent stretch and performance. We love the practicality of the two interior pockets and four exterior pockets.

Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Weatherproof
  • Decent Quality
  • Great Features
Cons
  • Lacks Key Features
  • Waterproofing Not Industry Best

We recommend a lot of REI products because they have yet to let us down. Their Rainier Rain Jacket is a fantastic offering for those seeking a technical jacket that doesn’t break the bank. However, with this jacket, you’re getting tremendous value from a waterproof/weatherproof shell jacket.

The jacket shell is durable and holds up well against the elements, while the interior remains soft and dry.

Most importantly, this lightweight jacket can easily roll into the hood for travel days or riding in your daypack. It’s an awesome lightweight jacket for women with plenty of color choices.

Tips For A Women’s Lightweight Jacket

Style of Lightweight Jacket

light jackets for women
Light Jackets for Women

Style is always an issue when it comes to lightweight jackets for women, particularly those made for wetter climates.

We never advise wearing cotton in cold or wet weather environments.

old or wet weather environments

Water Resistance

travel the faroe islands

If you’ve ever been caught in an unexpected downpour while traveling, you know what a dampener it can put on the rest of your day. So, finding a travel jacket with some water resistance is a biggy.

Nylon and polyester jackets are great for this. They have natural moisture-wicking abilities and usually come with a waterproof coating that keeps the rain from getting through. Cotton, on the other hand, while comfortable, is awful in this scenario. This material gets soggy and misshapen and can take hours to dry, leaving you cranky and miserable for the rest of the day.

Wrinkle Resistance

Packing for travel

When traveling in the summer or dry, summer-like climates, chances are your jacket will spend most of its time stuffed into your bag or thrown in your suitcase.

Like Merino wool, it maintains its shape and is extremely comfortable. It’s also one of the easiest fabrics to find, which is a bonus! Again, you want to stay away from cotton here, as well as ultra-thin nylon.

Breathability

light jackets for women
One of my favorite women’s lightweight jackets is the Arc’teryx Atom! (pictured)

Even when faced with the coldest climates, you still want a women’s travel jacket that gives you some form of breathability. Without it, you’ll likely get sweaty and sticky underneath, and that’s never comfortable.

Packability

Lightweight jackets for women pack up small and tight

While traveling, it’s a no-brainer to bring clothing that can squish down to a reasonable size. All the more room for those knick-knacks and souvenirs you will pick up along the way! So, finding a minimalistic women’s travel jacket when packed down is significant, and there are a few ways that lightweight travel jackets achieve this.

Pockets

In the Helly Hansen Odin

Pockets are a great addition to everyday wear, but they become almost a dealbreaker when it comes to lightweight travel jackets. These handy inventions keep you from having to lug a heavy bag everywhere you go to take your credit cards, cash, and passport. Even in a chilly airport, having a jacket with plenty of front pockets will allow you to quickly access your tickets and identification without having to scrounge through your suitcase.

Many lightweight travel jackets will even come with RFID internal chest pockets, where you know your passport will be safe. Also, having hip pockets is a great way to warm up your hands on those chilly days when you don’t want to carry around gloves.

Ability to Layer

I’m always layering my Arc’teryx Cerium!

Another great characteristic that the best women’s lightweight travel jackets have to offer is the ability to layer. If the jacket is too bulky or form-fitting, you will lose the ability to layer sweaters underneath or a vest overtop.

This is especially important in those fast-changing climates where you need to be extra prepared for weather shifts! You will want to look for slightly loose jackets while being thin enough to throw extra layers on top of them. We recommend wearing bulky clothes and bringing an extra jacket when you try jackets on.

Extra Features

light jackets for women

As with all travel gear, lightweight travel jackets can be simple or come loaded with features. What features you want will be based entirely on personal preference, but here are a few to look for.

  1. Zip-out liners: These are great when you’re in a climate that changes drastically throughout the day. The liner is generally made from a material like fleece and gives you an extra layer of warmth when the weather takes a turn for the worst.
  2. Stowable/removable hood: This is an excellent feature in rainy areas. It will allow you the sleek look of a no-hood jacket while also covering your hair and face when the sprinkles start to fall.
  3. Waist drawstring: This feature is exceptionally helpful for windy environments. The drawstring allows you to pull the bottom of the jacket tight into your waist to prevent drafts.
  4. Waterproofing: it is essential to note that waterproofing and water resistance are very different. Water-resistant jackets perform fine under light showers, but a waterproof jacket will be a better option when traveling to wet climates. This is usually an external treatment that will be added to the label.

