Where is Mackinac Island?

Things to do in Mackinac Island
The Best To Do On Mackinac Island

I know you are wondering what to do on Mackinac Island, but before we dig into that, let’s set up a location. Mackinac Island is a small island between the Upper and Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The Ojibwe tribe first inhabited it before the Europeans settled here in the 1600s. The name of the island in Odawa is Michilimackinac, and “Mitchimakinak” in Ojibwemowin means “Great Turtle.” Why a turtle? It was thought that the island, with its impressive limestone bluffs, looked like a giant turtle rising out of the water.

It’s a popular place to visit in the summer; situated in Lake Huron and the Straits of Mackinac, there are plenty of beachy activities to enjoy. Mackinac Island is well connected to Mackinaw City and St Ignace via ferry.

Mackinac is a special place to visit in the United States as it is home to the historic Fort Mackinac. This is where the Colonial era fort was built and has deep roots connected to the Great Lakes fur trade in the 18th and 18th centuries. You can still see many remnants of the island’s past to this day.

Motorized vehicles are not allowed on Mackinac Island. This dates back to the late 1800s when horses were very disturbed by the noise of car engines. Now, you can get around the island with a bike or horse carriage.

Mackinac Island is a varied destination perfect for many Michigan travelers. Around the Grand Hotel and through the Victorian neighborhoods, you’ll notice it is very posh, while the historic district offers fantastic shopping and fudge tours. Some wish to take on the hiking and biking trails on the island for a more active vacation.

Is Mackinac Island the Same as Mackinaw City?

Mackinac Bridge

There are a lot of “Mack” in some things in the area. There is Mackinac Island, the Mackinac Bridge, the Straits of Mackinac, Mackinac County, Mackinaw City and the USCGC Mackinaw vessel, so it is easy to get confused. Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island are two different locations, with Mackinaw City connected to the Lower Peninsula.

Mackinac Island has its origins in the Anishinaabek language/Ojibwa, where the name Michilimackinac means “place of the great turtle.” The French constructed Fort Michilimackinac in 1715 on the mainland in Mackinaw City and altered the Indigenous name to suit their language.

As time went on, the name Michilimackinac was abbreviated to Mackinac. In 1761, the British took control of Fort Michilimackinac and, two decades later, relocated the fort by traveling over the ice from the mainland to its current position on the island, known today as Mackinac Island.

When the British established present-day Mackinaw City in the 1850s, they revised the spelling of the city name to reflect the local pronunciation, which includes a “w” sound at the end.

If you are vacationing to Mackinac Island and want to enjoy all the best things to do on Mackinac Island, we recommend actually staying on the island. However, rates are lower in Mackinac City and Saint Ignace.

Today, it shows what life was like in times gone by, having been restored to reflect the early 1800s. The period kitchen, complete with a working fireplace, is at the heart of the home.

20. Chill Out in Marquette Park

Marquette Park on a sunny day

A yesteryear playground and vegetable garden for British soldiers based at the nearby Fort Mackinac, Marquette Park is a verdant outdoor space perfect for enjoying the sunshine. The park is named after Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary who established the first European settlement in Michigan.

You can enjoy the many types of trees and flowers – depending on the season. The park shimmers in hues of pale purple thanks to the lilac bushes. Visit the tranquil Peace Garden – created to celebrate good relations and 200 years of peace between the USA and Canada – and see the impressive bronze statue entitled “Be Still”.

Other park features include a small dome-shaped replica chapel, statues and monuments, picnic areas, and large expanses of grass. It offers amazing views over the lake too.

21. Have a Beer at Great Turtle Brewery & Distillery

Great Turtle Brewery & Distillery

After enjoying all these best things to do on Mackinac Island you’ll likely be ready for a cold one. One of the best Michigan breweries is right on Main Street.

Great Turtle Brewery & Distillery is the premier craft brewery and distillery on Mackinac Island, offering visitors the opportunity to unwind and savor a delicious meal and refreshing drink with loved ones. As the island’s first and only establishment of its kind, it’s fitting that they bear the name of “Mackinac,” which translates to “Great Turtle.”

Is Mackinac Island Open in the Winter?

Mackinac Island is indeed open year round, though the primary season for travel is between May and October. This is when you can truly enjoy all the best things to do on Mackinac Island and when most businesses will be open.

Most Americans and foreigners don’t think of Michigan when planning a vacation. Images of abandoned houses and factories in Detroit, water crises, and country farms come to mind. However, the mitten state has much more to offer than that.

I was born in Michigan, so the state holds a special place in my heart. I think about Michigan’s beautiful winters, clear beaches, beautiful waterfalls in the Upper Peninsula, and cute historic small towns scattered throughout the state. There are plenty of perfect places to spend romantic weekend getaways in Michigan with your loved one.

Where exactly should you enjoy a Michigan getaway? Here are all the best romantic getaways in Michigan you should explore.