Unbound Merino Review: Testing Out A Wool Wardrobe For Travel https://theworldpursuit.com/unbound-merino-review/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 17:59:50 +0000 https://theworldpursuit.com/?p=82265 Unbound Merino makes some of the best travel clothing on the market that easily blends into daily life. We’ve been wearing the company’s clothes for travel over the last two years, and I’ve had some time to get to know their products.

I only travel with a carry-on suitcase, no matter the trip or duration. With checked luggage, I find things become redundant and unnecessary. The secret to this success stems from the fact I pack clothes that can be worn multiple times without a wash. Wool clothing is exceptional in its ability to resist bacteria and odor.

Unbound Merino Wool Clothing Review

Why Merino Wool Clothing?

Merino Sheep

We’re big fans of natural fibers when it comes to health and environmental impacts. Merino wool is a natural fiber from the fleece of Merino sheep from New Zealand and Australia. It’s prized for its fine, dense fibers that produce excellent fabrics.

The result is a fabric that outperforms almost all other natural fibers yet remains soft to the touch. Ditch the old idea of scratchy wool sweaters, as wool is a performance fabric well suited for clothing. Merino wool products can keep you cool in hot weather but warm in cold weather.

Lac Blanc In Chamonix

Merino wool is naturally antimicrobial, so the clothing from the wool stays fresh longer. This is a big deal for travelers, backcountry adventurers, and environmentally conscious consumers, as wool clothing requires less washing.

We love Merino wool clothing for travel as it allows us to pack less in our bags and wear clothing multiple times without needing a wash. Previously, many wool clothing was produced by outdoor brands with hikers in mind. However, with a brand like Unbound Merino, they produce clothing that carries traditional casual styles perfect for daily life.

Unbound Merino has its roots in travel. The founders are three lifelong friends who loved wool clothing on long road trips but found it lacking. They set out to produce a line of casual clothing that looked great but had all the performance benefits of wool. As a traveler entering my thirties and wanting to look more professional, I’m their target customer.

Unbound Merino Wool Travel Pants Label

Wool clothing has come to dominate my wardrobe slowly; a large part is due to Unbound Merino. They started with a limited line of men’s casual wool clothing, and their line has evolved with time. They’ve even expanded into women’s clothing and continued producing several products we’ve fallen in love with.

The current Unbound Merino clothing line includes t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, hoodies, button-up shirts, polos, pants, shorts, socks, underwear, and hats. At this point, they produce just above everything for men, outside a suit or stiff dress shirt. The women’s line is limited, but it’s quickly expanding to have everything we expect from the men’s clothing line.

First Impressions

Close Up Of Unbound Merino Shirt

Unbound is currently a direct-to-consumer brand, at least as we know. We’ve never seen it in local retailers and have always ordered directly on their website. So all orders must be placed on their website. The website makes for easy ordering, and order fulfillment and shipping are all reasonably fast. It makes for a seamless shopping experience.

Shipping comes with minimal packaging, which helps reduce waste. It’s all delivered in a branded cardboard box, and items are individually wrapped in paper. They nail the packaging as it feels sustainable and premium.

Versatility

When we travel, we value versatile clothing that fits well in different social settings and physical environments. A truly versatile article of clothing that pair seamlessly with other pieces in my backpack wardrobe and looks great whether we’re out for dinner, on a beach, hiking, or exploring a city. It should also be suitable for any climate, whether Borneo or Iceland.

We find Unbound Merino clothing to be very versatile. With a simple, logo-free design featuring muted colors and a casual fit, their staples are easy to work into my wardrobe. Whether it’s a simple t-shirt, cozy sweater, or flexible travel pants, they can complete almost any look. Plus, with the temperature-regulating properties of merino wool, they’re excellent at handling the weather of any destination or any season at home.

Top Picks From Unbound Merino

Merino Wool T-Shirt

The most popular item and what we wear the most is the Merino Wool T-Shirt. A t-shirt is a classic wardrobe staple that’s easy to work into your daily rotation. That means we’ve ditched our bulk order of generic cotton t-shirts.

Unbound Merino t-shirts utilize ultra-fine 17.5-micron merino wool for the fabric. The result is a very soft t-shirt that offers exceptional functionality. Wool excels at regulating temperatures, drying fast, wicking moisture, and resisting odor. We’ve worn the shirts for hundreds of days now and have never noticed a smell from the shirt.

Their shirts sport a classic fit, so they separate themselves from the athletic cuts of hiking apparel. It provides more room in the shirt, which works for various body types. However, it’s never too loose, and the hemline along the sleeve length is perfect. Wool is heavier than traditional cotton shirts, so the shirts fall nicely across the body and look sharp with chinos.