MICHIGAN AT A GLANCE
  • When is the best time to visit: Summertime in Michigan cannot be beaten. Plan your trip between June and September, especially if visiting a Michigan beach destination. Although fall in Michigan during October is like something out a movie scene.
  • What are some of the top things to do in Michigan: Christmas in Frankenmuth, enjoy the beach in Grand Haven, wander the boutiques in Saugatuck.
  • How to get around: Like most states, you’ll need to have your own car for any intercity travel in Michigan. Having an RV or campervan is also a very popular way to explore in the summer. Outdoorsy is a fantastic website to search for van rentals.
  • Beaches to visit: Mackinaw City Beach Access and Cheboygan State Park.
  • Movies set in Michigan: It Follows (horror), 8 Mile, Detroit, and Gran Torino.
  • Books set in Michigan: Song of Solomon, My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island, and Middlesex.

Fun & Romantic Getaways in Michigan Ideas

Feel like you’re in Bavaria in Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth Michigan
Couples Getaway Michigan

A great couples getaway in Michigan is Frankenmuth. If I could describe Frankenmuth in two words, it would be “Little Bavaria.”

Frankenmuth is a great getaway destination in Michigan year-round, but in my opinion, it’s a great winter weekend getaway in Michigan. The whole town turns into a giant German-like Christmas market through the winter months.

People are happy, kids are ice skating, the shops are full, and the streets are lined with Christmas lights. Throughout the town, you can feel the holiday spirit in the air. The downtown area is modeled after a 19th-century German village, and in mid-September, the whole community gathers for Oktoberfest, much like they do in Munich.

One of my favorite things to do in Michigan is head to Bronner’s, the largest Christmas store in the world,  around Christmas time.

  • Things to do in Frankenmuth:
    • Obviously walk inside Bronner’s during Christmas!
    • Stay at a Bavarian Inn
    • Shop at the Frankenmuth River Place Shops
One of the most romantic places to stay in Frankenmuth is the Marv Herzog Hotel, a boutique hotel with a riverside patio and age-old European decor.

eat all the Michigan cherries in Traverse City

Romantic Things to do in Michigan

One of the best Michigan getaways is, hands down, Traverse City. If you want to shop until you drop, Traverse City, right in the Grand Traverse Bay Area of Northern Michigan, is your place.

The streets of Traverse City are lined with unique shops and delicious places to eat. What the town is most known for are the Michigan cherries. This city is easily one of the most romantic getaways you can have in Michigan.

Traverse City Sunset

Dubbed the “Cherry Capital of the World,” almost 3/4 of America’s cherries are grown in Michigan. I’m not talking about the sweet maraschino cherries, either. I’m referring to the delicious, juicy ruby-red cherries you can only find in certain parts of the world.

Two of my favorite things to do in Traverse City are celebrating the National Cherry Festival each June and attending the Traverse City Film Festival every summer. Michigan’s best wineries are situated around Traverse City too – a few of our favorites are Left Foot Charley, Peninsula Cellars, and Mari Vineyards.

For a romantic weekend getaway make sure to book the Cherry Tree Inn and Suites as they have an awesome waterfront location on the East Bay.

Cross the Bridge to Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island Hotel
Mackinac Island / Romantic Getaways Michigan

Another great romantic getaway in Michigan is Mackinac Island! Mackinac Island is the perfect anniversary getaway in Michigan. In case you didn’t know, two peninsulas make up Michigan.

The Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula are connected by the Mackinac Bridge and separated by Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Mackinac Island is between these two peninsulas, renowned for its colonial and Victorian-era ambiance. The island is one of the most popular destinations in Michigan, and for a good reason.

Sailing Around Mackinac Island

After coming here and seeing the horse and buggies, fudge shops, and cobbled streets, you yourself will be enchanted. There is plenty of history to learn here and great shopping (especially for fudge), and there are also the posh and luxurious resort areas where couples can treat themselves to fabulous dinners at the Carriage House.

Horse riding, hiking, and paddling also present themselves to the more active bunch. The best part is an automobile ban on the island, so get used to clean air, horses, and plenty of bicycles to enjoy a romantic weekend.

  • Things to do in Mackinac Island:
    • Make some Mackinac Island fudge
    • Take a horse-drawn carriage ride around the island
    • Learn history at the Benjamin Blacksmith Shop
The Bear Cove Inn is the cutest little hotel in Saint Ignace. If you're looking for one of the most beautiful Michigan getaways in the Upper Peninsula you cannot miss this charming place.

Search for Petoskey Stones in Petoskey

Campfires in Petoskey

Petoskey is located on Little Traverse Bay and is one of the most affluent areas of the state I have traveled through. It’s a great Michigan getaway as it has shop-lined streets, yacht-filled harbors, and outstanding eateries await you.

Petoskey is named after the Petoskey Stone, the prehistoric fossil found in the area. You can easily have one of those awesome weekend getaways in Michigan here.

Petoskey

Besides finding the Petoskey Stone, visitors to the area can find themselves on one of the many bike and hiking trails through the Petoskey State Park or golf on one of the beautiful golf courses near Bay Harbor along the water.

If you are looking for a more fishing-oriented romantic getaway in Michigan, check out Petoskey’s Bear River, which hosts brook trout, salmon, and steelhead.

Enjoy a romantic weekend in Petoskey at the Stafford's Bay View Inn which features Victorian Era rooms with modern and helpful amenities.

Enjoy the arts scene in Saugatuck

romantic things to do in michigan

For one of the more inexpensive romantic getaways in Michigan, why not head to the beach? As a little girl, I would always find myself in West Michigan, visiting Saugatuck during the summer. Only a 45-minute drive away from Grand Rapids, Saugatuck offers visitors a more laid-back art scene on the shores of Lake Michigan.

It’s a great Michigan family getaway town perfect for walking around and enjoying the unique shops, romantic restaurants, and art galleries that are so hard to come by in the Midwest. You’ll have a hard time getting bored as there are so many things to do in Saugatuck.

It also has one of the most open LGBT communities in the state and is considered fairly progressive. Oval Beach is a beautiful and serene beach that is easily the most popular in summertime with its white sand and clear water.

  • Things to do in Saugatuck:
    • Roam into one of the many art galleries
    • Enjoy a day at Oval Beach
    • Hop on a Saugatuck Dune Ride

climb the dunes at Sleeping Bear Dunes

sleeping bear dunes

ABC’s Good Morning America voted Sleeping Bears Dunes in Northern Michigan the “Most Beautiful Place in America.” It’s not an exaggeration. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Park covers over 35 miles of pristine coastline.

Sleeping Bear is perfect for a cheap weekend getaway in Michigan, especially for couples to enjoy a few days of pure bliss and relaxation among some of the bluest waters in Michigan.

Sleeping Bears Dunes are beautiful in both the summer and the winter, but for swimming and camping around Lake Michigan, the months of June, July, and August are perfect. The Dunes are named after the great Ojibwe legend, which you can read fully about here.

  • Things to do at Sleeping Bear Dunes:
    • Walk the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail
    • Paddle around the clear blue waters
    • Climb up the many dunes
Empire Lakeshore Inn is one of the only hotels near Sleeping Bear Dunes, and if you don't want to camp it may be a great option for you!

enjoy the beach in Frankfort

Frankfort Lighthouse

Another great couples getaway in Michigan is Frankfort. If you’re looking for a romantic getaway in Michigan that is only three hours from the capital city, look no further than Frankfort.

This cute little town is in Benzie County and is situated right along Lake Michigan. White sand dunes, crystal clear water, and awe-inspiring sunsets surround the quaint Victorian homes and cute coffee shops in this small little town.

romantic getaways in michigan

One of my favorite things to do here is to head up to Betsie Point Lighthouse at the southern entrance to the Manitou Passage. Frankfort is so romantic, one of my best friends even married here!

  • Things to do in Frankfort:
    • Enjoy Crystal Lake
    • Have a baked good at Crescent Bakery
    • Sip a beer at Stormcloud Brewing Company
For a lakefront romantic place head to Chimney Corners Resort in Frankfort. It's charming and has all the amenities you could need.

Leland

Leland, Michigan
Leland is one of the most romantic getaways in Michigan

Leland is a teenie village in Leelanau Country and is an excellent place for a day trip or a weekend trip in Michigan for couples in the north!

The quaint town is easy enough to walk around and enjoy a fun day of kayaking, swimming, or just watching the beautiful yachts pull into port. There are plenty of cute places to eat and shop in Leland.

Fishtown is a small 150-year-old fishing village that is also a great place to visit and have lunch. The fully operational Fishtown is one of Michigan’s only fishing villages left. While walking through here, you can easily see, feel, and smell the fish smokehouses, drying fish racks, and fishing shanties while trying some of the one-of-a-kind smoked fish. I love Leland and find it one of Michigan’s best places to visit!

  • Things to do in Leland:
    • Explore the charming “Fishtown”
    • Have a meal at The Cove
    • Pick up a souvenir at Harbor House Trading Company
An enjoyable place to stay in Leland is the Whaleback Inn with lake views.

photograph Michigan lighthouses in Ludington

most romantic weekend getaways in michigan

Ludington is one of the best romantic getaways in Michigan year-round. There are great hiking trails in Ludington State Park to go cross-country skiing on a romantic winter getaway in Michigan and of course, there are dunes to climb in the summer at the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Forest.

Like many towns on this list, Ludington has fabulous beaches along Lake Michigan accompanied by two famous Michigan lighthouses. However, it’s not the beaches or the antique shops downtown that make Ludington so wonderful – it’s the massive list of festivals they host! From the Ludington Freedom Festival to their Winterfest, it’s hard to get bored in Ludington any time of the year.