Additionally, we appreciate the lack of branding on the shirts besides the tagless neck collar. It’s an easy addition to any closet or suitcase. Our two favorite colors from the line are Navy and Heather Grey.

Unbound Merino Travel Pants

Unbound’s Merino Travel Pants may have impressed me more than any other item from the company. Before testing out their tops, I’d worn plenty of wool hiking tops, but the pants are the first and only wool pair I’ve worn. What’s most impressive is the pants are 95% Merino wool with only 5% Elastane to add a bit of comfort and durability.

The pants utilized a heavier weave than the tops to create a more durable fabric. Most important to me is they’re designed with travelers in mind. They’re as comfortable as sweatpants but look sharp when paired with the right outfit. Plus, they have a hidden pocket hidden zipper back pocket for security. We love the look of slim-fit pants, but they aren’t for everyone.

Compact Travel Hoodie

It’s tough to beat the coziness of a classic hoodie. Thanks to the popularity of athleisure, it allows a slim-cut hoodie with minimal branding to work in a multitude of settings. It’s become one of our go-to travel items for long-haul flights.

Crafted from 100% Merino wool, it’s suitable for any cool weather and perfect for cozy evenings at home. The wool design does a better job of regulating temperatures, and it’s far more compact than a traditional hoodie.

We are impressed with the weight and comfort of the hoody. It’s all about simplicity and functionality without any flashy elements. The Compact Travel Hoodie is a travel staple worth adding to your wardrobe.

FAQ About Unbound Merino

What To Know About Merino Wool Clothing

Merino Wool Clothing Close Up

It should be stated that wool clothing is not cheap. However, wool clothing is an investment as it lasts longer than cotton or synthetic materials. We’re big proponents of owning fewer things that are better quality rather than rampant cheap consumerism with products we regularly throw away.

We’d rather have one great shirt that lasts for years over ten that lasts for a year. It also helps that wool clothing is more comfortable and performs far better than cotton. More on that below! It’s also worth noting that wool clothing requires more care than synthetic shirts but requires less washing.

How To Care For Merino Wool Clothing

It’s pretty easy to care for your Unbound Merino wool clothing. Each item is unique and comes with care instructions on the label. However, we prefer to care for all our wool clothing the same.

We suggest you machine wash inside-out in cool water with similar colors and lie flat to dry. Truthfully our t-shirts have slipped into the dryer several times and still look great. It’s still best to let them air dry.

Is Wool Clothing Sustainable?

Faroe Islands sheep

Whether wool is a sustainable material depends on one’s perspective on the sustainability of animal products. It’s essential to recognize that wool is not vegan, but the intersection of veganism and sustainability is much more intricate and nuanced than a simple binary relationship. I’m in the middle of most stances and prefer a balanced approach.

Sustainable and ethical wool production encompasses various crucial aspects, extending beyond the choice of fabrics alone, which is an integral part of sustainable fashion. I appreciate that Unbound Merino acknowledges the topic and ensures that all the factories producing their clothing hold certification from NATIVA and Woolmark. They’re independent certifications that evaluate whether wool adheres to RWS, or responsible wool standards, which protects the welfare of the sheep and their land.

Sustainably, the considerations go beyond material choices and delve into ethical practices and responsible production methods. Unbound Merino’s proactive approach to overseeing its manufacturing process indicates a willingness to address sustainability concerns and take steps toward improving its techniques. Understanding the complexity of sustainability and ethics in wool production is vital when evaluating the broader impact of fashion choices.

Final Thoughts On Unbound Merino Clothes

Cameron Unbound Merino Wool Baalbek

After rigorously testing Unbound Merino clothing over a year of travel, we can confidently say that they fulfill their initial promise splendidly – the clothes remain odor-free even after multiple wears, reducing the need for frequent washing. They’re a blessing on the road.

Our Merino t-shirts and pants stayed fresh for several days longer than garments made from other materials. It meant I’d keep reaching for my Unbound Merino t-shirt after all my other clothes were dirty. I’ve worn my Unbound Merino t-shirt more than any other clothing item this past year.

Durability is impressive with the shirts. We did notice some pilling with the first few washes, but after regular wearing, that went away with time. So far, we have not seen any adverse signs of wear or concerns with the craftsmanship. After extensive testing, we firmly believe that Unbound Merino is an excellent option for Merino wool travel clothing.

Wool clothing stands out for its premium quality, wrinkle resistance, odor resistance, and timeless style. Though you can find similar factors in other brands or even within your closet, Unbound Merino is our choice for wool wardrobe staples. Thanks to their products, you can pack lighter and reduce consumption with a few thoughtful pieces of clothing.