For an adults-only magical weekend away try the Summers Inn. This is a charming inn is just 5 minutes drive from the shores of Lake Michigan.

Frolick around the tulips in Holland

Veldheer Tulip Gardens holland
things to do in Michigan for couples

If Frankenmuth is the nation’s “Little Bavaria,” then Holland, Michigan is the nation’s “Little Amsterdam.” Yup, in case you have never been to Western and Central Europe, don’t worry because Michigan has you covered!

Dutch Americans founded Holland, hence the name. Holland is located on Lake Macatawa, and there are many public beach accesses if you are looking for a romantic getaway in Michigan.

The best things to do in Michigan for couples lie in Holland. There is also a fabulous shopping district, mostly on the iconic 8th street. Here, you can find locally owned businesses, coffee shops, Irish Pubs, and even the New Holland Brewing Company (one of the best Michigan breweries). Despite all these amazing things, the Tulip Time Festival is what Holland, Michigan is famous for. Each May, Holland plays host to over six million tulips around the city.

  • Things to do in Holland:
    • Visit the Holland Harbor Lighthouse
    • Explore Windmill Island Gardens
    • Enjoy the Summer at Holland State Park
There are a ton of places to stay in Holland, so visitors are spoilt with options. One of the most well-reviewed hotels is the Hampton Inn Holland.

Chase Waterfalls in Marquette

romantic getaways in michigan - marquette

For cheap weekend getaways in Michigan for couples, why not stick to just enjoying the simpler things – nature? Marquette is set on the scenic shores of Lake Superior and has some of the best beaches in the US.

It’s the largest city in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and a fantastic place to head if you love nature and being outdoors. Does tucking yourself away in a cozy cabin during Fall in Michigan sound nice, like a nice couple’s retreat in Michigan? Marquette may be for you!

Marquette was originally developed as a hotspot for the iron ore industry, it has since blossomed into a cultural mecca of art and history. It also has many natural wonders. There are so many waterfalls to explore, and even mountains (yes Michigan has some mountains!). If you visit in the winter, you may be treated to a Northern Lights spectacle!

For the ultimate couples retreat Michigan, consider staying at Little Presque Isle Cabins! These are rustic cabins in the woods that will transport you to another time!

Walk Under a Lighthouse in Grand Haven

grand haven in michigan

Grand Haven is well known in Michigan for its stunning beach landscapes. It’s rich in Americana history, and every year plays host to the Coast Guard Festival.

Grand Haven is for you if you are looking for a beachy romantic weekend away. There are charming boutique shops, fantastic restaurants, and plenty of places to set down a beach chair and soak up some rays.

The red Grand Haven Lighthouse is one of the most iconic Michigan images. During both the summer and winter, you can stroll under it and enjoy the overall views of beautiful Lake Michigan.

  • Things to do in Grand Haven:
    • Walk Around Downtown Grand Haven
    • Visit the Tri-Cities Historical Museum

The most romantic beach luxury escape in Michigan is the Looking Glass Beachfront Inn, and I would not hesitate to book a stay there for some R&R.

enjoy Michigan Wine in South Haven

best things to do in south haven michigan

South Haven is a delightful hamlet known for its spectacular scenery, great beaches, and iconic South Haven Lighthouse. South Haven is commonly referred to as ‘the Catskills of the Midwest’ for its abundance of natural wonders, it’s set along the shores of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the beautiful Black River.

One of the main draws of South Haven is the enticing myriad of vineyards to visit, with the most well-known being Cogdal Vineyards. Cogdal carefully crafts small-batch Michigan wines served by flights, glass, or bottle. Each can be paired with a selection of artisan cheeses or chocolates, as well, within the serene oasis of their tasting room. It’s the perfect Michigan romantic getaway.

The varietals range from classic and refined to bold and eclectic. Warner Vineyards is another great place located conveniently downtown along the Black River and offers over 25 different wines to taste test by the glass or bottle.

There's really no better place to stay in South Haven than Yelton Manor Bed and Breakfast.

Watch a Lugnuts Game in Lansing

Lansing Lugnuts
Image by Joel Dinda via flickr / fun things to do in Michigan for couples

The capital city of Lansing is home to a very popular minor league baseball team. In the summer one of the best things to do is enjoy a baseball game at the Lansing Lugnuts stadium.

Head over to the Cooley Law School Stadium, and get ready for a show. Half the fun is of course feasting, so luckily there are six full service concession stands. You may end up getting a classic snack in the stands regardless when midway through hotdogs are shot from an air gun into the audience.

After the game head to one of the fantastic Michigan breweries nearby – we particularly love Lansing Brewing Company as it’s the best Lansing brewery!

  • Things to do in Lansing:
    • See the Michigan State Capitol Building
    • Take the kids to Impression 5 Science Center
    • Stroll Old Town Lansing
One of the best places to stay in Lansing is the Graduate East Lansing!

Charlevoix is a small northern Michigan town that is one of the best places to see the Northern lights in the state. Given its lack of light pollution, you have a terrific chance of seeing the aurora from Fisherman’s Island State Park. Speaking from experience, there is nothing more romantic than catching the Northern Lights with your lover.

It’s best to look for clear skies and check the Kp index before seeing the northern lights. The best chance to see the Northern lights is between December and March.

  • Things to do in Charlevoix

    • Ferry to the Emerald Isle

In the winter, a fun thing to do is snowmobile, snowshoe, or go cross-country skiing through the quiet woods. If you are really after something different, check out the Great Lakes Ice Racing every winter!

Chase the Fall Colors Around Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

One of the most romantic things to do in Michigan in the fall is chase the colors. During the month of October and early November the yellow, orange, and red colors are almost too stunning to believe. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a surreal place to visit to see some of the most amazing Michigan landscapes.

Here the rugged coastlines contrast the shimmering waters of Lake Superior, which will surely leave all visitors satisfied with their journey here.

There is an abundance of hiking opportunities, fishing excursions, and mountain biking along the lakeshore which are all still wonderful in the fall.

Near Manistique in the Upper Peninsula, Kitch-iti-kipi is Michigan’s most prominent natural freshwater spring; the name comes from the Ojibwe language and means “cold spring.” But it’s also often referred to as the Mirror of Heaven.

A beautiful boathouse sits in the middle of the spring and is where many visitors can enjoy the natural surroundings. Head here for a lovely walk in nature.

There are over 6,000 ornaments to browse and buy at the famous Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland. Yes, that automatically bumps it to this Christmas Michigan list.

The Capital Building At Christmas in Lansing

The official Christmas tree in Lansing is a time-honored tradition that has been going on at the State Capitol for decades. First, they search Michigan high and low for the perfect specimen of a tree, taking nominations from local helpers all around. It’s always tall, never failing to impress and delight, with a towering height requirement of at least 60 feet. It can be a spruce or a fir, and once transported to the capitol, it is ceremoniously lit for all the town to see. It’s a lovely way to commence the festive season we all know and love.

The best time to see this tree is during the annual Silver Bells in the City, which is the official lighting of this massive tree and one of the best things to do for Christmas in Michigan. It’s always the Friday before Thanksgiving in downtown Lansing around 7:30 pm. There’s an incredible display of fireworks and an Electric Light parade, too! Afterward, make sure to check out one of these fantastic Lansing restaurants!

The burgers are the main draw here, Jerry Grove is world famous, and easily the most popular pick served with grilled onions, bacon, and swiss cheese on texas toast. It’s a simple menu full of no-frills fare, which always cures those cravings for good old-fashioned home cooking.

This spot has quite a history in South Haven, as the original Maple Grove tavern was built way back in 1933, and it’s been passed down and taken over by a few different local families ever since.

South Haven Brewpub

  • Price: $$
  • Cuisine: Brewpub
  • Address: 515 Williams St, South Haven (GPS)
  • Website: Link

This is South Haven’s first ever brewery, responsible for bringing the craft beer craze to these ends of Michigan. They’re located right along the beautiful Black River in the historic Old Harbor Village, so the atmosphere is both scenic and comfortable.

More than just their impressive small batch beers, they offer a full menu that’s well worth a stop, even if ales and lagers on tap aren’t your things.

They have plenty of pizzas to choose from, wraps, tacos, and burgers. We love to get a few small plates here and share a snack, like the Fried Cheese Curds or Beer Cheese and Pretzels.

China Cafe

  • Price: $
  • Cuisine: Chinese
  • Address: 319 Broadway St, South Haven (GPS)
  • Website: Link

For excellent Chinese food in South Haven, this is the local go-to. The service is great, and it’s fun to go in the early afternoon for the specials, which are excellent value and include fried rice, crab rangoon, and a fortune cookie in every meal. You can also order some takeout for a cozy evening at home.

All the food is fresh and flavorful, and there’s a wide array of vegetarian options to choose from as well. The decor is decidedly old school which adds to the family-run, hole-in-the-wall feel of the joint. We know everyone has their usual order for a spot like this, but the Sesame Chicken is especially nice here.

Potatoes Plus 2

  • Price: $
  • Cuisine: Cafe
  • Address: 1210 Phoenix St Suite 7, South Haven (GPS)
  • Website: Link

This little soul food cafe is the hidden gem of South Haven and a classic case of don’t let the unassuming facade fool you. Every dish is finger-licking good and made from scratch in a traditional home-cooked style.

While the menu is simple, you can’t go wrong with any order. They have locally caught fish, a few kinds of chicken, and a different special each day.

The sides are either collard greens or cornbread. Their signature is, of course, the potatoes, all served with butter, chives, and sour cream. They come in six different ways, including Surf, Turf, and Veggie, though you can also build your own custom spud creation.

Sleder’s Family Tavern

This eatery has been an institution in the area since it first opened in 1882! It’s the oldest continually operated restaurant in the state (which already makes it one of the best Traverse City restaurants in my book).

It feels like home as soon as you walk in the door. It’s furnished with large wooden booths, a mahogany bar, and some mounted animals adorning the walls. Kissing the moose for luck has become a beloved tradition over the years.

Over a century of history sits in the pleasantly preserved facade, consistently feeding the hungry masses of Traverse City elevated Midwest comfort foods.

Folgarelli’s Market

Folgarelli’s Market

In every new destination it’s important to know where the best sandwiches are, for an easy lunch, a grab and go option, or even a romantic picnic scenario. This is Falgarelli’s Market for us, which 100% deserves to be on this Traverse City best restaurants list. It’s modeled off of the authentic old world Italian style.

They have a little bit of everything, from prepared pastas to gourmet meats and cheeses to desserts made fresh daily. Make your own charcuterie board and pair it with the perfect bottle of wine from their vast selection. Of course, ordering from the extensive sandwich menu is always a great call, especially if it’s the Mobster.

Don’s Drive-In

You may not think a diner as one of the best Traverse City restaurants, but don’t let looks deceive you. Don’s Drive-In is a classic carhop serving up the delicious diner plates we all know and love. Dating back to 1958, this iconic American fixture still maintains all the retro charm of its original opening.

Any meal ordered comes with a heaping side of nostalgia, complete with vinyl red booths, jukeboxes, and neon signs. The real hand dipped milkshakes are masterful. The Coney Dog is a real regional treat, and the Patty Melt is perfection on a plate.

The Little Fleet

The Little Fleet

The Little Fleet is less of a restaurant and more of a collection of food trucks set right downtown in the summer months. It’s a famous fixture, with a hip and happening flair. The outside seating is first come first serve and there’s an impressive indoor bar on-site as well.

The roster includes Happy’s Taco Shop, Cordwood BBQ, Good on Wheels, Traverse City Pizza Company, Glendale Ave., and the Big Squeeze. It’s a great way to get a real taste of the foodie scene and spirit of Traverse City.

Jolly Pumpkin

Jolly Pumpkin

The Jolly Pumpkin may be a Traverse City brewery first, but the elevated pub grub is reason enough to go on its own. The fact that you can wash down these delicious dishes with craft drafts is certainly a bonus. It’s a bit off the beaten path, surrounded by verdant forest.

Exposed beams and a fireplace give the place a cozy tavern feel. The Mac and Cheese as a main is mouthwatering, and the ribs are just as delectable. There are sandwiches, artisan pizzas, and enough scrumptious snacks to make up a meal like truffle fries and nachos.

15 BEST Petoskey Restaurants You Should Try! (Michigan) https://theworldpursuit.com/best-petoskey-restaurants/ Thu, 07 Sep 2023 12:43:00 +0000 https://theworldpursuit.com/?p=64950 A small coastal community known mainly for its scenic beauty, Petoskey sits along the scenic shores of Michigan. Often deemed a waterfront resort city, this city is about as picturesque as it gets for this Northern region. There are plenty of things to do in Petoskey, including eating at some of the great Petoskey restaurants.

The charming downtown abuts the stunning spectacle of the turquoise Little Traverse Bay. Opportunities for a weekend Michigan getaway abound here regardless of season, from paddling to hiking to skiing.

It’s a great way to work up an appetite and then dive into the culinary coups of Petoskey, of which there are many. There’s a wide range of eclectic eats to enjoy here, including everything from fine dining fares to classic comfort foods. Everyone will surely find a sweet or savory treat to tantalize their taste buds. Here are all the very best Petoskey restaurants for foodie fanatics.

Best Petoskey Restaurants to Try!

The Side Door Saloon

The Side Door Saloon
  • Price: $$
  • Cuisine: Sports Bar
  • Address: 1200 US-31

The Side Door Saloon is the quintessential Michigan pub in Petoskey. It’s a local watering hole where you’ll find groups of friends swapping stories over cold pints and the game playing on the big screen TV.

It’s full of classic kitschy pub decor, like hanging canoes, taxidermized animals, and festive flags. The patio seating outside is also lovely and laid back. The menu is extensive, with various elevated American bar food favorites. The Fresh Lake Superior Whitefish comes highly recommended, and all the burgers are tasty as well.

As you may expect, there’s a full bar offering classic cocktails, many inventive takes on the Moscow mule, and a range of beers on tap and in bottles. Pop in during the “attitude adjustment hours” for a real steal on bites and beverages.

Mim’s Mediterranean Grill

One of my favorite cheap Petoskey restaurants

This brightly colored cafe is a gem for mouthwatering Mediterranean fares in Petoskey. The cuisine is all authentic and made with fresh and local ingredients. It’s a cute little bungalow with indoor and outdoor seating and an all-around favorite for many locals. The walls are adorned with offbeat art, and the patio has a firepit for those chillier Michigan days.

Nothing can beat the portions and the price here, and it can honestly be rare to find such flavorful foods from this part of the world in the area. There are different kinds of gyros, kebobs, seafood dishes, and salads.

However, the Curry Chicken Shawarma Plate is our preferred pick. It’s also one of those spots where you almost want to just make an entire meal out of the sides, like tabbouleh, grape leaves, falafel, hummus, and pita.

Chandler’s (One of our favorite petoskey restaurants!)

Set in the heart of downtown Petoskey, Chandler’s is a highly cherished eatery of this coastal community and one of my favorite Petoskey restaurants. The ambiance feels chic and decidedly European. There are three different areas to enjoy a drink or dish here, the main dining room, the bar, and the patio. The Chandler’s Farm Board is always a fun order, both to photograph and devour.

Chandler’s serves progressive American cuisine, using seasonal and local ingredients to make elevated plates. One of the main draws here is the very impressive wine cellar. It houses over 4,000 bottles from all over the world.

As such, it’s a great place to try a glass or buy a bottle, and they even sell crates and deliver private orders, famously fulfilling any and all wine needs in the city.

Roast and Toast

  • Price: $$
  • Cuisine: Cafe
  • Address: 309 E Lake St

Roast and Toast is a cute and comfy cafe frequented for the best breakfast in town. It’s a cozy yet funky ambiance, with neon signs, model ships, and warmly colored walls that will instantly make you feel right at home. It’s a counter service spot, and easy to see why locals often flock here.

More than just a quality cuisine, they’ve been roasting and brewing their coffee here since 1993, hence the name. Cup of joe connoisseurs will be jonesing for some java the second they arrive.

Everything is handmade in-house here, from the salad dressings to the freshly baked pastries, using all local growers and purveyors. The Build Your Own Deli Sandwich and the Bayfront Breakfast Pita are delicious dishes.

Jose’s

Jose’s is an unassuming local spot that just happens to have the most delicious Mexican food around. Everything is made in traditional style, and the menu features all the favorite fares, from quesadillas to tacos to burritos. It has an intimate neighborhood vibe and is a great go-to for authentic, affordable eats in the city.

It’s a comfortable space with counter service, and each meal comes out hot, hardy, and made to order. The guacamole is even prepared right in front of you. The Mexican Pizza, Chilli Relleno, and Homemade Tamales are a few of the more unexpected yet remarkable options on this small and traditional menu.

City Park Grill

City Park Grill is set inside a Victorian-era home, one of the city’s oldest buildings. Built-in 1875, it was originally a men-only billiards club. It’s historically known for being a place once patronized by the iconic author Hemingway himself, so of course, this had to make our list of best restaurants in Petoskey.

City Park Grille is also said to be haunted, so keep your eyes out for any odd happenings or ghost sightings while inside. Today its claim to fame is delectable, global-inspired pub grub, and we cannot get enough.

The Jambalaya, Sweet Chili Glazed Salmon, and the Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich are among the top tasty orders. They often host live music events, so it’s a great chance to see some local talent and get your groove on in Petoskey. There’s also a full bar in this old-school joint, so feel free to let loose with some libations.

Sage

Sage is set inside the Odawa Casino, but don’t let that fool you, as eating here is far from a gamble. They boast a very upscale atmosphere and fancy fares for the full fine dining experience. When we go, we love to indulge in a meal that feels super high-end, like lobster or steak, as the prices tend to be pretty reasonable here.

It feels far removed from the bustle and noise of the casino, and it’s all thankfully smoke-free as well. The Tuna Poke and Sage Signature Mushroom Gnocchi have both garnered rave reviews. Believe it or not, this spot is one of the best Petoskey restaurants, especially for an elegant experience. Sage is superb for a celebratory night out on the town.

Beacon Bistro

  • Price: $$$
  • Cuisine: Fine Dining
  • Address: 319 Bay St

Beacon Bistro is a beloved institution in the area that boasts some of the best dining room views. We especially love to go for the stunning sunset vistas. The outdoor deck seating and window-filled interior look out over the sparkling Michigan waters, perfect for enjoying Michigan in the fall. What could be a more beautiful backdrop for a bite and a beverage?

The menu is small, but each dish is thoughtfully prepared and plated beautifully. The Cacio e Pepe, made with squid ink pasta, is super delicious, and every mouthful of the Veal Osso Bucco is worth savoring. Treat yourself to a starter, like the aptly named the Butter of the Gods, smoked bone marrow, gremolata, and crostini.

Pour Kitchen and Bar

This public house is a perfect pick for a lovely meal out in Petoskey. It’s a super trendy and modern atmosphere, with exposed brick, funky lighting fixtures, and dark leather banquettes.

As the name implies, there are a variety of taps to enjoy here, made up of mostly local craft beers. The signature cocktails are creative and specially crafted. The Duck Fat Sazerac is a must-try.

The dishes here are Asian-inspired and made with fresh local ingredients based solely on seasonal availability. There are a few sushi rolls available, both classic and inventive, as well as fried rice and fusion fares like the Ahi Poke Nachos. Each entree has a suggested wine paired with it right on the menu, a thoughtful and much-appreciated touch.

Thai Orchard

For Thai food in Petoskey, Thai Orchard is the obvious choice. They use authentic ingredients to create all the classic cuisines, from noodles to curries. It’s all intentionally healthy foods that taste fresh and delicious. The exterior is unassuming, and the inside offers a low-key atmosphere that lets the fantastic fares speak for themselves.

You can choose every plate’s spice level and protein, so the whole menu feels customizable and extra enjoyable. As such, vegetarians will find plenty of options to pick from here.

It’s usually pretty busy with takeout orders, but the flavors, prices, and portions are well worth any wait. It’s such a popular place in Petoskey, and it’s easy to see why with the first bite.

Palette Bistro

  • Price:  $$
  • Cuisine: Mediterranean Petoskey restaurant
  • Address: 321 Bay St

This two-story cafe on Little Traverse Bay serves up gourmet Mediterranean eats. The atmosphere is casual yet refined, with an array of lovely local art adorning the walls. The outdoor heated igloos are such a cool experience and a special way to enjoy the area’s scenery every season.

The Forest Floor Soup is a magical starter for lunch or dinner, the Baked Feta is a phenomenal small plate, and the Seafood Paella as the main dish blew us away. It’s a quaint country-style spot where everything is Instagrammable. There are signature cocktails, craft beer drafts, and super fun flights of wine.

The Back Lot Beer Garden

It’s not exactly one of the best Michigan breweries, but this beer garden offers a lot to visitors and locals alike! This hidden gem is probably one of the coolest places to eat in downtown Petoskey.

It’s a beautiful industrial-style beer garden with string lights and picnic tables. It’s open all year round and is a hip hotspot for those in the know.

Brightly colored vendors arrive on four wheels, ready to feed the hungry masses of the city. There’s a bar on-site selling a wide selection of craft beers, curated wines, and anywhere from five to ten local eateries. Happy’s Taco Truck, Phoxy’s Phillies and Grindage, and Full Moon Pizza are a few of the usual favorite suspects.

Julienne Tomatoes

Everyone loves this little downtown gem. Julienne Tomatoes has way more to offer than some finely diced fruits. It’s a quaint eatery full of exposed brick, adorable art, and old-school charm. A lot of the furnishings are vintage.

They are known mainly for their out-of-this-world sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. You can even try two different sandwiches by ordering half of each. The Gotta Try This, and the Lamp Lighter are both amazing. Everything is freshly baked and homemade. They also strongly focus on community support, donating, and partnering with many local nonprofits.

1911 Restaurant

Price: $$$
Cuisine: New American
Address: 1549 Glendale Ave

The 1911 Restaurant is set inside of the historic and quaint Terrace Inn and is one of the best Petoskey restaurants to dine at. It’s a casual fine dining experience with a wonderful menu that’s created seasonally. The interior feels super elegant, complete with white tablecloths and chandeliers, and the tiny outdoor terrace has beautiful verdant views overlooking the park.

A three-course prix fixe menu offers a salad, an entree, and a dessert for under $50. Menu items can also be ordered a la carte if you wish.

The Wagyu Sirloin, Vodka Pasta, and Planked Whitefish are all delectable dishes, so it can be tough to choose just one. There’s often lovely live music, which also rounds out the romantic ambiance.

Villa Ristorante Italiano

best petoskey restaurants
  • Price: $$
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Address: US-131 S

This upscale bistro boasts an old-world vibe that’s something special. Dark wooden beams, warm lighting, and stained-glass windows set the stage for a charmingly classic atmosphere. The wine list is a thing of beauty. There’s even an entire grappa bar, and it doesn’t get more Italian than that.

Many say Villa is the pinnacle of authentic Italian in Michigan, and we must agree. Every ingredient is carefully selected, and each plate is thoughtfully made directly from traditional family recipes.

Ordering the Antipasto de Casa saves you from appetizer FOMO, offering a little bit of everything in all its flavorful glory. There’s a long list of handmade pasta, from Baked Penne Rigate to Ravioli, and fish, chicken, and meat meals.

You can often find these beers at bars around Michigan, and with a replica of an artillery shell for a tap handle, you won’t miss it. Yet nothing beats kicking back in an old fort and trying their Juice, Pineapple Grindage, or Crop Duster Citra IPAs.
